To keep herself occupied, Katey had taken up crocheting. She had quite a bit of downtime between patients sometimes, and she had finally admitted to herself that there was only so much cleaning and organizing she could do. It got a little lonely around here now, without Jean-Loup to keep her company. So she needed a hobby, something she could do sitting in one location that was also not too intensive and she could easily sit down if someone came in.
The medic had begun in time last semester to get something done over the holidays. When the school returned to life in January, she was ready and able to present her first creation as a gift. The yarn was a little too bright red to really represent Crotalus, but it was the color she had most available, so she had gifted it to Selina. It wasn’t amazing, but it would hold (especially since Katey had cheated slightly and put some weather and tearing resistance spells on it).
Katey hadn’t had the courage to try anything other than scarves yet, though. They seemed like they’d be the easiest, just being long rectangles, whereas accounting for things like fingers and toes for socks and gloves respectively felt a little too advanced for her current skill set. To no one’s surprise, she was a bit of a perfectionist, so she wanted to really get these down before moving on any further.
Spending yet another Friday evening alone in the Hospital Wing, she sat and looped to her heart’s content in sight of the door. This time, the yarn was a less aggressive color, a sort of forest green that she thought maybe Mary would like, if it turned out okay. She didn’t really want to cheat again if it could be helped, so she wanted this one to actually be genuinely capable of withstanding the world. This one she had only started recently, so she was only about two inches into it when a potential patient arrived.
Johana Leonie had made a decision. She'd been pestering the healer with questions for a while now, but she was getting older and she thought it was high time she made something more of herself than just a nuisance. She was sure she wasn't the only student at Sonora with her same interests but she might just be the only one willing to do something about it and if tenacity wasn't her strength (it wasn't actually) then what was she? Mostly just a mess, but whatever.
She made her way to the Hospital Wing on a Friday night because she didn't have much else to do - the girls she'd normally spend time with were all doing their own things this evening and Malikhi was studying (she'd been doing her best to help when she could but he did sometimes need time to do studying on his own since he was in Advanced classes now) - and was happy to see that there were no weird ghosts and no hallucinations here tonight. Knocking on the door as she came in, she found Fraulein Willow crocheting. It wasn't something Johana Leonie was particularly good at but she did know of the skill because her mom wasn't half bad and a lot of the women in their village were much better than half bad.
"Hello," she said, forcing the silly vowel that English preferred. "Is now okay time for to ask question? I want become healer," she began, suspecting her questions thus far had made that plenty clear to the woman. "Can I learn with you? Like grown boy last year?"

From Katey’s very first day and on, Johana Leonie had been something of a familiar sight in the hospital wing. That rocky beginning filled with a lot of conversations Katey wasn’t quite sure how to answer had launched a sort of recurring presence. And that was fine - the young medic welcomed any company these days.Well, mostly any. She wasn’t sure how much she could contend with Killian these days. She kept hoping these irritating feelings would subside, but a new wave found her every time she saw him. There were especially complicated feelings lingering on now, given what he had seen from that mysterious silver mist.
Between that and the fear of more questions of gender and sexuality, Katey would definitely take the latter. She had at least some experience there; she hadn’t spoken to any of her sisters in a very long time, but one of them was born as her brother.
But even better yet, Johana Leonie was not here to discuss anything like that this time. Katey immediately and attentively sat down her crocheting the moment the student was in view, and when the question was posed, she instantly stood up. “You can absolutely learn with me!” Katey beamed. This would be amazing! In addition to finally providing some regularly scheduled company, it would be a fantastic opportunity for Johana Leonie. The only obstacle was the formal set up, which meant...
Killian.
“I’ll work it out with your guidance counselor,” Katey smiled. “I think we can work out something to get you some credits for it. Sort of an independent study in healing. But I would love to have you around.” She was retroactively pleased with herself as well to have found out from Selina what all languages the student body at Sonora spoke. She had gotten some French under her belt for working with Jean-Loup, and due to the relatively high volume of German speakers, she had started dabbling in that language as well. “Herzlichen Glückwunsch, junior medic!”
Johana Leonie blinked and took a step back in surprise when the healer popped up from her seat and beamed at her. Johana Leonie was excited too and a warm smile spread across her own face, but she certainly hadn't expected Fraulein Willow to be so cheerful about this. She supposed the woman who was basically the embodiment of everything Johana Leonie wanted to be as a person was always a bit on the bubbly side, but still.
"Danke! Thank you much!" she said, happy to know she'd have an opportunity like this. She was already drafting the letter to her prints in her head and imagining Kai's face when she would tell him when the healer went on to say she'd talk to the guidance counselor and Johana Leonie blinked again, surprised this time. She would have expected the Deputy Headmistress or her own Head of House to be the one to sign off on something like this, and suddenly worried she'd jumped through the hoops in the wrong order. It didn't sound like permission was being sought so much as credits (which Johana Leonie wasn't entirely sure what that meant) so that was some reassurance. The important part was that the woman said she'd love to have Johana Leonie around and that she had picked up a little German. Johana Leonie beamed again. "Danke," she repeated.
"Should I ask Mr. Row before I ask you?" she clarified with a grimace, hating to return to the less positive of what Ms. Willow had said. "Did I do wrong? Or you only do more helping?" she asked, hoping her tone conveyed that she was trying to confirm the process that was meant to be happening. Perhaps there was a permission slip or something that would need done. "Do I need to have signing?"

First rule of medicine: expect the unexpected
by Katey Willow
Katey was so glad to see the excitement in Johana Leonie’s face, to hear it in her voice. That little spark was so familiar - in some ways, the young girl reminded her a bit of herself. It was around that age that Katey had decided she was interested in medicine, too. It was also about the time she started dating Ethan.
Hopefully, Johana Leonie’s similarities in taste stopped after academics and vocation.
“Just doing more helping,” Katey confirmed. “If Mr. Row needs you to sign anything, I will definitely let you know.” As she said his name, she made a mental note to go talk to Killian in the morning. It would be a Saturday, but realistically, the both of them were something of workaholics, so she was certain Killian wouldn’t mind a work-related conversation. That would be a safe topic, anyway, and she could most likely keep her stupid Katey brain in check.
“This weekend, I’ll dig out my notes from going over things with Jean-Loup last year and prepare to show you around,” the young medic promised. “Then if you want to meet me here after class on Monday, we can get down to business. How does that sound?”
