OOC - there's no class here, just the announcement :)
IC: Professor Brooding wanted to make sure that every opportunity was always open to every students. She'd once been told that the best students to offer leadership to were the ones you needed and the ones who needed you. She hoped that whatever this was -- which wasn't quite leadership but sort of -- would follow the same ideas. Somewhere amongst her scant advanced students, Mary wanted to find someone who needed her.
With that in mind, she began the first day of classes with an exciting announcement.
"Some of you heard this last year, but some of you are new to this class and I want to reiterate some details of the position," Mary began, smiling at her class. There had only been one student between the two classes to take her up on this opportunity last year, and she had since graduated. "The potions assistantship position for intermediate and advanced students varies, so please listen carefully if you are familiar only with the intermediate outline.
“Advanced students can expect to work with me to prepare ingredients and potions for upcoming classes and those interested in teaching Potions can help with grading papers and preparing lectures as well,” she tried to keep her description vague in case any additional opportunities arose later or in case some things turned out to be impossible. "I know many of you are interested in healing, so there are potential opportunities built into the program for that as well. It's individualized and I'll work with you on your particular goals." She smiled more mischievously. "I know that you aren't all planning to be potions masters, so if you are interested because you are just curious, that's alright too. However, I expect the same level of commitment and dedication to excellence."
Moving to stand beside her desk, Mary wrapped up her announcement with a ore logistical focus. "Students who are interested can talk with me after class or during my office hours. I am open to taking on two advanced students if they are in different years, so this could turn into a two year opportunity for those of you who are in your sixth year now. If you’re not sure whether you are interested, feel free to ask me questions after class as well."
With that done, Professor Brooding began their lesson for the day.

Zevalyn stayed after class the day Professor Brooding made the potions assistant announcement. She had considered it last year, but she had still been adjusting to Advanced Classes and enjoying her first year of actually being fully caught up with everyone else, and she just hadn't quite ever gotten around to volunteering. Plus, she had known Tess had done so, and she didn't remember it being made quite so clear then as it had today that more than one Advanced student would be accepted if they were in different years. And if none of the other seventh years had applied last year, they were unlikely to do so this year, so she definitely wasn't taking a spot away from somebody who wanted it badly.
That gave her the impetus she needed to approach the potions professor. "Hi," she said, mostly out of ingrained habit when opening a conversation. "Ah, about the assistant position," she continued, "how much time would that take? I don't want to overextend myself with Head Girl, and the concert thing, and five RATS to study for, but it does sound interesting, and I'm kind of thinking of going into teaching, though I haven't decided on a subject yet, so the grading and lecture preparation might be good experience to have, to see if that is what I want to do."
"Also, I'm muggleborn, so I don't really know what all the magical career options are, so I don't know, would we be able to sample around and get a taste of what kind of potions related careers exist, so I maybe won't have to put Undecided on all of my college applications?"

Professor Brooding smiled when Zevalyn Ives stayed after class. She was intrigued by the girl's interest, in part because she seemed to be interested in everything. There was a lot on her shoulders, and Mary wondered if she'd want to take any more on. She'd always been prone to picking up more and more when she was a student, and it had led to some truly incredible experiences, albeit some challenging ones as well.
"So long as you don't think it will overexert you, I'd be happy to have you in this position," Mary said. She thought to mention that her blood status had little to do with this, but decided Miss Ives was pointing it out for logistical purposes more than anything else and left it well alone. "Exploring career options would be great! There's a lot more than just healing arts, and I don't often have the excuse to look into the other fields, so that will be fun for both of us I think, and very helpful." She thought through some examples in her head, wondering at the possibilities.
Shaking herself a little, Mary returned to the moment. "As far as the hours expected, it depends primarily on the work you have to do and how fast you get it done. And how well," she added, hoping she wouldn't have to ask Miss Ives, or anyone, to redo something. "If you are looking largely at the teaching side of things, that can be a bit more paperwork oriented and require less time in the labs here, although I can't let you take any student documents out of my office for confidentiality reasons. Still, you would be welcome to spend time here in chunks and bring homework as you please, to break up your time. I can't promise you a good grade on your potions RATS but I don't doubt that you will learn things in this position that will help you on it," Mary said. If nothing else, Miss Ives would probably be more comfortable asking for help as she needed it.
"As the year moves along, we can consider the possibility of you helping me with some of the lectures, or set up tutoring hours for you for the beginner students as well," Mary said, trying to run through her options in hypotheticals. "Are you particularly interested in the practical work of potions making? Just so I know how to gear our time together."
OOC - You saw already, but just let me know whether you'd like to have other threads dedicated to this at all, or just have it be unspoken. :)
