‘Well,' he mused. ‘The worst is over.' He hoped it was anyhow. He received a howler from the harpy sometimes known as his mother a little over three months ago demanding his presence at the family seat. Several more howlers soon followed the initial order. He hated that she would not let him live in peace. The cause of the disturbance was none other than his fiancée. This time he could not be more delighted for the …witch. She found some poor, gentle soul to destroy and wanted out of their long-standing betrothal. What could he do but return? His room still looked as it always had, down to the textbooks in the small bookcase. He would have thought the dowager would have removed the offending items. After all, his studies led him to believe he could leave the life for which he had been groomed since infancy. The shouting much uncharacteristic to his mother's station sealed the medic's decision to return to Sonora as soon as the papers releasing his fiancée could be drawn up.
So now he was back, ‘home' if any place could be called such. The thin layer of dust over his desk and chair were the only things that proved his absence. Indeed, he wondered if he were really necessary to the institution. Any nurse could heal the cuts and bruises students managed to acquire. Still, he was not going to leave if he still had a position at the school. Anything was better than dealing with his mother until she had had a couple of years to get over the insult. “Now to work,” he spoke aloud failing to realise no one was around to hear him. His familiar had been caught in the curse crossfire during the first week and had to be put down. His mother took pleasure in the animal's demise. At least she had not wanted to turn it into a horrible muff or stole.
He wiped the counters and cots. He replaced various medical supplies making sure to note which he would have to restock in the near future. Wolfe took comfort from the routine. At present nothing required he think about anything more taxing than where he was going to get next month's supply of bandages. It was good to be home.
