Performing Arts Club! by Rosalynn Tellerman
Rosalynn smiled at the gathered group of performers before her in the MARS dance room. (She usually tried to book the music room first as it had a wider range of activities associated with it, but that also meant it was a more popular room and therefore was harder to find open in the time-slot she wanted it, and this year she’d had to go with the dance room. Either way, it always looked like an auditorium with a large stage, and the group was currently assembled onstage with the scenery behind them befitting a performance of Swan Lake.)Some of those assembled were people who had been in the club last year and/or the year before. Others were students presumably drawn in by her posters in each common room, or by friends, or maybe even because they’d learned the thrill of performance in the last concert or second challenge.
“Hello, everyone! For everyone who is new to the performing arts club, welcome! I’m Rosalynn Tellerman, the president and founder, and I’m excited to have you join us! For everyone returning, welcome back and congratulations on your concert performances last year! I heard a lot of really great things!”
“This year, the midsummer even is the bonfire, so not quite as well suited to our club as the concert obviously was last year, but I think we can still lead in some campfire songs, maybe play out a ghost story, or perhaps just do little skits to keep people from getting bored. If the staff announce a theme later, we can definitely try to incorporate that into anything we do. I was also thinking we could do some caroling in December this year, but we can wait to organize that a little later.”
She smiled around the group, “What I do like to do for our first meeting is go around the stage and have everyone introduce themselves and say what kind of performances they like to do, so we can make sure everyone gets a chance to do what they most enjoy doing. Every meeting usually has a theme - dance, chorus, puppetry, juggling, orchestra, etc, where we all have a little lesson about it, and then you get to try out that particular form, so if you want yours on the schedule make sure you bring it up. I’ll be taking notes! Once I have the schedule, I’ll post it in the Cascade Hall so you can make sure you attend the days we’re doing something that sound fun to you, or you can skip the ones you’re not interested in.”
“As I mentioned, we also try to do some kind of performance at the midsummer event to show off our talents - of which we have many! - so some meetings will instead be rehearsals for that, especially in the spring term. Are there any questions so far?”
Once all questions were asked and answers given to the best of her ability, she kicked off the introductions. “Okay, so, introduction time! I’m Rosalynn Tellerman, a sixth year in Aladren. My family is really into performing arts; my mom is a dancer and my earliest memories are in the dance studio where she teaches. I love dancing! I also play the banjo and the fiddle, like my dad, and since he is also a professional stage magician, I am have a lot of fun learning how to do slight of hand magic tricks!”
She looked to her right and smile encouragingly. “Do you want to go next?”
