"I still don' see what so impor'ant 'bout yer young'uns goin' off ta do fancy schoolin' so much." Billy listened to the same argument from Uncle Lloyd that he'd heard numerous times already. Pa naturally wasn't allowed to explain, at least according to that Mr. Luceno fellow that had told them all about the school and magic and stuff. Apparently there were big laws against it or something.
"I explained it to y'all already," Pa attempted to reply. It was the same story they'd come up with, but it just didn't seem to be doing the trick so well any more. "We don't got any choice, the government man said…"
"Since when did you start lis'nin' to them government fellows?" Interrupted Uncle Lloyd. "They didn't seem ta care 'about that still o' yers out back. Why you letten' them take yer kids from you? 'Specially when there's work ta be done 'round here. My Tommy and the other boys gotta work extra 'cause yer Billy ain't here." Billy thought about the various jynxes he'd learned and what they'd do to Uncle Lloyd. It'd be easy enough to hit him with one from his normal hiding spot under the house. Unfortunately, Ma had taken the 'no magic' rule seriously and hidden his wand till school started again. It was almost as if she didn't trust him.
"Look here Lloyd," Pa retorted, "I know it ain't ideal, an' I don't like it any more than you do, but we ain't got a choice in the matter. Heaven knows Virginia don' like her little Iris bein' gone so much either." Billy rolled his eyes in his hiding spot under the men's feet. "But there ain't nothing we can do about it." It sounded like Uncle Lloyd was starting to really get Pa riled up.
"Yea, well, you just keep that boy of yers spouting whatever nonsense he's pickin' up while he ain't here." Uncle Lloyd seemed to be retreating just a bit. Billy tried to think if he'd said much about school stuff to anyone. He wasn't supposed to, but sometimes stuff slipped out. He was careful though. He called his totally different, non-flying game Ridditch when he tried to teach it to his cousins. But it wasn't quite the same without the magic bits as the remarkably similar game, Quidditch.
"Also, my boy says he found somethin' while runnin' about with Billy. But yet boy took it from him and ran off." Uncle Lloyd accused. "I assume that you'll have words with him and get that back ta Tommy." It didn't sound like a question. Billy fingered that object with a smile. Fat chance he thought to himself.
"I'll talk to him." Pa assured Uncle Lloyd. Billy just looked at the dirt covered metal disk that he had taken from Tommy when they'd been off close to the 'forbidden area'. The never visited area on the mountain so dubbed after he'd been attacked by a vicious bear there a few years ago. The disk was old, worn, and glinted of gold under the dirt. But, he was fairly sure it was one of them Galleons that the wizard folk used. If it was, by that law, Tommy couldn't have it.
