Not so aimless wanderings (Tag: Stephen)
by Tyranthia Boyd
It had been one of those Saturday mornings which make you wish you had stayed in bed. True, she had slept half of it away (well, until 10:30), but the waking part of it had not been near as pleasant. Not that she was surprised… mornings just weren’t her best time. But there was a point at which it was called ‘too much’. She had crossed that point a considerable time ago.
In the space of three hours, she had managed to twist her ankle, bruise her shin, jam her side against the corner of a dresser, achieve a great gash across her arm (which admittedly looked kind of cool, as she hadn’t bothered with a band-aid), stub her toe, and slam a door on her left thumb. It really wasn’t her day.
But as she had a death wish, she decided to risk a search to find Stephen. She had acquired 6 excellent photos of him the previous year, and had made copies when she developed them over the summer, thinking that he might like to have him. If somebody was not familiar with her and her hobby (or rather obsession), they would think that she was a stalker or something. Pretty much everybody at Sonora however was well aware that she took pictures of everything she could, and it was fairly evident that she considered herself a photographer. Half of her summer was spent in her dark room in the basement.
And Stephen was an obvious choice as a subject. He was always doing something interesting, and didn’t mind being in front of the camera. Not to mention that he probably wouldn’t think her weird for showing him pictures that she had taken of him (it wasn’t as if he hadn’t known when she was taking photographing him the previous year).
Clutching a handful of photographs and her camera (unnecessarily since it was hanging around her neck), her search brought her to the Gardens. It was a logical place for him to be on a Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, it was horribly hot, and the fact that she was wearing jeans (which were full of holes) and a khaki coloured t-shirt really didn’t help.
As she rounded a corner, she found him. In fact, she crashed into him.
This really wasn’t her day. \n\n

Super spy! Well... considering spy guy... Other Super Spy!!!
by Stephen Baxter
OOC: I'm writing a little for Sorrel, Ash and Zack here... so any objections let me know and it can be altered. BIC
Fixing up the fort was hard but satisfying work, even with a wand and a smart little guy like Zack to help out. And this fort was by far the most ambitious that Stephen had ever attempted - he didn't think it would have been at all possible if he'd only had his brother and his buddies from back hom helping out. Magic, was definitely a useful skill.
His stomach had been rumbling vaguely for the last half hour or so, and Stephen had decided that it was time to go get some food from the hall. Giving the others a heads up about the plan, he had also said it might be best if they split up on the way back so as to not give the girls a heads up on where they were... or what they were doing.
The trip back had been fun. Putting aside the need for food for the moment, Stephen had gone all out in being as devious to people trying to track him as possible. He backtracked, plunged through hedges, splashed through a couple of fountains to put them off his scent (and it was refreshingly cool too, considering it was still rather hot around the building) and at one stage climbed a tree, edging along a branch and jumping into another before climbing back down.
No one would ever be able to accuse him of giving away their secret location.
As he neared the edge of the gardens, the need for secrecy lost its urgency, and Stephen upon stumbling across a path, took to it instead, and started to jog around the corner- which was where he met up with his old friend Ty and his other friend, her camera. The collision wasn't so bad really; she might have gotten a little wet from the contact with his still damp jeans, but he managed to recover quickly and stop the two of them from ending up on the ground.
In doing so, he grabbed her wrist, and his attention was instantly captured by what she was holding. Not the camera. The pictures. Of him.
"Hey Ty," he grinned, as he snatched the pictures out of her grip. "These look pretty good. I think Kneezles really suit me," he flipped through the others and his grin widened. The shots seemed to have been taken of all the good times... Ty apparently was around far more often than he had realised. He didn't mind in the least though - it was just a pity she couldn't get a shot of the Corridor Ride. Now that would be a photo worth seeing.\n\n

Wet… what had Stephen been doing? On a second thought, she possibly didn’t want to know. Regaining her balance, she watched him flip through the pictures. “I was looking for you- I um, I figured you’d want to have a cop-copy of the better ones”, she explained. She looked down awkwardly at the ground, shifting uncomfortably. Her lack of any social life for quite some time had taken its toll, and her communication skills had gone about six feet under.
Not that she needed friends. Of course she didn’t need friends. What good did friends do? She had seen enough of society back at home to determine that she didn’t need them They backstabbed you and really didn’t care about you, and worst of all, they forgot you. She didn’t need that… she could take care of herself.
But Randolf 7 was her friend. Snobby, stuck-up, arrogant, self-centered, sarcastic, heir to the Boyd estate Randolf was her friend, in some odd sort of way. How on earth did that work out? No, friends just made life ridiculously complicated. He wasn’t her friend, he was her acquaintance. Or something like that. She couldn’t figure it out; she couldn’t figure it out at all.
Because, although she wouldn’t admit it to herself, she was lonely. She had Fiyero, and she had her photography. She was enough of an introvert that she could get along, but it really wasn’t enough. Maybe some part of her recognised this however, and it would explain why she was sometimes so irritated when friends would walk past, laughing. And cynical.
“Are you heading back to Cascade Hall?” she asked. She wasn’t sure whether she should continue her planned route of heading back or make an excuse and go in the opposite direction if he was. Stephen was interesting and nice, but the thought of social interaction bothered her these days.

"Yeah, thanks," Stephen said still flipping throught the photos. He looked up and laughed, "these'll be brilliant to take home and show Alan and my folks. 'Specially this one," he pulled the photo of his save in the Quidditch game last year. "This one is really cool." He watched himself stretch to far and start to fall of his broom, only grabbing hold again at the last moment. Now that had been fun. He hoped Quidditch this year would be just as fun.
His stomach rumbled quietly again, and right on cue Ty spoke up. “Are you heading back to Cascade Hall?”
"Yeah," Stephen said, slipping the photos into a pocket for safekeeping. "It's about lunch time I reckon." He slung an arm around her shoulder and started moving towards the school. "So Ty, I haven't seen you around much. How's the photography going?"\n\n

Well, so much for having an option. Ty stiffened as she felt the arm around her, biting her lip in order to suppress the impulse to pull away. It was unfamiliar contact; she couldn’t even remember the last time she had been hugged. It had been when she was little she supposed. But her family just wasn’t touchy feely, and it felt… weird. Not to mention that it upset her normal perfect posture. Although this wasn’t a bad thing… perfect posture was one of those pureblooded habits she was trying to break just to bother Mother.
But even Father, whom she was so unlike and yet so alike, she couldn’t remember the last time she had hugged him. They just weren’t like that, and they didn’t need to be. They understood each other. He was an artist, he didn’t like the social functions any more than she did, or socialising in general. They could spend hours together, her working on her photography and he working on his painting, or sketching, not saying a word. Just working in companionable silence. They were the closest in her family, because while they were so different in personality, they shared one important aspect; being different. Not like social, prim, proper mother and older sister Kelyla, very nearly a clone of her mother.
His question… right, he had asked a question… “I dunno, alright… I’ve been thinking about submitting a few to magazines or something…” She trailed off. “Spent a lot of my summer in the darkroom developing and making prints actually. Father turned it into a kind of studio for me during the summer, even with a table and chairs and stuff so the house elf could bring food down. Mother wasn’t too happy, but she compromised by saying that I could spend as much time down there as I wanted if I ate dinners with the family and went to all the social functions. So now I’ve got the whole basement to myself… my father was even talking about fixing up one of the rooms to be my bedroom.”
She was slightly shocked to hear herself talking so much. It was probably because she’d been fairly deprived of social communication for so long…even during the summer, she more or less had only had complete conversations with a few, slightly tolerable people at the parties. It wasn’t as if Father would talk… on the rare occasion that his wife tried to engage him in the gossip at the table which included herself and Kelyla, he would usually push his oversized glasses up his nose, cough politely, and mutter a few barely coherent words. \n\n
It is if you're pretending to be a librarian

"You have rooms in your basement?" Stephen asked, trying to work out just how big the house would have to be for the basement to be divided into separate rooms. "Seriously?"
The thought had him quite distracted for a while, and he walked along in silence, directing them both towards the hall and the smell of food which was making its way to where they were, drawing him on.
"That's cool," he summised eventually, before going back to the other things she had mentioned. "What kind of magazines? I didn't know they took photos from kids our age - you must be really good." With a sudden remembrance he tapped his free hand against the pocket he had stashed the photos in and grinned. "What am I saying? Of course you're good! Were you thinking of submitting one of the photos of me?" he asked in all seriousness.\n\n

Upon the question of rooms in her basement, Ty nodded, frowning slightly. Basement… if you had a basement, it would be divided into rooms wouldn’t it? The question of having a basement or not would depend on the climate and ground stability of course, location, geography… of course, the fact that not everybody had a large house didn’t even register with her.
“… You must be really good.”
Ty could feel herself turn slightly red, feeling in a bit of an awkward position. True, she knew she was good, and had no qualms about mocking or being critical of other people’s photography, because she could. She was often as good as them, if not better. But actually coming out and saying it would be an awful lot like bragging.
"What am I saying? Of course you're good!
Ty turned even redder, and was thankful that Stephen wasn’t actually looking at her face. As unused to the sensation of, well, physical contact in any form, she was unused to compliments and didn’t take them very well. Father didn’t compliment her photography, nor did she compliment his painting. It was a mutual understand and respect that the other was talented at the art, and this in itself was more flattering to Ty than if he had complimented her. He was proud, but he didn’t have to tell her about it, it was a fact. Luckily, before she could stammer out a vague ‘thank you’, Stephen continued.
“Were you thinking of submitting one of the photos of me?"
Ty considered this. “It’d depend on the magazine of course… if I find the right one, I might. I got some pretty good ones. You wouldn’t mind would you?” It was a question primarily for the purpose of formality. Even Ty, as isolated as she had been, knew that Stephen minding would be like the prairie elves suddenly starting a revolution. “I’d split any money I got for it with you, and I’d give you a copy of the magazine”, she added helpfully. \n\n
I haven't quite figured that part out yet...

"Nah," Stephen said with a laugh, "I don't mind." He pulled away suddenly and struck a pose. "Just say the word." He held it half a second more, then grinning all the while moved back over and drapped his arm around her shoulders again.
He wasn't worried about getting money - it had never really meant much to him - but a copy of the magazine was definitely something that caught his interest. "But that magazine had better be a signed copy," he teased as he set them to walking on again, "or I might change my mind."
Ty was pretty fun to talk to. He looked around, but didn't spot that squirrel that Ash had mentioned she usually had somewhere around and shrugged - the movement a little off balance with one of his arms occupied. It'd be cool to have a pet squirrel, he thought. You could get it to help you find the best nuts, and you could play chase in the trees and you could teach it to throw things at people. He almost laughed again a the very thought as they approached the doors into the cascade hall.
"So Ty, what's on the menu today?" Stephen asked as they entered.
OOC: Into the Hall?\n\n
