'Professor' DiAnna Diaz

“Okay, sixth and seventh years,” DiAnna waited for the small class to settle. “Engage you logical brains and let your Inner Eye rest for a while, this is a thinking class.” She doubted many of them would be pleased by this news, but as she herself had come to understand while she worked on her Divinations major, sometimes just Seeing wasn’t sufficient to impress a board of examiners. “The focus of today’s class is different scrying techniques. You’ve got your traditional crystal ball, as well as a liquid surface, other crystals or stones, mirrors and smoke.” The required tools for engaging in each of these methods were placed randomly out on the tables that had remained in Professor Mathers’ circular arrangement. “Your assignment this week is to write five feet -” she paused to allow any negative reactions to pass, “- on which scrying method you prefer.” Really it was an easy assignment, despite its length, because technically there was no right or wrong answer.

“There are a number of ways you can go about this,” DiAnna continued to explain the assignment. “You can opt to explore scientific and historical accuracies of each method, or use personal experience to explain your preferences, or a mixture of both. If you’ve happened to miss a class when one of these methods was being taught, or if you’d just like to remind yourself, feel free to use some of your time this class to reacquaint yourself. Just give me a heads up before you start making fires so I can keep an eye on you.” Smoke scrying, if the Diviner had entered an enlightened state, could be especially dangerous in classrooms. As a professor – or acting professor, at any rate – DiAnna would list this particular method as the least favourable means of scrying. Give her a crystal ball any day – the worst that could happen in that instance would be the ball falling on someone’s toe for a painful split-second.

“If anyone has any questions, feel free to come and discuss them with me. Otherwise you’re welcome to chat about your thoughts and opinions with others, just so long as the work you submit is entirely your own. You’ve only got a week to complete the assignment, so I suggest you get started.”
