Perfectly ordinary ball preperations [Ray] by Billy Cobb

Billy stood by the 'pond' that was buried deep in the labyrinth. He'd found it while exploring last year sometime, he didn't really remember when. It wasn't quite like any pond around home since it's edges were nice shaped blocks and there was a small one of them fountains of water in the middle of it. But it was irregularly shaped, the bottom was mud and there was plenty of grass and reeds growing in clumps at places around the edges in it. It also had some fish and other critters about it.

He'd taken off the long black 'not-terribly' fancy dress robe that he was going to be wearing to the ball. Ray had bought it, which he wasn't entirely sure what he thought about, but it was for a good cause. He'd also taken off his shoes and socks and rolled up his pant legs. The plan wasn't to come here for water, grass, reeds or fish. Billy stepped into the water and began searching for frogs. As many frogs as he could find, catch and store in his nice long robe and Ray's pockets and purse. This was gunna be a fun ball.

Billy turned at the sound of someone approaching. There should be only one other person out this way right now... unless the groundskeeper was skulking about. He grinned as he saw Ray come into view. "Hi! Are you ready for this?"

OOC: I got approval from the Groundskeeper for there to be a pond somewhere out of the way in the gardens.

Absolutely normal. by Reighleigh Mae Thorn

Ray was wearing her dress already because that was the only way to properly get the frogs into her pockets and purse. Her converse were on over fishnet style stockings that decorated her legs, visible under her mid-thigh length poofy black dress. The top of the dress was Gothic-style corset, although it wasn't a real one so it didn't do much in the figure department; Ray still looked very much like a twelve-year-old. Her signature crown was in place, her purse was strung across her body, and her arms were wrapped around her. It was probably just cold because she didn't have a coat, right? There couldn't possibly be any nerves going on right now. Billy's greeting didn't help make her feel any more ready than before so she just grinned at him, not kicking her shoes off to help since she probably wouldn't be much help at frog catching anyway and also because, again, she was cold.

"I hope you're a better frog catcher than you are a spellcaster, Cobb," she taunted. Hesitation crept into her expression though. "We're not going to totally ruin this thing, right?" she asked. Her pranks were usually limited to things that reminded everyone how cool she was and they'd taken a sharp decline into dangerous territory since her friendship with Billy had taken off. She actually did stuff just because it was fun now and cared significantly less about her reputation. In fact, she cared so little about her reputation now that she almost, not quite but almost, just wanted to go to the Ball with her friend and enjoy it. They could make fun of people behind cups of punch and maybe do something totally lame like dance or something.

Yes, nothing out of the ordinary here. by Billy Cobb

Billy couldn't help but respond to such a dig. "I'll have you know," he said in his best 'high-falootin' voice, "That I am the bestest frog catcher you'll find back home, and possibly the best spellcaster as well. You can ask Iris about that first part, but not the second." He gave Ray a wink to go with the grin. She looked a little chilly in her super-Ray type dress, so he nodded to where he'd put his robe. "If yer a little chilly, you can put that on." It would probably be a bit long for her, but would keep some of the evening air away.

Ray's question caught him a little off guard. She looked a little unsure about the plan as well. No, not the plan itself, the results of it. He had some misgivings about the plan, if you wanted to call them that. Frogs were generally noisy and moved a lot when captured, so unless they could stun, silence, petrify, or whatever else all of them he wasn't entire sure how they were going to get them inside undetected. Naturally he'd figured they'd work that out when the time came, after all these must be magical wizard frogs, maybe they behaved nicely if you caught them. He'd seen stranger things in classes.

That weren't what Ray was talkin' about though. At least he didn't think so. Billy waded towards her to the edge of the pond. "I don't think so?" He responded in his own mildly uncertain tone. "That hadn't been the plan, just somethin' to liven things up a bit if it got dull an' boring, right?" Then it struck him, it was like a bolt of lighting hitting him and everything made sense. He grinned again full force and waggled his eyebrows at her. "Did'ja have somethin' else in mind for tonight?" Now he was curious, what other sort of nefarious plan had she come up with?

Excuse you, I'm extraordinary. by Reighleigh Mae Thorn

Ray was going to make a snarky comment about how being the best frog catcher in Billy's hometown, population: Billy and Iris, wasn't exactly a great way to bump up his reputation, when he offered his coat to her. She teetered for a moment, physically shifting her weight before returning to a neutral stance, her uncertainty winning out for a moment.

"It doesn't smell like butt?" she asked, hoping to give her awkwardness an excuse and also take advantage of the recently missed chance to be sarcastic. She crossed to where the coat was laying and draped it around herself, but didn't put her arms in; being a literal penguin was very out of vogue. She returned to the edge of the pond as Billy approached her, his legs hilariously pale in the evening pond water with his dark pants rolled up.

Just liven things up if things got dull and boring. A game plan for when conversation with her became too dreadful to bear? No, that was silly. And she wouldn't care anyway. She didn't need anyone to like her. Even her only best friend. He thought she was planning something else and she smiled, a false mischievousness easier to pull than any other expression she had.

"I was just thinking like . . . what if we just went and acted totally normal?" she smirked. "Everyone knows us at this point, they have to guess we're planning something. What if we just go, maybe do something totally lame like dance a couple songs or something, I don't know," Yep definitely not pausing there or feeling weird or anything. "Maybe talk a little too loud about our 'scheme' and then they just get to go all night wondering and waiting for something to happen." The probability of everyone paying that much attention to them was actually pretty slim, she thought. Which was even better. No it wasn't. It's fine. She raised an eyebrow at him. "Unless you don't think you can act that good?"

Okay, fair point. by Billy Cobb

Ray did have a nefarious scheme in mind. She was a devious one. Billy gave her new plan a good thinkin' over, considering it very carefully. Roughly two and a half seconds later he responded with his best, nice, polite smile. "I'll have you know, I can be a perfect gentlemanly sort iff'n I want to." He climbed up out of the 'pond' and offered his arm to her in something almost close to resembling the proper way of doing it. "Yer right though, that'll confound 'em the whole night. Dancin' may not even be all that bad." He suggested with a cavalier tone that she could take whichever way she wanted to.

Dancing with Ray actually sounded kinda fun. His smile broadened unconsciously at the thought. Girls were kinda neat, but most of them were... well, really girly, or scary. Ray wasn't, she was fun and got him better than most of the rest of the kids around the school. He didn't really know why she hung out with him, but coming up with mischief seemed to encourage her to do so, so he didn't mind. That is what made this plan of hers so fantastic in his mind, they got to hang out (really close together) and cause mischief without actually doing anything to get themselves into actual trouble. Iris was always nagging him about not getting into trouble.

The other thing that suddenly occurred to him was that he'd finally be getting to go home again! That as great, but it also meant he wouldn't see Ray again for a while until they got back to school again. It was weird to think of looking forward to coming back to school. But next year they'd be in the same classes again! But, first things first.

"So, we all ready to go then my Dark Princess?" He grinned and winked at her. Iris may have eventually learned that despite the tiara, Ray wasn't an actual princess, but he still like to think of her as such. She sure was pretty enough to be one.

No, wait, what? by Reighleigh Mae Thorn

"Pants, socks, shoes," Ray instructed her date. "And your coat," she added, making sure he was properly presentable before accepting his arm. It was one of the first times she'd really touched another magical person who wasn't her own father for more than the short punches she and Billy normally threw her own way and she would've sworn there was a small bolt of electricity that passed between the two of them as their arms lingered together.

They made their way together to where the Ball had already begun (whoops) and they slipped in as the prefects were getting applause, probably for doing something weird and lame. Ray looked around, feeling as if she'd maybe swallowed the frogs they'd planned to catch.

"My mom would love that I'm here," she said tightly, wanting very much to burn it all down. The fancy lights, the fancy people, the fancy way everyone talked and moved and ate. It was the perfect place to mingle with high society. Nothing but her black dress and her date of choice could've made it unappealing to her mother and Ray was suddenly very glad for both of those choices. "Alright," she said, turning her eyes to Billy instead of the room around them. "You said you can dance? With a partner at that?" she confirmed with a smirk.

The idea of dancing with him was actually not one she'd thought through too much because, in examining the other students who were taking to the floor, there seemed to be a mixed bag of awkwardly dancing near each other and dancing a full out ballroom type thing in each other's arms. She was a bit curious whether she'd given off a properly threatening aura long enough to ensure the latter didn't happen, or whether Billy had safely managed to get enough inside her walls that it might not be totally weird. Whatever. He could decide.
