The first couple of weeks for Tabitha had flown by so quickly that Tabitha wasn't entirely convinced that they had actually happened. She and Mary had spent a week in Greece with Darius and Evangeline and the twins which had been lovely and relaxing and Tabitha had slept a lot and been fed delicious meals and had felt rather pampered. There had also been long walks in the evening along the beach with both Darius and Mary where she had slowly shared what was going on in her brain. There had been a lot to dig through, a lot of feelings and, Tabitha admitted, a few tears and also a fair bit of raised voices - mostly from herself and Darius.
It had helped her, to be amongst only family. Tabitha might've said friends once but she knew Darius and Evangeline had become a lot more than that and she was grateful. Mary, as her wife, was also family and Tabitha never wanted this little family to change.
Well, that wasn't quite true...
Following the week in Greece, Tabitha had arranged passage to Lebanon and from there, she and Mary had travelled to the Cedar Forests. There had been many days of hiking, a difficult feat in the hot weather and Tabitha was thankful for vest tops, capri pants and her short hair. Also, magic but Tabitha liked to do certain things traditionally and that included hiking. Of course, she wasn't a fool. She still took advantage of the Extension Charm on her rucksack.
She had lead the way through the forests, feeling very much in her element as she found broken shell bits of Occamy Eggs and the odd stray blue or purple feather, indicating movement of the Nest through the area. Tabitha kept everything she found, the shells for Mary to use in potions and the feathers as simply mementos. Everything was documented in a brand new red leatherbound journal, through her scribblings or her sketches. Tabitha was thorough in everything she did.
It was through her tracking skills that Tabitha and Mary finally found the Occamies themselves, nesting in a small clearing deep in the heart of the forest. Determined not to disturb them and therefore scare them off, Tabitha and Mary set up camp a safe distance away and set up wards to keep any noise they made from reaching the creatures. Tabitha was determined to spend at least a couple of days there, documenting everything from their eating habits to how newborn Occamies hatched.
Watching hatchings brought many thoughts to Tabitha's mind which, on one of the many warm early evenings of their stay, she decided to share with Mary.
"Mary," she began, getting her wife's attention. "I was thinking... well, this is maybe going to be more of a suggestion really..."
She was a little hesitant to pursue this line of conversation and she looked down at her journal which was open on her lap, the sketched eyes of a baby Occamy staring back at her. Another moment and Tabitha decided to continue.
"When we return to Sonora, or perhaps even to Greece... I was thinking we could perhaps start... making inquiries or... filing paperwork..." she trailed off, looking at her wife to see if Mary would twig where she was going with this. "To set the process of adoption in motion," she finished, her eyes fixed on her wife, not wanting to miss a single flicker of emotion.

Between the two, Mary much preferred being at Darius and Evangeline's in Greece than out on the trail. That being said, it wasn't all bad, and she especially liked to see how excited Tabitha got. Plus, it was good for them both and a good reminder that, while Mary may have been more suited to fineries and things, with her only real foray into anything rough and tumble being her chosen profession, she wasn't just that. She could make it on the trail and she could keep up. She rarely got to wear her dresses out here, which was a shame, but surviving was a challenge she appreciated too. It was a reminder that life was beautiful. Seeing lil baby occamies only served to further underscore that fact.
Evenings like tonight, where they could stop for a moment to enjoy the world around them and their time together, and where everything was as quiet as a whisper, were Mary's favorite. She looked up when Tabitha said her name, a small, easy smile on her face. It hardened some with nerves when Tabitha said she had a suggestion. Mary was pretty sure she'd been doing okay so far, but if she'd put their survival at risk, or their mission, she definitely wanted to know.
But that's not what Tabitha was talking about at all. She was talking about . . Oh. Oh.
Mary stared in silence for a moment before she burst into gales of laughter. She put her hands over her mouth to stifle the noise as her eyes teared up with mirth. Taking a breath and moving her hands to her chest, where her heart rate was returning to a normal pace, Mary smiled at her wife. "My love, you said paperwork and I thought you were about to ask for a divorce. You scared me half to death!" Taking another deep breath to get her humor set aside where it belonged for what was really meant to be a serious conversation, Mary smiled, her eyes warm and liquid. "I would really like that," she said. "I've been thinking about kids a lot. I'd love that."
She thought for a moment to ask whether Tabitha was sure she was ready, but the Defense professor wasn't one to do anything she wasn't ready for, at least confident she could handle. Kids probably scared her more than werewolves, and definitely more than dragons, but Tabitha wouldn't have brought it up if she weren't ready.
Mary stood and crossed their small campfire to sit beside Tabitha, snuggling into her side and resting her chin on Tabitha's shoulder. Looking up at her from only an inch or two away, she beamed at the woman she'd been so lucky to meet. "You're gonna be a really good mom."
Of all the reactions that Tabitha might’ve guessed at, Mary bursting into fits of laughter would not have been one of them. She was momentarily confused at her laughing wife and wouldn’t if she had developed heatstroke and was therefore, delirious. In the heat of the Middle East, that wouldn’t have been too far outside the realms of possibility. Children were a serious topic which normally meant calm voices and lots of eye contact and very often, frowns as one battled various inner thoughts. Laughter didn’t normally come into it.
Concern flickered across Tabitha’s face as she watched Mary wipe away her tears. The Defence professor was not entirely sure what to say or do so she waited, quietly, for her wife to calm down and explain her thought process and enlighten her.
“Divorce?!” Tabitha couldn’t help the volume that her voice achieved, her expression of concern shifting to one of horror and fear. Her sentences came out in stammers as panic flooded through her. How could her wife have thought that? How was that option the first thing Mary had come to? Had Tabitha really been such a burden the past year that Mary had been thinking of divorce? “I-I wouldn’t ever... Haven’t ever... D-divorce has never been...”
She was trying to explain that the process of divorce had never crossed Tabitha’s mind and she hoped that it would never become an option. Trying to calm the panic that was currently flowing through her, Tabitha took a deep breath. “Mary, you’re my wife and I hope you will always be my wife.”
Tabitha hoped that had cleared things up.
Mary’s eyes reminded Tabitha of the campfire that they were both sitting near and Tabitha was very relieved that they both seemed to be on the same page. Tabitha wasn’t immediately ready but from what little she knew, the adoption process could take quite a long time. That would be enough to allow her to prepare for the new direction their lives were going in.
Tabitha’s arm automatically slipped around Mary as the Potions professor cuddled into her side. It was a comfort and familiar and it made Tabitha close her eyes and just relish in the feeling of her wife holding her. She smiled a little at Mary’s compliment.
“We both will be,” she murmured before pressing a gentle kiss to the top of Mary’s head. The smell of jasmine invaded her nose and Tabitha smiled, enjoying the scent. “It’ll be a brand new adventure.”

Mary put a soothing hand on Tabitha's arm, smiling softly and as reassuringly as she could. "I know, my love," she said quietly. "That's why I was so confused. I've never doubted for a moment that you love me. And I love you also."
Cuddling commenced and Mary felt warm and snuggly in her heart. It was moments like these that let her drift around in her thoughts without anything hurting, because it was all covered in softness. She could think about her brother, who would always be a child, and Michelle, who had left for a child, and her own mother who would have loved a child. Nothing was as she thought it would be but everything was much much better.
"I like our adventures," Mary replied. She'd found that she had closed her eyes and she opened them in time for Tabitha to kiss the top of her head. She promptly lifted her chin, demanding another kiss be planted on her mouth, and grinning at Tabitha when she got it. "You always get me to do things I wouldn't try by myself. I also like showering in a real shower though, I'm going to be real with you, my love," she laughed before nuzzling her head back down onto Tabitha's shoulder. "This is a really good summer."
