Planning for the Future (tag Fortune, Xarryn)
by Phil Carson
Two Pecaris had joined Phil at the Aladren table at his invitation, and the three boys sat together eating lunch, a sixth year, a fifth year, and fourth year. All three were in the Gaming Club, and all three were also in the Dueling club, with the older two leading the both of those. Phil had been planning to leave the Gaming Club to Fortune, but Billy had graduated first and tagged him for Dueling before Phil could make his claim on the fifth year's time. So Phil had arrange this meeting to sort out the successions and make sure everyone knew who was in charge of what and when.
"Okay, so I have two more years left at Sonora, and next year is my seventh and I'm an Aladren, so that means I'm going to be eating, breathing, and sleeping RATS prep, and definitely can't run any gaming campaigns. Fortune has CATS this year." Fortune was not an Aladren, though, so Phil wasn't quite sure how much that was going to affect Fortune's availability. "So I was thinking, Fortune, maybe you want to try out running a campaign this fall before that gets crazy, and then I'll run the gaming sessions in the spring so you can study, and then you take over running games again full-time next year when you're between tests, and I'll just be support and do the administrative stuff like advertising and making arrangements with Mr. Tarquin. And I don't know how much of Dueling you want to hand over to Xarryn while you're doing that?"
He glanced over at the younger Pecari who had volunteered to help with one or both clubs as needed, though Phil wasn't sure the kid was focused enough to be able to plan and run a whole campaign, and since Billy had been able to run the Dueling Club, he figured Xarryn would probably be of more help there, while he tapped Fortune for the harder job that required a lot more organization and planning.

Phil had some scheming in mind when he'd asked to meet up, Fortune just knew it. It was about the school clubs and such, and Fortune wasn't quite sure where that was going. As far as he could tell, he was doing an alright job at handling the dueling club. Nobody had died or been seriously injured... yet. Phil was running the gaming club, but next year was his last year, and if he was looking to hand that club over to Fortune as well... Well that would make his life rather busy. Not that he actually had a lot else going on, other than studying and such.
Fortune found Phil at the appointed time and place and listened to the older boy's plan. He nodded along, the logic made sense, and also explained why Xarryn was here. "It doesn't sound like a bad plan to me." He paused and thought another moment. "I can handle a game or so this year. It probably won't be anything really elaborate. If I'm doing something bigger next year, someone will need to help out with Dueling, and possibly take over completely." He smiled at Xarryn, "Think you're up for that? I can deputize you this year to start easing you into it if you think that would help." Billy hadn't really done that for him, but to be fair, Billy had quite a bit on his mind last year and Fortune had sorta stepped in anyway to help out unofficially.
Xarryn had a little bit of an idea of why he was sitting here at the Aladren table with two older students. Phil had asked if he wanted to help out with running the gaming and/or dueling clubs before inviting him, and the two older boys were the presidents of those clubs, so it seemed likely that was what they were here to talk about. He just wasn't sure how he fit into it.
As Phil talked, it became a little clearer. Xarryn was kind of relieved it didn't sound like anyone was expecting him to run anything in the game club. He could barely keep track of his character sheet, and from how Phil did it, it looked like DMing required a lot of writing and reading. Dueling club was good. There wasn't any writing or reading involved with that, so far as he'd been able to tell.
He nodded in agreement to Fortune, grinning. "Ready to be your deputy, sheriff!" he said cheerfully. The Old West wasn't the High Seas, of course, but he knew about it. The trips to Tumbleweed had helped a lot with that, and the ghost shows had been both informative and remarkably similar to some of the reenactments he'd been a part of on his dad's cruise ship.
