We're already Third Years! [tag roommates] by Lauren Song

It was crazy how quickly the years had gone by. Already Lauren was in her third year at Sonora and she loved it. She loved the classes, she loved her house, but most of all she loved her roommates. She enjoyed spending time with them and living in a room with other girls. There was something different about being close friends with girls. The only best friend she'd had growing up was her mom and her younger brother who would be joining her at Sonora next year.

Things were different here; a good different, even though she knew how much her mom suffered without her. There was some guilt that Lauren could never really hide from herself underneath the laughter and fun crafting and mounds of homework, as if going to boarding school was akin to abandoning her family. The tears her mom shed every time they parted seemed to add another chain on Lauren's shoulders, but she tried not to dwell on it too much. It wasn't her fault that she had to go to school just like it wasn't her fault that her dad had to work in Korea most of the year. But there was still a small, ugly part of her that poked and prodded especially during the first few weeks back at school.

Lauren kept silent about the guilt and she'd enjoyed the decorating party she and her roommates had had before the Welcoming Feast. Now that she was back in the room, she touched the photo collage she'd taped on the wall next to her bed. Isaac, Maia, and her mom smiled back at her. There wasn't anything to say to them right now, but she smiled back at them anyway.

The door opened and Lauren turned around to smile at her roommates, eager to forget the melancholy feelings. Even though they'd caught up during the first-year orientation, she still wanted to listen to them. Lauren didn't talk as much, but she contributed here and there and was excited to hear all about her roommates. Not to mention there were some cute boys at Sonora that she wouldn't mind chatting about either.

"Can you believe we're already third-years?" she said, flopping onto her bed. "But it feels like we've been roommates forever. That one guy you were talking to, Ginger, he was really cute! What was his name again? He's Prefect this year, right?"

OOC: Referencing Ginger's post in Cascade.

I know, right?! by Ginger

Ginger breezed into the room she shared with Lauren and Jemima. The recent memories of their decorating had come back in full force as she ascended the stairs, lifting her mood again to its usual state of cheery optimism after Jake's melancholy had drug it down a few notches. "Hey gals," she greeted, spirits buoyed even more at seeing both girls and the awesome job they'd done earlier.

"I know, right?!" Ginger exclaimed upon the observation that they were now third years. She bent down next to her trunk and had just begun to go looking for a nightgown when Lauren's question stopped her short. She looked up quickly and her cheeks flushed an instant red. "Yeah," she agreed, flustered, "That's Jake. Jake Manger. He is cute, er, I mean, yeah, he's the new prefect this year. And cute, too, obviously. He's the one I told you about? On the Quidditch team? Who gave me my broom and my orange ribbon?" Her fingers drifted up to touch the ribbon she was rarely without these days. It was starting to tatter just a little on the edges from all the wear, but she wouldn't think of replacing it.

She hadn't ever come right out and said she was crushing on Jake, of course, but he was usually the one she talked about most when her Quidditching came up - well, Jake or Alistair, but surely they couldn't think Ginger felt anything but friendly exasperation for Alistair (she was pretty sure he meant well, but he came of as ... a bit of a patronizing egotist sometimes ... most of the time).

And while she didn't think Lauren had any specific designs on Jake, either, Ginger couldn't help feeling like she was calling dibs as she casually remarked, "We've been friends for a while."

She looked down into her trunk, pulling out a nightgown more out of luck and habit than conscious choice. She was less than subtle in her attempt to redirect the conversation. She hadn't seen who Lauren ate with, so she aimed her query at Jemima instead. "What about you, Jemima, how was dinner with Owen?" While unsure if there was anything romantic between then, it was pretty clear the two were close. "How is he doing?"

Yay! Let's talk about boys! by Jemima

Jemima climbed the stairs, happy and full of a range of exciting dishes. On a slip of paper she wrote ‘Ate cheddar cheese soup and other delicious foods at Opening Feast with Owen,’ folded it into a star the way Lauren had taught them last year, and dropped it into a jar on the windowsill. It had been an idea she’d heard about at New Year but had decided would work just as well for a new school year - every time something good happened, you wrote it down and added it to the jar. At the end of the year, they would have lots of happy memories to look back on. It was, she thought, a nice parallel to the jar they’d had last year, which had been filled at the start of the year with inspirational messages, which any girl was welcome to take when she needed a little extra cheer.

She smiled as Ginger fumbled her way through explaining about Jake.

“It’s ok to say that you like him,” she said to Ginger, seeing as the other girl seemed to have difficulty expressing the sentiment, “To us, or to him too. If you don’t, you’ll just turn into my sister, and I’ll have to lock you and Jake in a room of mistletoe too!” She had told her room-mates about her successful scheming to get Francesca to actually act on her feelings at last year’s Christmas party.

“Do you like any boys, Lauren?” she asked. It was exciting to have girl friends to talk about this with. Francesca only seemed to have noticed boys recently and didn’t really want to talk about it, and Ingrid still preferred climbing trees, and thought that boys were icky (though had been strongly deterred by their mother from voicing this opinion, lest people got the wrong idea about her).

“I like Owen. When we grow up, we’re going to get married and be the world’s best husband and wife writer/illustrator team,” she added. “Dinner was nice - I had a little bit of lots of things, but there was a really good goulash near me. That was probably my favourite. How about you?” she added. In addition to talking about boys, Jemima loved to talk about food, and she figured it was best to have a choice of topics given that Ginger still seemed a little embarrassed to say much on one of the subjects.

OOC - I figured we could each add a few details about how the decorated. Though I thought maybe some kind of bonfire theme? (Yay orange)

I like this subject! by Lauren

Lauren couldn't help but giggle a little at Ginger's face when she brought up that one guy she had been talking with. She remembered vaguely Ginger telling them about him and she definitely remembered the ribbon. "You're lucky," she said, laying down on her stomach and propping up her head with her arms. She laughed at Jemima's threat, imagining how red Ginger would turn if she was actually locked up in a room with Jake. They would probably fall in love and live happily ever after and thank Jemima for it. "I'd help you, Jemima," she piped up teasingly.

The question was turned to her and Lauren shrugged. "There are a lot of cute boys here," she said. "I don't like like any of them, but I think the Aladren boys are pretty cute. I wish I could have a crush like you two." It seemed like having a crush was pretty nice. Cute boys seemed to be rampant here at Sonora, though their personalities didn't always match, but Lauren didn't really know what it meant to like a boy. She just thought they were all cute and liked to look at them.

It seemed like Jemima had her eyes set on Owen which meant only admiring Jake and Owen from afar. Ginger was lucky that she was friends with an older and a cute wizard. They were probably going to get married. Lauren grinned at Jemima's dream wondering when the three of them were going to get married, and to who. Would they all marry someone from Sonora? That would be so cool.

When her roommate brought up the subject of food, visions of Uncle Derek's home-cooked meals danced behind her eyes. She didn't have a very adventurous palate except when it came to spicy food. "What's goulash? I just had a chicken pot pie. It's my favorite food here. It was pretty good, but I kind of miss the Korean food my uncle made back home. He said he'd send me something while I'm at school. One day you both should visit me in California and he can make Korean food for all of us. He makes this kimchi fried rice really spicy and it's soooo good."

OOC: Sounds good to me!
