Waverly Canterbury

Ever since Wendy had gone vegetarian, Waverly had been a little more sensitive to the eating habits of others. All of a sudden there were people who were lactose intolerant, vegan, or the worst: gluten intolerant. Waverly could not imagine going through life unable to eat bread and pastries as she had her entire life. Her mother was a pastry chef for crying out loud. It would be torture.

She was grateful that she was allergy-free and used that to her advantage in the baking club. She had asked everyone at the beginning of this term to write down any allergies they had so she could pick out certain recipes that everyone could enjoy baking and, most importantly, eating. The group she was working with had worked through her for almost a full year now, not to mention the more experienced members, and so she decided to do something a little more difficult. It would be fun, but she wasn’t sure that everyone would be able to get it on the first try. Even if their two hours of baking came to naught, Waverly had cinnamon rolls ready and kept warm by a charm so everyone would be able to enjoy the sweet goodies.

As people walked in, she waved and smiled and greeted them warmly. She knew all of them by now after so many months baking together. Waverly was really glad to have such an awesome group of people to bake with. Once everyone was in and seemed to be settling down, she went up to the front.

“Hi everyone!” she greeted them a little loudly over the fray. She was smiling was widely as always, happy to see people here. “So I’m guessing you can smell what I’ve been baking,” she said, referring to the wafts of cinnamon that mixed with the other inconclusive smells from the potions classroom. “Today we’re making cinnamon rolls! It’s going to be a little difficult, but they’re so good when you make them from scratch.

“These are the ingredients for the kind we’re making today. It’ll make a dozen cinnamon rolls.” On the chalkboard she had painstakingly written out the list. “There’s a piece of paper with directions on your desk if you need reference, but I’ll be doing it with you too. My VP should be walking around, so stop her if you need any help.” She smiled at Bri. With that, she brought out her saucepan and lit a fire underneath it just as she had with her cauldron in Potions before she’d dropped the class. “First we’re going to warm the milk…”

………………………………………………………………….

“And once they look golden brown, take them out. They should be done!” Waverly smiled, enjoying the smell of the cinnamon. “Now use the gentle cooling charm on the rolls. Once they’re warm and not super hot, spoon out the frosting that we made and spread it over them. Then feel free to eat away! If yours didn’t turn out perfectly, you can always come and take some of mine.” Waverly did just as she had advised and spread the frosting over her own cinnamon roll before taking a bite. It was warm and soft, though it had a little too much cinnamon, and she smiled.

“Next week I think we’re going to learn how to make tarts, but for now enjoy the rolls!”

Jade Owen

As she'd gotten older, Jade's interest in food had broadened and developed. That is to say, she had always been interested in food, but she was mostly only focused on eating it. So long as it tasted good, Jade wasn't going to be picky. That, however, was no longer the case. For almost a year now she had been vegetarian, thanks largely due to her friendship with Aria, and it mattered to her where he food came from. She was keen to understand the full chain of supply, from field to plate. She often thought she enjoyed the food more if she knew how it came to be before her.

Similarly, she had been in Waverly's baking club for three years, now, and was quickly becoming adept at mastering new recipes without screwing them up too badly on her first try. Baking was good fun, not least because it usually ended with a tasty treat, but Jade's culinary skills had extended past pastry, and she had even prepared a few meals for her family while at home over the most recent break. She had every intention of engaging in some more advanced cooking over the summer, which had equal draw in satisfying her desire to improve her own skills and in making vegetarian meals more varied and interesting. She could now understand that putting effort into something could be worthwhile, especially if she got to eat that delicious something afterwards.

Cinnamon rolls were one of the many pastries Jade liked to it, and she was happy that Waverly had decided to teach that particular recipe today. The scent of warm cinnamon as she walked into the potions classroom was sufficient to make Jade start salivating even before the recipe had been presented. Chatting merrily to others while she worked, Jade followed the instructions, somehow managing to fare much better at baking than she ever did at potions, and produced a reasonably decent-looking set of rolls. She was pleased with them, at any rate, and delightedly drizzled frosting over her creations and wasted no time in selecting one to eat.

"Mmm," she enthused around her mouthful, ignoring the slight burning on her tongue from the freshly baked roll. "Pretty good, if I do say so myself."
