Continuing a legacy (tag Professor Brooding-Hawthorne, the potions one)
by Ellie Alperton
One of Ellie’s first acts a prefect had been to speak up at a prefect meeting about LGBTQIA+ resources on campus. The school had always felt very friendly and accommodating to her, from the fact that she had been allowed to sleep in the correct dormitory, to being part of the LGBTQIA+ booth at the fair, led by the school’s openly gay head boy.
Still, however progressive a space, there was always progress to be made. It sometimes felt like the LGBTQ+ friendliness was based on particular students and their presence, rather than being enshrined in policy. A lot of the resources in the library were McLeod Foundation related, and she wasn’t sure what happened when the only remaining McLeod graduated (answer, she had volunteered to take over managing those, for the given value of student presence it required).
Alongside any changes to policy that were needed, she also wanted Sonora to continue being visibly friendly, sociable and transparent about having an LGBTQIA+ community. For now, it seemed, that was up to her. Hopefully, if she started something social, like a club, there would be enough interested people that she could keep passing on its leadership. She had to admit that it was hard to enshrine something like that in policy, though she hoped the staff would understand the importance of protecting and helping it.
She knocked on Professor Brooding-Hawthorne (the potions one)’s door.
“Hello. Professor Skies said I needed to get a staff member to sign off my club proposal. I thought you’d be the best person to ask.” She laid the form, which she had filled out in careful and extensive detail, with black ink for legibility but rainbow bullet points and headings, on Professor Brooding-Hawthorne’s desk. “I liked that Dorian made a positive space for us at the fair. I’d like that to be more of a permanent thing. At first, it’s going to be predominantly social. Those are the points under LGBTQIA+ café. I’d like to make MARS into a casual queer friendly social space once a week for people to just hang out and be, and not have to worry about whether that’s going to be an issue. I also think there could be other events we do, like community talks and things, but that’s going to be determined by the needs and interests of those who show up.”

Dorian had a legacy and the fact that that legacy was Ellie Alperton was beautiful. Mary accepted the paper she was given and spent a moment reading it over even though she was already on board. Any Aladren would be disappointed if Mary didn't read their petition, but especially Ellie. Plus, Mary was supposed to be responsible band stuff.
When she was done and when Ellie had finished, Mary beamed at her. "Yes, absolutely! Other than being a name on the back of the red tape, how can I support you? I'm very excited you're doing this, and proud of you for taking the initiative."
“Thank you,” Ellie beamed. Hearing ‘I’m proud of you’ from a teacher was something she relished, and it was interesting getting it more for herself as a person than for an academic achievement.
She considered Professor Brooding-Hawthorne’s question carefully. It had been one of the trickiest things about putting together the proposal, feeling like it had to cover absolutely everything possible, but not being entirely sure what that might be.
“Well, you’d always be very welcome to come join us. And I think that would be nice, sometimes.” Having an actual adult around was, to Ellie, a reassuring thing, and bound to be useful. “I mean, a lot of the things we need, you’re already doing. You’re… here. What do you wish you’d had when you were at school?” she asked. “Then I guess we can check if Sonora’s already doing it.”

Mary smiled a bit sadly at Ellie's question, in large part because it was what every LGBTQ person thought about sometimes. What would have changed things for her? What would have made her feel safe and valuable? Of course, Mary had come out very young and the real issues she'd faced around Ellie's age was becoming an orphan and losing her brother. That was different.
"I guess I wish I had adults to show me I could be happy someday," she decided, not having been close to any at the time. "I can try to be that," she added with a small smile. Then she thought a bit more. "I would have liked to learn about dating and safety. I'm not giving very fun answers though... I am happy to serve the needs of the group! Things are different than they were twenty years ago."
