Beginner's Charms - Working on coordination.
by Grayson Wright
The Beginner's class was approaching the point of reasonable competency, which was always an interesting time. They were getting some confidence, some skill - and sometimes, therefore, have more interesting accidents. Professor Wright was grateful for junk shops; it was, of course, possible to repair all the footed teacups and sugar bowls that might hit the floor today, but if enough students struggled with that particular spell...well, he only had so much time in a day, and the number of things to do sometimes caught up with him, as it had started to feel like it did more often lately.
"Hello everyone," he greeted the Beginners. "Hopefully you'll have some fun with what we're going to work on today. Everyone pick a vessel and get settled, please...."
Once they had more or less followed instructions, with a pointed look for any who tarried too much on the second half, he began. "You've all mastered most of the basic charms of motion," he reminded them. "Which are essential material, so well-done. A lot of what you work on from here will involve elements of them, so make sure to keep in practice. Today, you're going to try your hands at making multiple parts of the same object move at once, which is why all your teacups and sugar bowls there have four feet. You're going to make them dance. The incantation's motus polypedium. Anyone recognize the part of the word that will help animate all the feet at once?" He nodded when he got a correct answer. "Very good. Now, the trick is not just to get them moving, but to get them to move in a coordinated enough way to move the object. By exam time, I hope you'll all be able to make an object perform something recognizable as a dance. For today, just start getting them moving at once, and as always, don't be discouraged if it takes a while, or expect that it means later stages will be equally easy if you pick this one up faster. Anyone who stands up, make sure you watch your feet if people start getting these things mobile enough to fall off the desks," he added to cover the base more than because he thought they really would.
