Laurie had thought about this all midterm. He had come up with a flawless plan after hours and hours of thinking through things and making notes. At the end, he had come to the conclusion that he couldn’t live away from his friends for much longer. The whole midterm holiday Laurie had thought about this and how to contact Kitty and Michael without the leech of Preston knowing. It had taken a lot of time to come up with the plan, but he finally had managed to come up with a rather foolproof plan. It was going to be successful, he was sure of it.
The first step of his plan was finding a place where they could meet without the fear of beings spotted by someone. It had taken Laurie a long time figuring this one out. The first half of the term, he had explored the Labyrinth Gardens to his heart’s content. It had been a sad exploration, because that was something he used to do with Kitty, but it had entertained him nonetheless. On his endless walks he had found a little covered niche. It was the perfect place to meet with Kitty and Michael.
So, with careful planning, Laurie left a note inside Michael’s robes to meet him in the Labyrinth Gardens the next Saturday at 3 pm sharp. Laurie enclosed a detailed map of how to find their secret meeting place. In Kitty’s case, he borrowed a school owl to send her a letter with the same information as Michael’s.
The day of the Super Secret Meeting, the redhead was almost bouncing with excitement. However, he controlled himself. It would be weird for him to suddenly burst with happiness when he had been so gloom the last couple of months. Finally, he was happy to be back at school. He knew that he would need to be careful, because Preston could be snooping around, but he was willing to do it in order to spend time with his best friends in the world.
The Teppenpaw was anxious and excited at the same time. He could hardly contain his emotions. So, he decided to arrive early. At 2.30 pm he had already arrived at the meeting point with a basket full of food and beverages. He didn’t know how long they would stay there, but he was prepared for every eventuality. The extra time was doing nothing to calm his nerves. What if they didn’t want to talk to him ever again? That would be awful. Laurie was pacing around the small square of secluded land waiting for Kitty and Michael.
He heard something and a grin appeared on his face. “Thanks for coming!” he said and almost jumped to hug the first one of his friends that had arrived.

The first half of the year had been pretty awesome. But, there was a dark cloud that seemed to hang just over her shoulder and periodically it rained on her whenever she thought of her best friend. Kitty didn’t know what she’d done, but it must have been horrible to make Laurie hate her. He hadn’t talked to her even once all year and any time she tried to corner him and demand to know what his problem was he would vanish like the wind before she could catch hold of him.
For the first month she’d been furious. How could he just stop talking to her like that? It wasn’t fair! They were such good friends, what made him think he could just stop being her friend without so much as a single word of explanation? But, as the weeks dragged on and he continued to avoid her like the plague, Kitty just became sad. It hurt to lose Laurie, of everyone they were the most alike. Kitty fiercely wished to know what she’d done wrong so she could undo it and get her friend back. All her schemes and plans fell though and he still wasn’t talking to her.
Kitty was moping in the Library, listlessly reading her potions book vaguely trying to overcome her difficulty with the subject but finding no joy in the task, when one of the school owls flew in and landed on her shoulder. She gave a small laugh at the feathery creature as he pulled one of her ebony locks playfully as she itched his breast feathers. Finally finished giving the delightful creature attention she took the offered note with a softly whispered thanks.
Opening the letter, cornflower blue eyes scanned quickly over the familiar writing and she squealed with delight as she leapt from her chair and ran out of the Library, leaving her books behind in her excitement. Kitty was half way to the gardens before she finished reading the letter, nearly running into a few people along the way. “Awww not till Saturday?!” She whined when she actually got to the meeting time. The rest of the week seemed to pass in a thick goo that made every motion appear in agonizing slow motion. Time had become Laffy Taffy, stretching to unbearable lengths as it crawled by.
Finally the time of the meeting managed to escape the time warp that cloaked the school and Kitty dove into the gardens eagerly. She got turned around more than a few times, but finally she found Laurie. A large grin spread across his lips and hers flared to match as he jumped to his feet and held open his arms. Kitty flung herself into his hold and squeezed the life out of him in a bone crushing hug before shoving his chest and giving his shin a sharp kick. “Don’t ever not talk to me again!” She growled before wrapping her arms around him again. A brilliant smile curved her bow shaped lips, it felt like coming home.
“Sorry,” the redhead responded to Kitty’s statement. Her hug felt marvelous and the fact that she had come despite how he had acted for so long made his love for Kitty grow. She was a good person, and his family had no right to judge her because of her background. Laurie was sure that he had taken the right decision by asking her to come. “I am very very sorry.” His voice cracked a bit. He was on the verge of crying out of pain for the sharp kick to his shin and the fact that until now the real proportion of how much he had missed Kitty finally hit him.
His arms were around Kitty’s smaller frame again. The New Teppenpaw Beater had grown a lot during the semester, and he was quite proud to note that his arms went around her perfectly. “I swear I have an explanation.”
Laurie looked around Kitty to see if Micheal was coming, but the entrance to the small garden was empty. “Let’s sit down,” Laurie grabbed her hand and walked towards a bench that was surrounded by trees that gave them some shade.
The redhead didn’t know how to start this conversation because he didn’t want to insult his friend, but he wasn’t going to lie to her. What he wanted to do was a direct defy to his father. “Please don’t be mad at me. I missed you a lot.” His head was bend down, his green eyes were fixated on a grass. He was ashamed of his family and what they had made him do.
“My family….,” he took a deep breath. “erm….found out about your background…” he looked up to look at her face and gulped. “And they told me I couldn’t see you anymore because of it.”
“I was stupid and did what I was told, but I missed you too much.” Laurie hugged her again, “please forgive me.” The Teppenpaw decided to not mention Preston’s involvement in the matter, because he was Kitty’s team mate, and he didn’t want to cause a problem for her in the Aladren Quidditch team. Besides, he was ashamed of his cousin’s awful behavior by becoming the family’s tattle-tale. It was better this way.
When Michael had first landed at Sonora, Laurie had been the first person he'd spoken to. It had been like the friendliest possible Baptism of Fire into how different the world he was entering was from the one he'd left behind. Laurie knew nothing about the things that were everyday and familiar to Michael but he was so fascinated and so enthused at the idea of knowing about all of them. The two were roommates, so they'd had plenty of time together, to share knowledge, to get to know each other. To find out secrets. Laurie had found out about Michael's hearing impairment and hadn't turned his back. He was the first proper friend Michael had really made and he'd still wanted to be there even when he knew the whole truth.
Then, this year, something had changed. Even Michael wasn't paranoid enough to think Laurie had changed his mind about wanting to hang out with the deaf kid. It wasn't, as far as Michael knew, a problem here. No one had ever treated him like a pariah so there was no reason for Laurie to be embarrassed. He'd wondered whether it was because Laurie was too busy hanging out with Kitty but then he'd noticed her without him a fair amount of times. Eventually he had to conclude that Laurie just wasn't interested any more. Maybe the novelty of Muggle stuff had worn off. Maybe the book on aeroplanes Michael had given him had answered all the questions he could possibly have. Michael guessed that he and Kitty just weren't that interesting any more, although he felt like Laurie didn't need to be so rude about it as he was. He practically acted like Michael wasn't there.
Then, at the start of the week, a note had appeared in his pocket inviting him to a secret meeting. It was all very clandestine. Michael tried to make sense of this, to theorise as to what it might be. Maybe Laurie had a secret too. He remembered how he'd felt, thinking all his friends would reject him if they knew the truth. Maybe Laurie had been cutting himself off because he thought that whatever it was might make Michael not want to be his friend any more. He felt bad for not considering it before, though he also couldn't help but feel a little annoyed that Laurie would think that he wouldn't understand. But he'd decided to let him into his confidence now. Getting to that point took time, he should know that.
So, on the appointed day, he followed Laurie's map. And found him, taking Kitty's hand and walking with her to a bench, where the two sat tête a tête, obviously in some intimate conversation. Maybe his idea about Kitty had been right. Perhaps Laurie had been busy spending time with her and the big secret was nothing but telling Michael. Although that didn't make a lot of sense, and left a few things unexplained.
He coughed lightly to notify them of his arrival, feeling awfully like he was interrupting.
Kitty let Laurie lead her as she basked in the delight of having her friend back. Taking a seat she listened as he explained about his family. A small pout curved her bow shaped lips. “My background?” She asked. Why would his family care about her background? Her family was upper middle class, both her parents were still married, so what was the problem? Maybe it’s because we aren’t rich? the short Aladren mused as she waited for an answer. Kitty got the feeling that a lot of the Magic Kids were pretty well off, so maybe that was the problem. It seemed rather silly to her, but adults sometimes got weird ideas about things like that.
“Course I forgive you, just don’t be stupid like that again!” She murmured into his chest as she returned the hug. Laurie was her best friend, and he’d have to do a heck of a lot more than ignore her for a few months to make her abandon him! A soft cough caused Kitty to glance up and spot Michael. A slight blush brushed her freckled cheeks as she pulled away from the hug.
“Hi!” Kitty said as she put more space between her and Laurie, feeling embarrassed but not sure why. She’d spoken to Michael a time or two, but she wasn’t very close to the other boy and she wondered why he was here.
Laurie was extremely happy about Kitty forgiving him. Though he wasn’t sure she had understood about her background because she has asked him and honestly he didn’t want to answer that question. It would be awful of him to tell her that since she was a Muggleborn she was “beneath” him. He didn’t want to rude and forthcoming. Besides, now that she had forgiven him it was water under the bridge. The tricky part was going to convince her to keep their rekindled friendship a secret. He didn’t want to do it that way, but there was no other way for him to have his friend back and keep his family happy.
“I won’t” he exclaimed happily at how everything was turning out. Now the only thing that would make him completely happy was Michael appearing and forgiving him to, but he still hadn’t. Maybe he was mad at him for being such a crappy friend. Laurie knew he deserved it, but it still hurt.
However, to his surprise he heard a cough. Kitty moved away from him and his green-eyes met Michael’s form in the entrance of their secret spot. He had come!! He wasn’t too mad at him!
“Michael!” Laurie said excited as he jumped from his spot on the bench and ran towards his friend. The Teppenpaw hugged his friend, “I am so glad you came.” His smile was lightening up his face. He was really happy that his plan had worked out. Well, partially. He still needed to be forgiven by Michael and tell them about the need for secrecy. Laurie was sure his family wouldn’t do anything to them, but he was afraid of what they could do to him. His father was very strict when it came to direct orders.
The redhead began explaining about the circumstance of his odd and awful behavior. He didn’t mention Preston or mentioned the word Muggleborn. He told him what he had told Kitty. “I am sorry. I really am.” Laurie felt like the most awful boy on earth. He had ignored his two best friends just because his father had certain ideas he didn’t share, but it was his father who had told him. One had to respect their parents even when they disagreed with what they said, but Laurie was desperate to have his friends back. They had become a very important part of his life.
Michael was a little taken aback by Laurie's enthusiastic welcome. He wasn't sure they'd ever hugged before and, after months of the cold shoulder, it was a bit of a dramatic change in pace. Plus, the proximity of Laurie's arm to Michael's ear caused his hearing aid to whine with feedback. Around friends though, he didn't really care, so he just laughed and hugged Laurie back. The happiness faded from his expression, however, when Laurie explained what had been going on.
“Dude,” he managed. “That's... I mean... Whoa, gimme a minute here?” He understood what Laurie had said, what 'background' meant, but there was an awful lot to go through in his head before he would have some complete sentences about that. Although, the realisation quickly caught up that Laurie had asked him for something. “I mean, yeah, I totally forgive you. One hundred percent. Just the other stuff. I need to process for a minute.”
Michael had heard that some people felt less favourably towards non-Purebloods. No one at Sonora was in your face about it but there were some people who he noticed didn't go out of their way to mingle with everyone. Some would be curt but polite if you happened to catch yourself in conversation with them. There were some where he wouldn't really push even trying that. But it was never something that had directly affected him before. He was angry. Definitely, angry was one of the things he was feeling. But it wasn't towards anyone who was here. He was angry that Laurie was being pushed about by his family. He was probably angry that they didn't think much of him but he wasn't sure there was room for that right now. Maybe he'd be angry about that later when some of the other stuff had had time to sink in. It was just such a weird thought that someone could dislike him so much without even really knowing who he was. He knew Preston was a bit like that but he'd always figured that he and Laurie were just different. He hadn't realised that Laurie had somehow been disobeying his family. That was a pretty big deal. He wasn't sure what Pureblood discipline was like but he doubted it was an especially liberal process. And it wasn't just that Laurie was doing something they disliked. He was doing something that they had expressly forbade. If Michael did something like that, he reckoned he'd get grounded. He wasn't really sure as he never had done. But Purebloods seemed really old fashioned. Maybe they caned their children or something horrible. He didn't like the thought of Laurie being punished because of him.
“Don't get me wrong,” he began, “I'm grateful for the gesture – really grateful – and I do still want to be friends. But what happens to you if we are?”

Kitty slipped off the bench and followed Laurie. Michael was given a similar explanation as Kitty, and the short girl couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit happy that she wasn’t the only who’d been so painfully ignored. It was nice to know that whatever his parents had against her it wasn’t specifically her. The problem was shared by both her and Michael. Kitty frowned slightly as she studied the other boy. They weren’t friends, nor enemies, mostly they didn’t have much interaction with each other. That made trying to figure out what they had in common that Laurie’s family would hate more difficult to figure out.
Worry twisted unpleasantly in Kitty’s heart at Michael’s question. After Laurie explained and asked for forgiveness Kitty had been so very happy. She hadn’t thought about what it might mean that he was willing to go behind his family’s back and be friends anyway. Thinking like that was hard for the open girl. If her parents didn’t like one of her friends, they would be upset but they wouldn’t actually do anything to her if she stayed friends with them. After all, who her friends were was for Kitty to choose and Kitty alone. Her parents could help guide that choice, but in the end they would respect her ability to socialize with who she wanted.
From Michael’s tone, Kitty thought that maybe it would be different for Laurie. What would it mean for him to remain their friend? They already made him stay away for half the year, even though it made him miserable. What could cause her normally boisterous, honest friend to do that? “They wouldn’t…hurt you would they?” She asked seriously. Protectiveness snapped behind her sapphire eyes “Because if they do…” Kitty paused, trying to figure out what she could do if that was the case. “I’ll tell my mom!” A deep blush painted her cheeks at how childish that sounded, but her mom was a lawyer, she would be able to help, Kitty was sure of it.
Laurie’s smile faltered at Michael’s last question. It was a totally valid one, but the Teppenpaw had no answer to it. Well, one that could potentially help his friend feel comfortable about things. The truth was that he didn’t really know what his father was capable of doing to him if he disobeyed. Plus, Michael’s general reaction to what he had said was not the reaction Laurie had really pictured in his head. The redhead had this wild idea about his friends jumping up and down with him out of sheer happiness. He knew it was selfish of him to think that everything would be dandy after he had been so rude towards them, but he had been hopeful.
However, the reactions from his friends weren’t all that bad. Kitty had welcomed him right away, but Michael had a very valid question.
Kitty had suddenly appeared and was voicing the same concern as Michael. His green eyes looked from her to him a couple of time before sighing. How could he answer the question in a way that would ease his friend when he had no answer for it?
“I actually don’t know what would happen,” his mumbled to his feet. Laurie was somewhat embarrassed by this turn of events. “But I do know that it was hell ignoring you because my family is full of big headed bigots!” Laurie’s tone was full of anger and distaste for his family. It really pained him to see how they could reject his two best friends, especially because they were awesome and could match any pureblood.
Laurie smiled at Kitty’s anger and gave her a friendly pat on the back. “I am sorry about involving you in this.” He was selfish. He just didn’t want to be alone for the rest of his schooling career. “I was thinking that we could have a secret friendship until I know what will really happen.”
The Teppenpaw blushed, “I really missed you guys.”
Michael nodded at Laurie's assessment of the situation. He wasn't comfortable with putting his friend at any degree of risk but equally he didn't want to refuse to be his friend and make his life miserable, even if it was allegedly for Laurie's own good. He didn't understand how Laurie's family could try to make him give up his friends when it made him so unhappy. But if they were willing to make their own child miserable for the sake of their principles, he dreaded to think what they would do if he disobeyed.
“Ok. I don't really think anyone in our dorm would rat us out, do you?” he asked Laurie. He'd never really kept up with who was what blood type as it hadn't mattered before but the Teppenpaw lot seemed pretty chilled out. Then again, this sudden reaction from Laurie's family had blind-sided him. He guessed you didn't really know. “So, would we be safe enough to carry on as usual in there, or would that be likely to get back to your parents? And we'd need to think of some way outside of the dorm to hang out, especially for you and Kitty,” he added.
“Or me and Kitty could go away over the summer, learn how to bow properly and use the right fork, then come back next term posing as fancy exchange students from Europe,” he grinned, trying to lighten the mood a little.

Kitty gave Laurie another small swat at his apology. “You don’t have to apologize, in fact you should have involved me sooner!” she said sternly, but she couldn’t stop the smile that continued to tug at her lips. Kitty didn’t care if she got into trouble as long as Laurie was still her friend. We’ll be alright, no matter what! the young Aladren thought. Excitement touched her features, they would have to be careful, like spies!
Jealousy curled unhappily in Kitty’s chest at the reminder that she wasn’t in Laurie’s house and that Michael was. It would be easier for the two boys to maintain the secrete friendship that it was for her and Laurie. Oh well, it didn’t matter. What mattered was that Laurie was willing to try and so was Kitty. They’d make it work. “Well, we know the gardens pretty well, we can continue meeting in the hidden places where others won’t be as likely to look.” Kitty said, thinking out loud.
Meeting inside the school would be risky simply because anyone could notice them. Who knew who might be spying for Laurie’s family? A giggle escaped Kitty’s lips at Michael’s summer idea. Standing straight she gave a slightly wobbly curtsy. “How do you do Mister Grosvenor? The caviar is splendid this year wouldn’t you agree?” she coed in a fake heavy British accent.
Laurie was deep in thought at Michael’s question. Was the Teppenpaw dorm safe? He wasn’t really certain, because he had never thought about the blood issue within their house. “We can’t really be sure, but I think out roommates wouldn’t rat us out.” In fact, Laurie had gone on with his schooling career without worrying about such trivial matters. The fact that his two best friends were from very different backgrounds than him proved that Laurie didn’t care for prejudiced ideals. He was better than that, because he knew that there was something bigger and awesome than the purity of your blood. People were people and that was the only thing that really mattered.
The Teppenpaw was happy that Michael and Kitty were into his crazy idea of a secretive friendship. He would love if they eventually got to know one another and they three of them could become like Three Wizards, with the slight change of two boys and one girl. He couldn’t really ask for better friends than them. They were awesome. They had forgiven him for being a rude little spoiled brat! Not his fault, though.
The redhead laughed for the first time in a very long while at Michael’s suggestion and Kitty’s subsequent reaction. His friends were epically hilarious. “Okay, I think we can use the gardens to meet up after classes. If you want we can even work on our assignments here or just chill out.” The third-year said excitedly. This couldn´t get any better. Here they were being all goofy and happy. This is what life was about. Not stuffy things his family made him do. However, he knew he would need to be careful about everything, because Preston was always prowling, though he was sure that after so many months of solitude his cousin had lowered his guard about him. He really hoped so. Besides, Preston was too wrapped up in his studies and girlfriend to really care anymore about what he did.
Laurie had made sure that his cousin wouldn’t come on snooping on his epically, secret plans to reunite with his friends. “What do you think? We could even get like secret code names and stuff to make everything more fun!”
