It was a waiting room like just about every other. Something was a little too sterile, a little too empty. The only contrast to the white walls and pale furniture were the slight pops of color on the magazines scattered across the corner tables. Indeed, even the reception blended in, her pale pink shirt hardly distinguishable from the walls behind her, her features unremarkable, hair and eyes dull. She seemed the type to always be kind to those who came through, but she was removed, almost not real. And she spoke quietly.

She was the only one who spoke now, her occasional phone conversation melting into the same quiet buzz that the television mounted to the wall gurgled out. No one else made a noise. The world felt still, with only two people waiting. They sat next to each other, but they sat in silence.

They were sisters, but they hardly looked like it. Desiree had never seen much resemblance between herself and Sally, anyway. They both resembled their mothers quite strongly, although Sally did have Ross’s eyes. That was a bit striking, actually, almost like looking at him again. Not quite as badly as Asher, who probably looked the most like him, an ironic fact since he was the only one never to know their father, or at least to think they knew him. That was all so messy. Who knew the truth anymore? It had died with him, it seemed.

Desiree did not spend much time with Sally. It had been quite the surprise when Sally’s husband Gideon had appeared. Desiree had recently moved in with Arnold and his daughter Violet, so she assumed that maybe their brother-in-law had plans with him, although that was also something of an odd pairing, honestly. But when she informed him that Arnold wasn’t home and he was not interested in that, she was surprised. From there, her day had only gotten more surprising.

In her wildest dreams she had never expected to be the one Sally asked to accompany her anywhere, let alone here, but the sister Gideon brought her to see was not like the usual Sally. She seemed smaller, somehow. Scared. Alone, in a way, despite the company. Then she explained, and everything changed. In the vulnerability Sally willingly showed her, Desiree felt her heart pull. Truthfully, she had never liked Sally - she was jealous of her, confused by her, marveled in her shadow. Resentful of the way Eden connected to her. But now, Sally needed her, and Desiree had never felt more like her sister.

So now they were here, awaiting the physician who could help them. It was a Muggle establishment with pink P’s on the building, somewhere that no one who could hurt Sally’s reputation could ever find them. And it was going to be okay. Desiree didn’t know how to say that, how to console her older sister. But she could physically feel the tension in Sally’s body. She reached her hand over to Sally’s lap, sitting it on top of hers. To Desiree’s surprise, Sally grasped it. They looked at each other. Desiree smiled without meaning to. Sally didn’t smile back, but some of the fear left her eyes. She was not alone, and she knew it. They waited there, in quiet understanding.
