Hey,I would post this on the chatzy but I can't get in there at the moment....
I was wondering why the Quidditch points counted towards the House Cup. Winning the Quidditch championship is somewhat its own glory, and the two cups are always distinct in the HP books. If the Quidditch points count towards the House Cup, it means that the team that wins Quidditch is also more likely to win the House Cup, which seems to rather compromise the idea of it being a separate and slightly more academic/conduct based award.

I’m going to try to explain this, but I’m not sure how good of a job I will do. We award points more as an OOC thing for authors than anything else. It’s to show that their posts count and make a difference. Quidditch points aren’t much more than regular class points (one game could equal out of a beginner/intermediate/advance lesson).We give them points to give all teams credit towards the quality and quantity of their posts. Most years, the Quidditch Cup winner is not the same as the House Cup winner. It all just depends on how many people post in the lessons and the games. Actually, in the last seven terms, only 1 year had the same house win both cups. It just goes to show that the Quidditch points may be a factor, but they do not determine the winner.
Someone else might be able to give a better explanation than me.

That makes sense. I was just worried that it would unbalance things as the teams that win get through to the final, so they get more chances to contribute points to their house. It's reassuring to know that, in practice, it doesn't break the system!

Most games only have a difference of a couple of points between the two competing teams, so it's not nearly as overwhelming a victory as one might think. And while making it to the final does give a small advantage to the finalists, the authors from other Houses who are not involved in the game spend that same time writing class posts for non-Quidditch players while the Quidditch authors are occupied and distracted writing Quidditch posts.
