"Okay, you may take off your uniforms if you wish, seeing as it's such a pleasant day," Sadi told her class once they'd assembled at the entrance to the labyrinth. "Now, as you will know, Runes as versatile; they can be made from any material, and serve hundreds of purposes. Before I've shown you rock carvings with Runes that prevent enemies from entering a place, and swords with runes engraved to increase their strength." As she spoke, Sadi was aware of a light breeze in the warm sunshine, and a songbird sending a merry tune from within the maze.
Collecting three small sticks from the ground at her feet (it looked like wonderful coincidence, but Sadi had in fact placed them there before the lesson began), Sadi held them up to form the rune Algiz. "You will see that runes can be easily made from natural materials. If this were laid along a boundary, you could expect increased protection," Sadi explained, though the concept wasn't a difficult one to grasp. "Similarly, you would expect a garden area decorated with Berkanan to have increased growth and long plant life."
Placing the sticks back on the floor still within their runic formation, Sadi divulged the lesson plan. "You have two tasks today; the first is to go into the gardens and see how many of these protections are already inplace. Once you start looking, you may be surprised at how many runes you have previously not noticed within the school grounds. Your second task is to make your own natural runes, like the one I just showed you. Think about what would be appropriate, but be creative." Assemblies created by students so young were hardly likely to have any lasting effect, but it was good practise, nonetheless.
"You may work in pairs or groups if you like. If you have any questions simply come back here; I will be waiting. Good luck!"
