It is once more about to be a month wherein we push ourselves to write more and more! To anyone who would like to be part of the cabin, reply with your username on the camp nano website and I will add you. (Remember that you have to set your project goal before I can add you to the cabin.)

To anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, you can join us at www.campnanowrimo.org and join a virtual cabin, where we can keep each other up to date on our progress to reaching our individually-set goals.

There will be challenges weekly (or perhaps twice weekly if we're answering them speedily?) to help inspire you to meet your goals. Good luck, everybody, and happy posting!

--NaNo Assistant, AKA Jake Manger etc. (I'm running this month's NaNo because Liliana's author, who usually runs these, has been a bit swamped lately.)

Our first challenge idea comes to us thanks to Ginger Pierce's author:

Write a post wherein your character is sleep deprived, either from staying up too late, waking up too early, or not sleeping at all, and show us how it affects them the next day, physically and/or cognitively.

This week's challenge is about prejudice and how we all deal with it:

Write a post in which your character deals with prejudice OR write a post in which your character is prejudiced against someone else. This can take the form of action or thought, but it must play a significant part of the post.

He won't hide your spectacles

Write a post that shows a moment of harmony between two characters who usually don't get a long OR a moment of discord between two who usually do. Can be two of your own or co-written with another author.

Hi,

A couple of things that are frequently observed...
- it takes a long time to make friends in RPG-land
- there are always a bunch of interactions you picture happening that never do

I was wondering whether, to combat both of these, we could try having some 'Sonora: Fast and Furious' sessions. The idea would be that the word count rule would be suspended for some period of time (24 hours... a weekend) and people could just post little snapshots - one liners that never got worked into posts, or the mundane every day things you never get around to writing.

I don't know whether we'd want this to happen in a particular place, e.g. to keep it all on the sandbox rather than spread across the site, and whether we'd want any other rules (for example, I feel like fast and furious posting could lead to decisions that are later regretted, so it could be that it all takes place on the sandbox and then authors have to mutually agree whether or not they want to include it as canon).

Thoughts and feedback welcome.

Liliana & Farrah

July 26, 2016 3:40 PM
Apologies ahead of time, I was too lazy to summarize. But this is what Farrah & I thought:

Farrah Welsh: so, is Skies idea like just one liner posts back and forth between characters?

Liliana Bannister: Wait...what was her idea?

Farrah Welsh: oh, on the OOC

Liliana Bannister: I gotta go look at it, one sec

Farrah Welsh: Fast and Furious thing

Liliana Bannister: Yep, found it! I think she means instead of the word count rule we just post drabbles. I'm not sure if that's needed though cause 200 words is not very much, everyone just tends to write way more than that. 200 words is really just one paragraph, maybe two

Farrah Welsh: yeah, that's true

Liliana Bannister: I really like the idea though

Farrah Welsh: is it because one thread takes soooo long to get through?

Liliana Bannister: Yeah, I think so. Because I've noticed, from the Barnaby/Sammy thread (which are roughly 400 words a post) that we all write crazy long posts. The Barnaby/Sammy thread looks super short, but it's still twice the word count. Okay...well my last post in that thread is not quite 300 but still haha

Farrah Welsh: yeah, I tend to write between 400 and 600 words for my posts because 200 seem so short. I mean, I totally get what she's saying and I'm fine with it so long as it's like not all the time because I don't want new people thinking one liner posts are ok

Liliana Bannister: However, Nat & I did some "Fast & Furious" style sessions for Lena & Olivier to sketch their relationship out

Farrah Welsh: but it is hard to make friends when threads take forever

Liliana Bannister: It works and progresses quickly, but we included some action into the dialogue. Perhaps instead of saying one-liners, we said dialogue only accompanied by actions. That eliminates much of what causes the posts to be long but authors still have to put in thought into what they're doing

Farrah Welsh: so, remove inner dialogue? :O

Liliana Bannister: Just for the Fast & Furious bits?

Farrah Welsh: I'll have to see how other people do it to get the flow of it (I'm not very good at figuring things out without visuals)

*Example to come once permission from Lena's author is granted.

tl;dr version: basically we like the idea but had a couple suggestions

Just Liliana

July 26, 2016 3:49 PM
Decisions that may later be regretted = life.

I don't know about others but I wouldn't mind it if F&F posting caused something I might later regret because life is messy and sometimes people do things they later regret, if we were to do F&F posting then I think it could be fun to have it be instant canon.

I understand that others might not agree with that, so maybe before the F&F thread occurs the authors would have to say which kind of posting they want that particular thread to be, either a rough draft or a final draft? Just by including 'RD' or 'FD' in the title, that way a responding author would have full knowledge going in what kind of thread they were getting themselves into.

"Stolen from the boards of another RPG site, this game is just to have some OOC fun. Here's the idea, leave an OOC question for a character, an author will then reply IC and either leave that question for another character to answer again or leave a different question for the next character. These questions can be anything from "what's your best memory?" to "do you prefer strawberries or blueberries?""

Olivier walked down the stairs and saw Lena sitting in the living room. "Hey," he said tentatively. "What're you doing?"

Lena's head whipped up, obviously startled. "Reading" she said in a slightly shaky voice. The intrusion was welcome, and she hoped her shock would not make him think otherwise. Not breaking eye contact, she quickly added "What're you up to?"

Olivier shrugged, offering a small smile. "Not much, just reviewing some school stuff for next term..." He trailed off, looking away and running a hand through his hair. "I could use a break. Could you...use some company?"

Before he finished his sentence she scooted away from him, and immediately pat the vacated spot, welcoming him over.

Nathan

July 26, 2016 7:02 PM
This looks like the kind of posting Salem did my first couple of terms before a word count rule was instituted. I think it did work well for much quicker turn around and more natural conversations. (Now, I need to allot a good hour to write a post whereas in that form I could just jot out the first response that came to mind and some threads flew out like they were all but instant messages if both parties were online at the time.) I definitely think we need to have a specific separate room dedicated to that kind of thing because those threads can grow really fast and it will really clutter up the other boards with posts only a few sentences long.

DH Skies

July 28, 2016 8:23 AM
Agreed. I mean, we don't know that it would lead to problems, so I guess there's no point building safe-guards in against a problem we don't know exists. Maybe we should try it in its simplest form (minimal rules/structure) and then if there are problems, we can work from there.

In response to the above, and on a similar note, I wouldn't lean towards setting any rules like "Dialogue and actions only" cos that can be limiting for characters who aren't very chatty. Again, if we have a problem after trialling it, then we can work something out. I mean, I feel if it evolved into a more in depth thread then - whilst that does sort of halt the fast and furiousness - it's not really a bad thing.

Some examples that have come to mind recently might be Jamie post Quidditch match - 'Did you see that capture? Cool right?' - or the fact that Cassandra compliments pretty much all girls. For both of us, we haven't ever posted those, but it'd be cool if we knew how other people reacted. I think there's a time when everyone has relied on checking in chatzy 'So, if my character said/did this, what would yours say/do?' and it'd be fun to have times when play those out. Definitely not all the time though - just specific events.

Where would be a good place? I feel it would be good to contain it, even if all the threads are different places. The Sandbox is under-used but it's meant for new authors, and would easily give the wrong impression.... The mirage chamber...?

Also, how long and how do we time it so that it works for different timezones?

I'm also thinking this will be something to trial next term, unless people are so keen that they want it this weekend, as otherwise there's a Quidditch match or the ball on, and I don't want to take away from those.

Maybe trial it over the weekend in Muggle Studies since we are not using that classroom? John Umland

August 04, 2016 2:14 PM
As a few recent posts have indicated, John is looking for a date to the Ball. As he lacks female friends at Sonora to an even greater extent that he thinks he does, his method of going about this is to approach literally every girl in the Intermediate classes (beginning with the fourth and fifth years then jumping down to the third years and then up to sixth and seventh years if necessary), attempt to initiate conversation about the lesson they’re in, and then ask “will you go to the ball with me?” Upon less-than-violent rejection, the follow-up question “can I convince you to spare a dance?” would then be asked before he either wandered off or reverted to talking about class.

Feel free to use this information as you will (having your characters mock him behind his back, be horrifically offended that they – or for male characters, their established dates – have been asked that way/at all, go deliberately and elaborately out of their ways to avoid him because word of this scheme has begun to spread, etc), but if your response at the time was anything particularly notable (hysterical laughter, less-than-flattering comments about his person or parentage, attempted violence, threats to ask male relatives to inflict violence, actually giving an affirmative response to either question, etc.), could you let me know? Thanks!

Ginger

August 05, 2016 9:24 AM
Ginger would have been polite and sympathetic as she let him down gently and said her own date was also a prefect so she was really sorry but she couldn't help him out. As she and Jake had their first kiss on the ground of the Quidditch Pitch in front of everybody who came to the Tepp-Pecari game, this answer probably didn't come as a great surprise to John, assuming he bothered to ask her at all.

Laila & Caelia

August 05, 2016 9:48 PM
I'll do them of order of how he might ask, according to what you wrote. I didn't put Liliana in there because she's also a prefect.

Caelia:
Would have appeared visibly uncomfortable & said she was already going with Jack Spencer. Would have answered to the second question with something like "yes, I suppose so?" She would have sounded really unsure/uncomfortable when she said that. She then would have added an "if Jack's okay with it." She probably wouldn't have wanted to do it but would have felt really bad saying no. However, since Caelia embodies a lot of things that John doesn't seem to like I don't know if he would have even asked her.

Laila:
First answer: "Sorry, I'm already going with my friend, Jax." And then for re: spare a dance, would have said she'd ask Jax if that was alright with him and get back to John on that.

If John asked her to the dance, she would have looked really guilty about having to say no because she is going with Chuck (Gia has a difficult time letting people down). However, at the second request, she would tell him that she was sure Chuck wouldn't mind if she helped him out and danced the Prefect dance with him should he still need her to.

Yearbook Staff

August 10, 2016 5:30 PM
Hey Everyone!

It’s that time for the yearbook survey. For those of you who are new, the yearbook is something that I do as a side project for the site. It is not maintained by the staff, so questions should be directed to me or my email, sonorarpkids@gmail.com.

Every term when the Midsummer event takes place, a yearbook is provided to the students as a 'thanks for the year' treat. The students participate with the yearbook by providing surveys for the award section of the book. You, as the author, will complete the forms for each of your characters as best as you can. This will get easier each year as you begin to develop relationships with your character's peers.

PLEASE NOTE: I will notice when a large number of surveys are favoring his/her own characters in the ‘School Wide’ section. The point of this section is to be fair to ALL students at the school and to NOT try to win all of the votes for your own characters. I will not accept these votes when it is showing favoritism. I understand that sometimes your character does fit into a category for that section and that is fine, but when an author has multiple characters and they all vote the same in that section, it’s favoritism and takes away from the fun of the yearbook. (This is not saying that you cannot vote for your own character in the categories, this note is only in reference to the school wide votes)

I am asking for all surveys to be completed by August 26th as this will give me time to tally them and complete the yearbook by the time the Bonfire rolls around. Please email them to me at the email address provided above.

Here is the most current active list to base your answers on (please remember that this list is for characters who have actively posted in two separate threads both pre-midterm and post-midterm, Welcoming Feast not included. If you have posted and are not on the list, please let me know).

Dad spent a whole hour trying to fix internet. My phone will occasionally work with it but his computer is the only computer that connects. However, I'm not allowed to use it so I am currently using my cell data as internet for my computer for job applications and the like meaning I will probably not be posting much as data is limited and I need to reserve it for the RL job search. As such, if we're in a thread, I'm sorry maybe we can work it out on a messaging app or something because I hate to leave any one hanging but I will be semi-absent for the foreseeable future.

Just in case you don't know/need a refresher, my (active) characters are:
Professor Pye, Liliana, Tobi, Barnaby, Caelia, Arne, Laila, Madeleine

I'm really not sure who I have threads going with right now and I'm trying not to use too much data on non-job things so I don't really feel like going around the boards and checking. However, I figure if you're in a thread with me, you'd know!

Thanks, have a great day everyone! :)

Hi guys,

As it stands, we have 8 apps total for the new year, and only one new author. We need more than that to make a year group fun and successful, so please get out there and advertise Sonora!

Advertising season is upon us once again! So, here is how to spread the word about Sonora.

We do most of our advertising through fanfiction.net, though obviously if you are part of other communities who are happy for you to advertise there, or have any friends you think would be interested, explore those avenues too.

Reviews MUST:

- Be on good quality stories. If they are riddled with grammar errors or unrealistic characters, move on

- Contain feedback on the story. No one wants to be spammed with adverts that make them feel like you didn't even read what they'd written, so before plugging Sonora, be sure to talk about the story. At the very least, mention specific things you enjoyed about it (detailed descriptions, good characterisation etc). If there is anything you didn't like, mention this too in the form of constructive criticism. I received a PM back from an author the other day thanking me for leaving this kind of review (including criticisms) rather than making a bland comment like 'Great job.'

- Advertise Sonora! Give a brief explanation of the site and the address, with a break in it to get through ff's filtering systems. I usually go with 'I'm from a creative writing RPG which involves all original characters and I feel you'd fit in well. Our applications are currently open or you can play on our 'sandbox' page to get a feel for it. It's sonora. terragenaonline. net (without the space) and I hope you'll check us out. Please message me if you have any questions.'

Obviously, the last it only applies if you have an ff account, which brings me onto...

Things to consider:

- We don't insist on you having an ff.net acount to review. However, I have found authors often message me with further questions about the site, and it can be useful for them to have a personal contact to talk it through with

- Consider searching for fics with OCs (original characters) as these people are already stepping slightly further away from the core HP-verse and thus might be more interested in a site like Sonora

When you have done reviews, add them to the counter to the top of the page. It can't do maths, so put in the UPDATED TOTAL. E.g. if it says '5' and you've done 3, enter '8.'

It really only takes a few reviews from each author and then it all adds up!

In case this would be a concern of your character’s, you should know that all invitees will be society females and Joella’s parents will also be at the house.

Other friends present at the party will be Emmy-Lou Scott and Audrey Montague (a peripheral character of mine who Joella probably mentions a lot when talking about her holidays or whatever).

Let me know if your character will be attending and if you are interested in all doing a cowrite for it?

Ingrid would be so, so excited and happy to be invited and would definitely come.

(Though am slightly confused about the statements that all other invitees are society and that Emmy-Lou is going, as those are contradictory?)

Emmy-Lou is a half-blood but her father is a society pureblood and so is her stepfather so I consider her as part of pureblood society since she is surrounded by these types of people and attends such events.

Gabriel Valenti

August 28, 2016 2:36 PM
Hello all! In honor of this momentous occasion, Gabriel Valenti will be trying to tie a bowtie. I was wondering if I could mention anyone helping (or attempting to help) him in this endeavor in my ball post for him? Thank you!

If he'd enlist the aid of a younger student, Jozua would be able to help after a few false starts as he tries to backward engineer how to do it for somebody else when he had only ever tied one on himself before.

Ginger, unfortunately, has no idea, or she'd be glad to help.

Diana accepts; her oldest brother would escort her and want to meet the parents before leaving her there and she'd be a little distant, if polite, toward Emmy-Lou, but other than that Diana and Jay agree to try their hardest to be normal.

Laila Kennedy

Laila, Gia, and Sammy are probably getting ready in MARS as it is a neutral territory. I believe I recall NeNaRT wanting to get ready there too?

I'm unsure who else might be going there but just in case there are a lot, Gia & I thought it might be nice to have a list in case a girl didn't want to get ready alone in their room I'm sure a flock of girls gathering together would get around in such a small school. Or perhaps if your character wanted to ask an older girl for help but didn't know who.

Anyway, you don't have to reply to this if you don't want to, just know it's here :)

Louis Valois et al

I'm off to France for a week starting tomorrow, and it's unlikely I'll be able to post during that time. However, I should still be on chatzy from time to time if anyone needs to catch me, and I will reply to any ball posts ASAP when I return!

(My characters are Rory Taransay, Louis Valois, Tess Whittaker, Finn Scott, and Sébastien Évreux if anyone isn't sure!)

I have finally completed them. Make sure to look at them in Chrome as that is the only browser that I know everything lines up for.

I apologize for any mistakes that I have missed!
