Get that thing away from me by Gabrielle Lee

Dear Lord, it was pink. It was very very pink. Was there even a word to describe just how pink it was? More to the point, it didn’t seem likely to ever be not pink again. Gabrielle tried to look at her reflection in a positive light. The dress, a dress…Lord. Okay, she was so done being positive. Dresses were for Vivi and Letty, they were not for Gabby. She was still navigating her newfound life not to mention her hair. Gabby looked through the other clothes in her trunk and had to repress the screams she felt begging to come out. Her mother had packed dresses and skirts in genuinely offensive colors. Yellows and baby blue, pastels and all the colors of the rainbow, and the most heinous offender: the dress. Here she was, a million kilometers away from home, in a desert, and all her mother had given her was the trunk of girl . She screamed just a little teensy tiny bit before wincing at her own unexpected volume.

“Sorry,” She murmured at the other people in the room with her, “A stressful day.”

How about a colourful shirt? by Allyn Alderwin

Standing and screaming in front of a mirror sounded like a cry for help if ever she heard it. Looking up she saw Gabby wincing at the clothes her trunk was offering, and without any obvious imperfections in her appearance or any offending bugs crawling across the mirror, took the small leap of imagination to presume it was the clothes that were the problem here.

Allyn's parents had long ago accepted her disdain for dresses. She didn't find dresses useful from a practical point of view, but she did still enjoy bright colours and patterns, feeling that there could be some compromise between fabulous gowns and drab work-wear.

She pulled out a vibrant shirt and offered it over, asking "Would you like to borrow this?", and then because her curiosity got the better of her, "And are your parents stuck in the past, or simply their own fantasy?"

YES please. I’ll take anything else at this point by Gabrielle Lee

Merde. Gabby’s mother would have smacked her and then made her do the dishes if she’d heard that particular swear word. Television made it easy to learn “bad things” but who wanted to be a princess? Other than Vivi and Letty, those two were always meant to be princesses.

“Thank you, your name is Ally? Allyn?”

Usually, Gabby was the best at remembering people’s names. She could still remember the names of all her neighbors back home, so one name should have been simple for her. But, as Ally/Allyn had seen, this was a special circumstance.

“My mother,” she admitted with a sour taste in her mouth, “Would like to think me her little princess forever. While it works quite well for my younger sisters it is not so for me. I like your shirt, thank you for lending it to me. Where are you from?”
