According to Josie’s mother she has dark brown hair just like her. According to Josie’s father she inherited the black hair and green eyes of his Scottish ancestors. They don’t argue about her fair skin, a testament of her mother’s good genetics, and they never doubt that the faint smattering of freckles across her nose comes from her father. She likes to run and the thin lines of her body reflect this healthy habit. Her fingers are thin and her hands pretty. Almost everything is little and small, but people marvel at her height, often wondering why she’s so little when her feet are so large.
Background
Deidre is Josie's dead mother. Owain is Josie's very much alive father. Minnie is Josie's brand spanking new step-mother. Daniel is step-brother 1. Samuel is step-brother 2.
Family & Friends
Josie's family was her mother Deidre and her father Owain. The sun rose and set on their family, they did everything together. Except for sneaking off to the rooftop to look at the city lights. That was something she only did with her father. They would always get into trouble when her mother found them up there, but it was always a lecture full of smiles and laughter. Then the eleventh year of her life rolled around. Deidre was driving back from the grocery store with a trunk full of bake sale goodies when a drunk driver ran right through her car. A T-bone steak can be life changing for some people, so can a T-boned car.
Something changed in Owain, almost overnight. He forbade her from her going up on the roof and began dating Minnie, just five months after Deidre’s death. Minnie had two non-magical sons, Daniel and Samuel, with her non-magical ex-husband. Josie was confused that two magical people would choose not to have any more children, but when her acceptance letter for Sonora came she suddenly wished that they had at least tried. Daniel and Samuel had already been awkward with her; they were both in high school and had no idea what to talk about with her and they most certainly did not try. They knew Minnie was magical, had accepted that they weren’t, had accepted Owain as their new step-father, but once they found out that Josie was magical they ignored her. It didn’t help that she looked like her mother, no matter what her father had used to claim about Scottish ancestors. To them, she was an outsider.
