Headmaster Brockert

So far the year was off to a decent start. No student altercations, no complaining parents and they even had a solution to their Quidditch "problem". (As far as Mortimer was concerned, there was no problem, as he didn't consider Quidditch all that important but others disagreed including his own son Eustace, but Eustace's opinion didn't matter one whit as far as Sonora went. He didn't even have a child here. Unfortunately, people whose opinion mattered more also cared but as long as he didn't have to do anything with it and nobody was forced into playing, it was okay with him.)

In other news, he had not one but two granddaughters attending Sonora this year and thus as the first years were brought in, he surveyed them with a bit more curiosity. They had better treat his granddaughters with the respect and decency that befitted them. Actually, Mortimer wasn't all that worried about Topaz, she could take care of herself but Allegra was an awfully jumpy child.

Once everyone seemed to be in attendance, Mortimer placed a Sonorus charm on himself and began to speak. "Welcome to Sonora for the new first years and welcome back for all older students. First years, you should have recieved a blank badge at the end of Orientation." At least they hadn't gotten it when they first got there, some were liable to lose it. "You will dunk the badge in the Sorting Potion and it will turn the color representing your house which are blue for Aladren, yellow for Teppenpaw, red for Crotalus, and brown for Pecari. Afterwards, you may join your house table." He noted where Topaz and Allegra were sorted with pleasure.

After the first years had been settled, Mortimer continued."Would Joseph Umland and Nevaeh Reed please come up and get your Head Student badges?" He couldn't help but be displeased with the former's new badge. Hopefully Mr. Umland had worked on his anger issues within the last few years " In addition I'd like to call up Emerald Brockert, Kir McLeod, Victor Callhan and Isaac Song to recieve their prefect badges. Congratulations." His face beamed with pride as Emerald took her spot on the stage along with her classmates and recieved her badge.

"We have two new staff members to announce tonight. Professor Brooding will be taking over Potions and Coach Reilly will be taking over for Quidditch. I trust you will all treat them with the respect they deserve." Blatant lie, he didn't expect teenagers to be respectful one little bit, but let that be a warning to them. " I am pleased," Another blatant lie, he couldn't care less, "to announce that this year instead of each house having it's own Quidditch team, as we've had trouble with that within the last few years, that we will instead be having an All Star Team, made up of the best Quidditch players in the school that will be playing against teams from other schools. More details will be posted in your common rooms.

"In addition, this year's Midsummer Event will be the Fair. Details on that will also be posted in later in the year. Now we will sing the school song." Yet another blatant lie. They would be singing the song, not him. Lyric sheets were passed around and the song began.

Every day we strive
Learning to survive
Life’s hardships and to solve its mystery.
Learning to defend
Our honour and our friends,
Flying high to meet our destiny
We will stand and face those who want to harm us.
We won’t let the world transfigure, jinx or charm us
I won’t fight alone, as long as you are with me.
Sonora be my home, my tutor and my spirit
Vasita quoque floeat; Even the desert blooms.
.

That done, he dug into his steak and bourbon.

Kyte Collindale

Kyte dropped into his habitual seat next to Ben at the feast. He usually didn’t pay much attention to the announcements because they were a lot less interesting that imagining his classmates naked. At the returning feast, there were pretty slim pickings as far as girls went. Pecari didn’t have that many who were old enough for it not to be creepy with. Tess was off limits as ‘best mate’s girlfriend.’ Not that he had never imagined Tess naked. It was hard not to given that she sometimes wore really skimpy pyjamas around the common room. But he only ever did it by accident. That left him imagining the boys naked (which was also fun just… he had more experience of what naked boys looked like cos he was one - well, he was like… when he was in the shower and stuff. Right now he was clothed. It would be inappropriate not to be. Of course, it could still be surprisingly fun exploring naked boys whose bodies you weren’t familiar with - just getting naked with people in general was fun) or Lily, who was a very boyish girl anyway. Subsequently, Joseph Umland was already back to his seat with the Head Boy badge before Kyte remembered that was something he was meant to care about.

"Man, I can't believe neither of us got it!" Kyte muttered to Ben. Admittedly, his own chances had been seriously dented by the fact that he had not even made the ballot. Based on what the staff knew about him, they had not seemed to feel he was a suitable candidate. And the stuff they knew was only the tip of the iceberg. They did not.know that there were herbs in his trunk that were nothing to do with herbology. They did not know that the theory question (self-posed) he had given the most ever thought to was whether, if you tranfigured something into a trippy hallucinogenic rainforest slug, would it have the same properties as the real thing? Nor did they know (unless Professor Skies had seen him surreptitiously licking his classwork) he had investigated this (result: inconclusive. Hard to say whether it was impossible or he just sucked at Transfiguration). They didn’t know that he mentally undressed almost all his peers and some of the faculty on a regular basis. And they still had found him a terrible enough person not to put him on the ballot. Whilst Ktye was the first to say that the staff were stuck up, no fun and picky as all heck (even if some of them were damn attractive) he had decided to claim this as a perverse badge of honour. It sucked for Ben though, who had actually wanted it.

“Sorry for you and Tess, man,” he sympathised, once the announcements were over and the food had appeared. Joe Umland. What was so freaking good about Joe Umland? Just because he was organised, nice, well-qualified and had nice teeth. “It’s like a freaking Teppenpaw conspiracy sometimes. They seem to win everything.”

“Hey, Kyte,” Ben greeted his roommate cheerfully as the other joined him at the Pecari table, quickly fell quiet as the first years started to get sorted. He held little personal interest in the small new students, but he cheered for the ones that pulled a brown badge out of the potion, hoping they were Quidditch players who could fill the vacancies left by the graduated former seventh years. Actually, he hoped that for all the new kids, because Quidditch was no fun if you had nobody to play against, and filling all the House teams hadn’t happened in a while.

It was a small class though and he wasn’t sure they could manage to fill out all the vacancies even if every last one of them joined, which was statistically unlikely. Pity. But the end of the line meant that Head Students were about to be announced and he sat up straight, more attentive than he had ever before been to Headmaster Brockert’s words.

Joe Umland and Nevaeh Reed.

Ben deflated. He sent a grimace of commiserating sympathy to Tess. Joe and Nevaeh were fine people and he liked them both well enough, but they weren’t him and Tess. He’d wanted to have matching badges with his girlfriend.

He was just coming to terms with the disappointment when Kyte put in his two cents, and Ben couldn’t help chuckling a little because Kyte, at least, hadn’t even been in the running. “I shall get over it in time,” he intoned in a dramatic way that could only be interpreted that this had already happened and now he was just playing it up for sympathy. “I only hope you, too, will survive this crushing defeat.”

After food appeared, Kyte seemed to shared a more serious bit of sympathy for the loss, though a Teppenpaw conspiracy did seem a bit far fetched. Even if they had won the last few House Cups pretty soundly. Maybe there was something to that after all?

“No, it’s fine,” Ben assured, “I’m more worried about what this new school wide Quidditch team is going to do to my chances of being Captain.” Jos had been an actual captain last year (even if there hadn’t been any games) while Ben had just been Ingrid’s Assistant Captain. “If him being Head Boy gives me a better shot at being Quidditch Captain, I’ll take that trade.” The school seemed to like to spread out the badges when possible so he hoped that applied here, too.

“I hope Tess isn’t too upset though.”
