Mia laid on her back on a bench near the entrance to Pecari Common Room. She kept her eyes closed as she stroked her cat that slept on her stomach. The oncoming summer sun beat down on her tan skin and she found it very relaxing to lay there. School would be ending very soon and she was taking the time to think about why she was half excited and half dreading it.
Summer meant no classes for two months and getting to see her friends. But summer also meant being back home where everyone was yelling and arguing and fighting. Mia really didn’t want to be back with that. Sonora was a godsend. Even though she got into a few tangles with some students here or there, it was nothing compared to home.
Mia really wanted to see her friends again too. She wasn’t sure if she was allowed or not but she had told them about Sonora and made them swear not to tell anyone. She knew her friends would never tell. They couldn’t wait for her to show them magic when she got back. Mia had made (and lost) some friends here but she knew it was just part of the experience which she wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.
Also, Mia didn’t want to be away from all the magic she had become accustomed to over the ten months or so of being at school. Magic was the greatest thing to ever happen to her.
Mia kept her eyes closed but smiled at the thought; her cat meowed loudly before recurling itself on her master’s stomach.
Sally meandered through the hedges of the labyrinth, thinking of all that had happened over the year. She had learned of a feud that could potentially rise to much more, she had lost a few friends, but, above all else, she believed she had grown up, in a way. She no longer spoke without thinking, or was so hot-tempered. At least, she tried not to be. In fact, during her last few months, she had become quite quiet, prefering to watch rather than participate. And it had taught her a great deal. However, there were still tiems where she wished she was still like her old self, particularly during that conversation with Elizabeth.
And she also wished that the school year didn;t have to end. Her family wouldn't understand her anymore, not really. Her life was just too different, and they would have to deal with that, because she couldn't change back now.
Lost in her thoughts, she tripped over a branch lying on the floor, and fell flat on her stomach. Pushing herself up, she saw Mia lying on a bench, and winced. "I feel graceful now," she joked, and then settled herself down on a bench across from the other girl. "So, Mia, what are you doing over the summer? YOu ready to go back to the muggle world?"\n\n
Mia's eyes shot open as she heard a thump near her. She sat up and her cat clawed at her top a bit but was still dislodged from the sudden movement. Mia caught Sally as she was getting up after a more than likely ungraceful fall.
"Hardly." Mia answered with a small laugh to Sally's question of if she was ready to go back to the muggle world. "I rather like all this magic business and I'll miss it over the summer. I think Silk will too. I swear, she's can't be an ordinary cat." Silk had leaped off the bench and headed over to Sally, obviously a bit miffed from being woken up by its master and seeing another familiar face.
"I don't really have any real plans for the summer but I am going to go see my friends back in Jersey. We'll probably end up at the beach a lot. I only live an hour or so from the coast. I'm definitely spending a lot of time away from the house." Mia ended with a roll of her eyes.
"So what about? Have any plans once we get back to the muggle side." she asked with a lopsided grin as she leaned back on the bench.\n\n
Sally leaned back against a hedge, and thought. SHe really had no idea what was going to happen over hte summer. "Well, seeing your friends should be fun. I think I'm probably just going to laze for a while, and stuff. My friends basically told me I was a snob when I left to come here, because I was leaving everything without really telling where I was going, and so I probably won't hang out with my brothers alot. Go relearn how to play football, and all."
SHe sat, lost in thought about everything, and then asked, quietly, "So, Mia, what sticks out about this year? Anything you might want to do differently next year, or such? Any regrets?"\n\n
I won't forget this any time soon, that's for sure.

Mia couldn't quite understand Sally's friend's reactions to her coming to Sonora. Telling her she was a snob for coming? Mia thought that was stupid of them. Mia was glad for her friends. They weren't jealous or anything. They were happy for her and excited to see her again just like she was excited to see them. Mia thought Sally should meet her friends sometime.
Her eyes caught on to Silk who was now racing back and forth between herself and Sally. She jumped onto the bench where Mia was laying and then sprung off and did a little tumble by Sally before racing back to repeat the actions. Mia sat up and watched Silk in the moment of silence between the girls while Sally seemed to be thinking. Then she asked another set of questions.
Mia stopped watching Silk and sat Indian style on the bench. She looked at her lap and thought about the question.
"Well, just about everything sticks out because basically everything I did had magic involved and I'm still grasping the fact that I'm a witch." Mia answered quietly but playfully. She knew what Sally meant but didn't want to pile up on the solemness quite yet.
"Oh!” she exclaimed suddenly. “You know what really sticks out? How different the people are here. Everyone seems to be from somewhere else in the country with some different background and everyone has a different personality y’know? But we're all being put into the same space." Mia said with a laugh. "Like, why in the world are they putting me and Sorrel Craven in the same dorm room? I'm just about ready to kill her."
Mia laughed and leaned back on the bench. She decided she might as well give Sally a straight answer now. She had her jokes. She sighed and became a bit more serious with what she regretted.
"Regrets?" Mia started slowly, her smile still slightly there but slowly fading. "Well, I regret two certain conversations I had with Elizabeth. Ever since the last one, she started acting differently, I know, but I haven’t really spoken to her since. I just keep thinking if I had said something different, or if I had acted differently, maybe she wouldn’t have turned into-” Mia stopped to think of what her ‘friend’ had become. “-whatever she is now.”
Mia’s smile was very faint by the time she finished. She just realized she hadn’t used her personalized bright smile in quite sometime. All of her friends knew it but maybe not the people of Sonora but there was just a certain way that Mia smiled that was all her own. It was her bright smile but it hadn’t been out in a while. Not since the whole incident with Elizabeth.
It wasn’t like she had become so attached, and she definitely regretted telling Elizabeth so much during one moment of weakness, but it was still like something wasn’t right now that they were practically enemies. Mia shook the thought and turned her head to look at Sally who looked sideways now.
“Have you spoken to her since she went all maniac on us?” Mia asked as she scritched Silk's ear before the cat ran back over to Sally. \n\n

Sally thought about her last conversation with Elizabeth as Silk raced over to her. She remembered the cat well from their adventure earlier in the year, and began petting her absentmindly.
"Well, I talked to her in the library a couple months ago. I was just doing some random reading, and found a book about the muggleborn/pureblood problem. I decided to take a look, and she came over while I was reading. SHe got all snooty about it, but then she started on about all the things she's lost, and I felt really sorry for her. She hasn't had an easy life, not really. Maybe acting like she is is the only way for her to cope, or something. I know that's how it use to be for me."
She didn't elaborate, and wouldn't unless she was asked. It wasn't a good subject, nor a pleasant one. So she sat there, petting silk and waiting for Mia to ask another question, or just sit here in silence. \n\n
Mia sat up and turned to let her legs dangle from the bench. She listened to what Sally said. She got a bit annoyed at how Elizabeth acted to Sally. Mia had seen Elizabeth around, walking all high and mighty and she was beyond sick of it. She had truly become disgusted by the girl since she turned but Mia had time to cool down so she wasn't as upset as she was the night she spoke to Elizabeth in their dorm. She wasn't completely disgusted by the girl anymore but the two definitely weren't on speaking terms. She didn’t think they ever would be again.
"Yeah, that sounds like what Sorrel had said to me.” Mia said absentmindedly but then realized Sally wouldn’t know what she was talking about. “We spoke a bit afterwards because she had walked in right after Elizabeth left the dorm room after our chat. Not so much fun." Mia said and wiggled her foot a bit to get her cat's attention. Silk obliged and ran over to rub her head against Mia's shoe. There was a minute of silence before Mia continued.
"You had to deal with this kind of thing before?" Mia asked in a casual calm so it didn't make it seem like she was forcing the issue of what ever Sally had meant.
That never helped if you wanted to know something. It wasn't that she was nosy but she did this a lot at home when her friends really needed to get something off their chests but wouldn't come out and say it. Mia was all for listening but she never wanted to burden people with how she was feeling. It just wasn’t what she did. She would take on others’ problems but also kept her own problems to deal with. Like how terrible it was for her at home. Only one person at Sonora knew about that and she swore to never let herself slip like that ever again.
But usually, it helped to get things off your chest to someone who would listen and that's what Mia was good at. Listening. \n\n
