Although she had been able to practise a little over the holidays, Jade didn't really own a broomstick as such. They kept a few in the broomshed in their yard, but all of them were older than Jade, and none of them behaved especially well. This helped in some ways, because it kept her on her toes (so to speak - toes didn't really come into flying all that much) and developed a skill of being able to work with even the most temperamental broom. On the other hand, she couldn't really get much speed going on an old broom - even the worst school broomsticks were better than the Owens' collection.
It was essential that Jade got in some good practise. Amira was ill, or something, and so the first year had been bumped up to starting Seeker for the time being. She wasn't sure whether she would be playing in the first game for Pecari, but if she was, then she wasn't going out there looking like an idiot. She was going to play hard, and win. That was all there was to it. She didn't even know anything about the other team's Seekers, but from what she'd witnessed in the game before midterm, she was going to need to be able to fly fast and maneouvre well to outstrip those Bludgers.
So as soon as she'd found a spare second after returning to school, jade went to the school's supply shed and found, by experimentation, the fastest broom she could. Next she etched a J and a star shape into its wood near the tail so she could identify it in the future as her broom. Taking it back out onto the open pitch, she swung her leg over and tightened her thighs around the handle, unable to prevent a small giggle from bubbling over her lips; one of Josephine's books had made a euphemism of a broomstick and since she'd discovered this then Jade could hardly take the thing seriously. Squashing her smirk, the first year kicked off the ground a little too firmly, and rocketed into the air like a balloon let loose (though perhaps with an iota more control).
She did a couple of laps to get used to the speed and handling of the broom, and was about to start practising in ernest when she noticed another figure come onto the pitch below her. Jade wanted to know who it was - if it was the Opposition then she'd have to demand they leave, whereas if it was a friend or teammate then maybe they could help her practise. She dropped her broom into a steady dive, pulling up several feet from the ground and calling out, "Is there no peace for the wicked?"
