This had taken too stinking long. There was never the right moment and now that Freddie had skirts and makeup and things, he wanted to actually get to use it! Which meant he needed to tell his friend. He found her at the Pecari table at lunch, because of course he did. She was a Pecari. Of course, the fact that she was a Pecari maybe meant she was more likely to not be at her own table than were other students, but he hadn't done the statistics on that to confirm.
He took a seat beside her, greeting her with a smile and "hey." The colors were fading from his hair and he felt a bit like a washed up sea sponge. But like, a cute one.
"I want that I tell you for some week," he began, grimacing for an apology. Just rip off the bandage.
Just rip it off. Just go. What was the worst that could happen? Well, some pretty bad stuff actually, but still. "But I don't know how. I like wear dress and makeup and I hope maybe you don't mind? I'm still a boy," he added for clarification, remembering his conversation with Ellie. Hey, Ellie and Anya were friends . . . maybe they could all get together!

Anya had never quite found a best friend at Sonora. She had friends. She, in fact, had quite a lot of friends. Freddie was her go-to for outside adventures. Theo had her back whenever she wanted a blanket fort buddy. Ellie was in that weird place where she was Jasmine's friend first, but Anya's age, and then Jasmine had thrust Ellie's secret on her, and now Ellie had told her that secret, and it was kind of weird but kind of good, and they were definitely friends now, even if Ellie still had more in common with Jasmine than her, but Ellie wanted to learn to flutter, so that was perfect. Stanley was Theo's friend, but Theo had a way of making all his friends friends, so that was fine, too, even if they were far apart enough in age that it would be two more years before her and Stanley were in the same class, and then only for that one year. And then there were all the people - well, most of the people - on the Quidditch team who were pretty cool to hang out with from time to time, but she wouldn't call any of them super close.
But anyway, she didn't have a best friend. Mostly she blamed the lack of other Pecaris in her year for this, particularly not having a roommate, which was how Jasmine had scored her best friend, but Mom had somehow managed to gather a close friend group without other female Pecaris, and Mom was . . . Mom, so clearly Anya must be doing something wrong.
This was the topic she was contemplating today as she chewed her peanut butter and jelly sandwich all on her lonesome. She didn't often eat alone. She usually found someone or a group of someones to join, and when she didn't someone joined her more often than they didn't (which she was pretty sure would happen today, too, because she'd arrived early and just hadn't seen any of her usual lunch mates to join when she'd gotten to the Hall, so they could still join her once they did), but for right now, she was alone and not liking it and wondering how it had come to this.
Other than because she'd literally run here directly from her last morning class because she was starving.
The problem was that she didn't have anyone she hung out with regularly enough that lunch company was a given rather than a high probability. But she didn't hang out with anyone that regularly because there were too many people she wanted to check in with and if she set a schedule (which she could never keep to a schedule anyway, and just the fleeting idea of one made her uncomfortable) someone would inevitably get left out, and that was unacceptable.
Before she could get too far into this contemplation, though, Freddie arrived at her table and she stopped worrying about it because today was not the day she'd have to sit through lunch all by herself.
She grinned at her Teppenpaw friend as he took the seat next to hers. "Hi, glad you joined me!" she said sincerely.
He started the conversation off seriously, and after she parsed her way through the awkward declaration of intent to tell her something, she nodded her understanding and waited patiently as he got his words together.
Once he did, she blinked once because while she'd known Ellie's secret already, Freddie's did genuinely surprise her. Not in a bad way though, so she was quick to answer, "I don't mind, I promise. That's cool. I have a ton of dresses from Jasmine you can have, if you're interested. I don't want them." If Freddie had only ever voluntarily put on a dress one time in his life, that was still one time more than Anya ever had. "Though I think she might be siphoning off some of her favorites to Ellie now."

Freddie was glad that Anya was glad he joined her. It was reassuring because if she was glad to have him around, then she probably wouldn't mind his news as much. Or maybe it would be worse? After all, Hana had liked him at one point too. When he did tell her, her reaction took a moment for him to understand. It wasn't that he actually had a hard time understanding her words, but he wanted to make sure he actually for sure understood her. When he did, he burst into a grin.
"That is much good," he beamed. "I think that I will do more grows. Your dresses not fitting me long." He cocked his head at Anya.
It was very confusing to him that Ellie had been so nice and Anya was being so nice but Hana hadn't been. Things were getting better, sure, but they weren't good. But here Ellie and Anya straight up offered to share stuff or help him and they wanted to hang out and it was fine. Why did people have such strong opinions about what other people liked to do if they weren't hurting people? Why did people care if he wore a dress or if Anya didn't? It seemed like it should be equally normal for either of them.
All at once, he was feeling a lot of feelings. Wrinkling up his nose so that he could grin and feel feelings at the same time, he leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Anya in as big a hug as he could manage sitting next to her on a bench seat. "Thank you. You are much good friend."

Anya had never changed how she talked for Freddie. She'd never been quite sure if that would be rude or not. She figured that as long as she was patient with his misunderstandings, it was good for him to hear how people actually talked instead of watering it down. This was one of the times there was clearly a misunderstanding, so she just grinned at him and shook her head, "I mean . . . not what I'm wearing now." She was definitely on the After Freddie side of the hand-me-down chain. "Jasmine's seventeen and still a little taller than you, so she's got old clothes that would fit you now that I don't mind if you get them now instead of me getting them later."
She returned his hug tightly and warmly, and grinned back at him when they pulled apart again enough that he could see it. "Good. I try to be a good friend. You're a good person, Freddie. I'm glad we're friends. Now. Most important friendship question." She waved one quarter of her PBJ around between them. "Are you a grape jelly kind of guy or a strawberry jam sort of person? No judgement," she promised. "I just need to know what kind to stock when you visit over lunch time when we're older." 'Older' could be this summer, if his parents allowed transatlantic friend visits, or it could be after they graduated, but either way, she wanted to be ready. "Personally, I go for the strawberry."
