Mia was nervous from the moment the professor began talking. From the looks of it, Potions looked an awful lot like chemistry. The only scientific equation Mia could put together was that Mia + Science= Nothing Good! Mia took a seat behind some friendly faces. Jenna and Tally didn't seem to realize she was there.
'That's ok.' Mia thought 'They're just really into making their potion. That's totally cool.'
Mia looked around hoping someone would notice her and offer to partner up. Even back in Jersey, Mia was not noticed too much. Usually, she had to make the first offer. Mia wasn't too sure she wanted to offer someone a failing grade in potions by partnering with her. Maybe someone would come over or maybe not but either way, she had better get started. Mia took out her ingredients, looked at the text and organized her stuff. Any little bit of delay was helpful.\n\n
Jenna looked up from the potion for just a moment, and saw that Mia was sitting by herself. Just like she herself was at the beginning of term feast. And Mia came up to talk to her then. Time to return the favor now.
"Oy, Mia, come over here. Maybe we cam work as a threesome, or if not, we could help you find a parner, or, something, I suppose. Just come over here," rambled Jenna as she beckoned for her to come over. She mentally hit herself, it seemed she either didn't talk, or wouldn't shut up.\n\n
Mia looked up from her organzing to see Jenna calling her over. She breathed a sigh of relief that she didn't have to work alone. Mia quickly gathered her stuff and hurried over to Jenna and Tally. She was so grateful to have met the two at the feast or she couldv'e been in quite a lot of trouble just now.
"Thanks a bunch Jen" Mia said gratefully "You guys are life savers!"
Mia sat down next to her friends and looked to see how far they had gotten. \n\n
Tally laughed as Jenna stumbled over her words. Rambling was something Tally did often. Mia seemed to looked extrememly relieved and she completely understood.
"No worries, Mia, I'm not so good at this either. But with Jenna here, we're doing pretty good." Tally gestured to Jenna then to the cauldron, "I just put in the Phoenix tears and the potion turned blue. Do you want to do the next step?"\n\n
Mia looked a bit apprehensive at the ingredients and the now blue potion in the cauldron. Mia remembered a certain incident in a chemistry class which involved a blue chemical, an explosion and her lab partner covered in red marks from head to toe. Mia forced the memory from her head and skimmed over where the girls were in the text and looked back at the ingredients.
"Okay, sure. So the next step would be adding the powdered dragon scales and then the phoenix tears." Mia recited from the book.
She frowned as she reached over to get the powdered scales. As she pulled her arm back she knocked into the cauldron, nearly tipping it over.
"Oops!" Mia exclaimed nervously as she steadied the cauldron.
'Mia, calm down you idiot! Your nerves are going to ruin this for your friends! This isn't rocket science, it's putting stuff into a pot!' Mia scolded herself.
She inhaled and exhaled and continued with her ingredients. Mia poured the powedered scales into the cauldron. After hissing a bit, Mia reached for the rest of the phoenix tears. She poured the tears into the cauldron with a satisfied grin and turned to her friends. Mia asked them cheerfully:
Jenna came to the conclusion that Mia had absolutely no problem with Potions. None, except that she doubted herself, and that broke off her concentration.
"I'll do it," she said. The next part was easy, all she had to do was stir until the potion was a simmmering shade of aqua. She found that it worked whether you stirred clockwise, or counter-clockwise. But it came out better if you went clockwise, so Jenna did just that.
Finally, it began to simmer, and it was a nice, aqua color. Jenna smiled at their success at Tally and Mia. She was always proud of her potions work. "I think this is an A+ worthy potion," she declared, "Now who wants to be the one who hands it in?"\n\n
Tally couldn't surpress the giggle that had escaped when Mia almost knocked the cauldron over. She wouldn't have minded as long as it hadn't landed on her.
Jenna had finished the potion beautifully and now it sat in all its aqua glory. Thinking about Mia's near accident and Jenna having done so much as it was, Tally smiled at them both.
"I'll do it. This actually wasn't so bad." She added as an afterthought while scooping the substance into a vile and capping it.
She set off to the front desk and placed it into a stand, marking it as hers and her friends' potion before heading back to them with a satisfied smile.\n\n
Mia was absolutely stunned to see that a creation in a class that was similar to chemistry had actually come out properly. She knew she just need to relax but that seemed to be easier said than done. Mia watched the potion turn a lovely shade of aqua and watched Tally bring it up to the teacher's desk. Mia smiled as Tally came back with a satisfied smile of her own. Mia couldn't take all the credit. This wasn't her potion, it was their potion. Hers, Jenna's and Tally's. Mia now had a revised form of the only scientific equation she knew:
Mia + Science + Confidence + Friends = Perfect Potion\n\n
