A New Life by Charity Stones

Charity had never been good at braids as Evelyn was. Evelyn couldn't do them on herself to save her life, but she'd been able to do some pretty intricate braided knots on Charity's hair and Charity almost missed her daughter's help just then.

Dad died in jail. I have a foster family because they said they couldn't find you. I guess that means you didn't want to come get me. It really bothers me that you left me behind but I want to think there's a reason.

She pushed the thought aside and settled on a loose bun instead, tying her hair out of the way of her neck to leave her shoulders bare. She'd really debated buying this dress. For one, it definitely wasn't her color. For two, the color seemed inappropriate. But she'd been assured that she looked beautiful and that Todd would love it and that it would be fine. After all, Todd was the only one who knew of any real reasons it wouldn't be appropriate, as the fact that they had a child together wasn't such a big issue here.

I wasn't really sure I wanted to see you again, but a friend of mine pointed out that I don't want to lose that opportunity either. I don't know what to think, but I don't want to decide now, so I thought I'd at least reach out. Do you want to talk to me, mom?

Charity's little girl babbled at her happily, smiling in her flower girl outfit. Michaela was three now and she was beautiful. They hadn't changed her middle name, but they hadn't spoken about it again either. She also wasn't flying around so much these days. Todd had made very clear that he loved Charity and Michaela, but he also needed to know what life Charity wanted them to be part of.

I love you still, mom.

Evelyn

Todd hadn't said she had to burn the letter, hadn't even said she couldn't talk to Evelyn, but Charity knew what she needed to do. That was a life she'd left behind and if she was going to move forward, she needed to really leave it behind. Needed it to leave her behind. Todd had suggested they could meet up with Evelyn if Charity wanted, but she didn't want that. She didn't want that life anymore.

The ashes were cold now and the letter was gone, and Charity Stones held Michaela's hand as she walked down the aisle toward a new name, and a new husband, with her new daughter. A new life.
