OOC: Cw: flirts with some dirty language and thoughts, also bad German BIC:
Philippe collected food off the Teppenpaw table and placed it into a picnic basket. It was mid-December and far too cold to go out into the Gardens for a proper picnic, and the MARS rooms were a bit too far to want to lug the laden basket for a fake outdoor picnic, but this room had waterfalls, and Philippe figured that was good enough for a picnic lunch.
So he laid out a blanket next to one of the cascading walls, and placed the basket in the middle of it. Then he watched the doors of the hall until he saw Freddie come through them, then he waved big and wide and called out, “Freddie!”
When this drew the older boy close enough that he could talk without shouting he grinned, and tried, “Hallo! Willst du essen?” In preparation for this ‘impromptu’ picnic, Philippe had checked the German phrase book he had borrowed from the library about a million times to make sure that was how one asked if you wanted to eat, and he didn’t know if he was pronouncing it right, but with luck he was close enough that Freddie could figure out what he meant.
He waved proudly at his spread. “Ich mache Picnic,” he added, which had not been in the phrase book, so he was making do and hoping the English ‘picnic’ was close enough to whatever it was in German. He did not even try to guess which of the versions of indefinite article he was supposed to use and left that out. He probably sounded like a toddler with an awful French tinged American accent but it was the thought that counted, right? “Für dich,” he added, and blushed, because his gutteral ‘ch’ sound was not really gutteral at all and it sounded less like a German ’for you’ as it sounded like ‘for deek’ and from there it was only a dirty thought away from something crude.
Again, he hoped Freddie would know what he meant, because he was trying to be flattering and sweet, and maybe just a little bit flirty, not totally crass. There might be a time for that kind of comment in the future, but not until they were way older and way more comfortable with each other. And probably married, if Mom had any say in it.
OOC: Willst du essen?: Do you want to eat?
Ich mache Picnic: I make picnic.
Für dich: For you.
Freddie was a spontaneous person with more than a little Pecari leaning to his apparently more Teppenpaw personality. He liked to adventure and he liked to take risks and he liked that he usually ended on his feet. He also knew that sometimes, risks could hurt people and it was best to be a good friend. He wouldn't want to adventure alone, and if he went off adventuring and hurt people because he was being risky, then he wouldn't have anyone to adventure with. He was surprised, however, to find that he wasn't the only Teppenpaw who liked to do risky things together. It was mostly his sister's influence that led him to think that a picnic in public for two young men was a risk of sorts but it was easier than he might have expected to shake the feeling of being scrutinized when he saw Philippe waving him down. He broke into a grin and waved back before realizing it was a summons and making his way across Cascade Hall to join the younger Teppenpaw, where he promptly broke into an even wider grin.
The German that came out of Philippe's mouth was perfect, even though it wasn't at all, and Freddie felt his face pinken. He was special enough to make learning even a few phrases worth it? He tried not to read too much into that, although he knew that there was maybe something to read into there. If he wasn't already learning English (and he'd gotten good at it too!), he would've thought Philippe was definitely worth learning some phrases for. As it was, his own English wasn't thorough enough to think anything of Philippe's pronunciation other than that it was perfect and beautiful, and definitely not that it may sound like something else entirely.
"Es ist perfekt," Freddie said softly, trusting that that one was clear enough to an English speaker. He wasn't totally sure how to tell if someone was just being friendly or maybe being more than friendly, especially when it was directed at him. He also wasn't sure how to maybe be more than friendly back at somebody else. But he thought that he'd like to be. "For us?" he asked, shifting the pronoun to include both of them, because he thought that 'us' sounded nice when it meant him and Philippe.

Freddie seemed pleased by the German, even if he was blushing and, Merlin, Philippe really needed to work on his pronunciation so he stopped embarrassing both of them with words that weren't dirty if he could just say them right. But over all it seemed to make Freddie happy, and that was the important part, and he made a mental note to tell Mom that she really should learn some French for Dad.
Philippe beamed as Freddie said the picnic was perfect. He'd understood German! Okay, yes, it was basically accented English for that particular sentence, but 'Es' to 'It' wasn't totally obvious (comparatively) and Philippe felt entirely too pleased to have gotten it.
Philippe nodded excitedly as Freddie changed the pronoun and the language of his last troublesome sentence. "Ja! Für uns!" He was seventy percent sure he had the right word for 'us'. Forty percent sure he was pronouncing it right. However, Freddie said Ja often enough in casual conversation that he was pretty sure he was solid on how to say 'yes' in German. (Though, honestly, it wasn't until he'd started flipping through the phrase book and saw that Germans pronounced their Js like Ys that he'd realized Freddie wasn't just saying a slightly off 'Yeah!')
He knelt down on the blanket he had arranged and started pulling things out of the picnic basket. His German was not strong enough to talk about sandwiches, so he switched to English. "I wasn't sure what you would be hungry for so I grabbed a few kinds of sandwiches. What would you like? Tuna? Turkey? Roast beef?"
