Would you do me the honour...? (tag Allegra)
by Julius Astley
At home, Julius had next to no interest in the balls that he attended or that his family threw but he understood their usefulness. They were necessary to make connections, to create relationships, even business deals. At Sonora, he had no interest at all and he highly doubted that the event would be as useful. It was unlikely, he felt, that it would be the proper affair that balls should be. He imagined that it was going to be more like a big party, rather than the formal affairs that he was used to.
He had intended to go alone or preferably, not attend at all. However, he had received two letters - one from his mother, one from his father - and he had been given no choice but to attend and what's more, attend with a partner. His mother had simply wanted him to socialise and try and make some more friends (she was no fool, she knew her son was a difficult boy to be friends with) while his father wanted him to still use the ridiculous event to create connections with those worthy enough. He had 'suggested' (though Julius knew that his father's suggestions were more orders and expectations) that he find a Brockert girl to go with.
Julius, for once, didn't mind agreeing to do this. The Brockerts were a more than respectable family and to be seen with one of the girls would only do good things for the Astley name and his own reputation. Julius had briefly considered the De Matteo girl but she was a bit too young for Julius to find her tolerable and he wasn't about to give his own ideas of what should be done after his father had already 'suggested' what his son and heir should do.
Of course, his father hadn't specified which Brockert to choose so Julius had decided to try and ask Allegra. She was in the same house as himself and as a result, they had crossed paths a few times. They were not friends, by any means, but he had always been respectful and cordial. She was a Brockert, after all.
So, he was in the Crotalus common room, settled in an armchair. He had sent a short, polite note to her requesting to speak to her and was simply waiting for her to show up.

Allegra sat in her room working on the quilt for Emerald and Winston's wedding again. She had been working on it all year as a full sized quilt took a bit longer than the baby blankets she'd made for her younger brothers and cousins. Allegra had always been fairly close to Emerald, based on the Crotalus being the first child born in their family that wasn't Emerald's younger sibling and a bond they had as the oldest in a huge family. Although the fourth year had actually not had as hard a time with having so many siblings as Emerald, being that her parents had spaced their children out better than Uncle Zeke and Aunt Opal had. And also, of course, not actually having to live in the same house as Topaz. But then, Allegra was the same age as the Aladren, so it rather evened out with the whole "putting up with Topaz thing"
Anyway, the Crotalus was close to Emerald and wanted her to love the quilt she made-and wanted Winston to...not hate it-so she was spending most of her spare time on it. And it wasn't just because Allegra wanted to get it done in time for the wedding either, she also found quilting and crocheting and other crafts to be quite soothing. She could get lost in it and forget about stressful things like having Topaz as a first cousin.
So she was rather into it when the note arrived from her year and house mate, Julius Astley. Allegra looked at it in surprise. Julius had always been fairly polite to her, which she knew wasn't the case with most people but then, she was a Brockert and it would not do for him to be rude to her. She knew it was in his best interest to be cordial to her and to an extent, vice versa. Not that Allegra would ever be rude to someone, she just wasn't really like that. Rudeness was more of a Topaz thing.
She put her quilting away and fixed herself up. It was not okay for her to leave her room looking messy. Then Allegra walked down to the Crotalus common room to find Julius sitting there. "Hello, Mr. Astley. I got your note."
Julius rose from his seat when Allegra walked into the room, clasping his hands together behind his back. He gave her a respectful tip of his head and returned her greeting, "Hello, Miss Brockert. Thank you for meeting with me."
In all his time at Sonora, Julius had never really given much thought to the fairer sex. He could acknowledge and recognise beauty but he wasn't one to obsess over it and he certainly didn't share his opinions with anyone else, male or otherwise. There also was simply no time for Julius to focus on such frivolities as he had homework and the Aronos and many other (and, in his mind, better) things to do with his free time. There was no place for a girlfriend or even a simple crush in his life and as such, his life remained simple and uncomplicated and perfectly within Julius' control.
The ball had, however, forced him to consider appearances because, as an Astley, appearances were everything. He was going to be seen in the company of someone else at a formal affair. Beauty was only going to be an advantage and he wanted he and his partner to be one of, if not the most, shining couple in attendance. As a result, he appreciated Allegra's natural good looks and allure.
"As I'm sure you're aware, Miss Brockert, Sonora is to host a ball," he began. Nobody in the entire school could be without the knowledge that a ball was happening. He'd already published articles on that fact a few times already and the event hadn't even happened yet. "Would you do me the honour of accompanying me to the event?"
It wasn't the most romantic of invitations but Julius was confident and didn't mince his words. He wouldn't be hurt if she rejected him as he had no interest in the ball anyway. This was all for his father.
"I believe we would have a wonderful time," he added before waiting for her reply.
"You're very welcome, Mr. Astley." Allegra replied, smiling politely. She had very little idea of what he could possibly want from her. They were pleasant and cordial to each other, probably at least in part because it was dictated by society to do so, but not even remotely close. Being in the same year and house did not mean being friends. Look at Topaz and Ness. They despised each other. Of course, that was only what one expected of Allegra's cousin. No matter who Topaz had had as a roommate, total eminity could be the only result.
On the plus side, while the Crotalus didn't want anyone to suffer, to be terrorized by her cousin, she couldn't help but be somewhat relieved. The more time Topaz spent tormenting Ness meant less time spent tormenting Allegra-or Sapphire for that matter. And the other Aladren gave off the impression of being nothing like her or the second year. Of not being what Topaz had made the two of them. In short, she could take it better.
Not that the level of ability to handle what Topaz dished out mattered to the Aladren. However, she hated her roommate so much that it was a distraction from the usual torture of her sisters and Allegra. A welcome one. Anything that prevented them from being tortured by the Aladren was welcome to them.
She wondered if Topaz was going to start in the younger kids as Uncle Eustace had on her little brothers. A recent letter from her mother about what was going on in their family had mentioned that her cousin Miles had started developing allergies, to dairy and eggs as well as various seasonal outdoor allergens. Allegra could only imagine what Topaz would do with that.
Julius brought up the ball and....asked her to be his date. She was a tad surprised based on them not being close and neither being prefects who had to do the opening dance. She didn't know what she expected to be the reason for him summoning her, possibly something schoolwork related or even being interviewed for the paper for some odd reason, but certainly not...this. Julius only really seemed to like Evelyn, but she supposed it would not be proper for him to go to the ball with the Pecari. Still, there were lots of girls the other Crotalus could have asked, such as Topaz or Sylvia or Sophia Priory.
"I would love to." Allegra replied, blushing and smiling. She couldn't believe she actually had a date!
She just hoped Topaz didn't try to ruin things for her.
