Isis had placed small rocks on every desk, innocuous enough in appearance but possibly perplexing in location. She genuinely enjoyed the more puzzled facial expressions of some students as they noticed the stones, usually belonging to first-year or possibly second-year Muggleborns, who were still comparably inexperienced with magic and the weird forms it took. But then again, it was just a rock. Things didn’t really get weird until they got older.
After allowing her typical tardiness grace period, she began. “Good day, everyone. I hope you’ve all got your homework ready to turn in. If you would, please pass those up to the front now.” It was a short assignment, approximately a paragraph of summary of what they had recently learned about yetis. As the papers came in, she aligned the stacks before placing them on her desk. “Excellent. Now we can get down to business.”
“Today, we’re going to talk about basic Banishing,” the young substitute went on. “The spell we’ll be working with is Depulso.” As always, relevant, note-worthy information appeared in chalk behind her. “Banishment is much easier than its counterpart, Summoning, but nonetheless, it’s okay if you have trouble with it, first years especially.” She didn’t expect perfection, although it was entirely possible they had covered it in another class earlier in the year (although not terribly much earlier, she imagined) and thus had acquired a bit more skill. Nonetheless, Banishing was a field of magic that could always use more practice, especially in witches and wizards this young.
“A sweep of your wand timed with the incantation should produce a white light and cause the rock to disappear. Watch: Depulso,” Isis demonstrated, the rock on her desk disappearing into nothingness under the guise of a white burst of light. “This is solo work, but you’re welcome to talk amongst yourselves as long as you’re still practicing. Try to keep it somewhat class-relevant, of course. Your peers may have different ways of visualizing that may help you out.” Isis strongly felt a student’s greatest resource was his classmates, so she tried to stress the importance of class-pertinent conversation. Of course, she wasn’t able to hear the specifics of every conversation, which left her a bit lenient on non-helpful chatter. She was a fairly lenient professor in general, which was, she felt, probably much better for the kids than, say, that strict Professor Pye they had prior to her.
“If you have any more questions, I’ll be up here grading these paragraphs. If not, go ahead and get started.” While she of course wanted to be as helpful as possible, Isis also somewhat hoped no one had any questions for her. With any luck, she could get through all of these, scratch them into the grade book, and have the papers handed back by the end of the period, an optimistic goal, perhaps, but she happened to read quickly.
OOC: I think you all know the drill. You need 200 or more words, originality, creativity, to write for only your character, and to have fun. Feel free to tag Isis if she’s needed, and please don’t be afraid to have your character fail. The HP wiki says that this spell was covered in second-year Defense, which means firsties especially may experience difficulties. While some of them may succeed, it ties better with the realism aspect for some to fail their first several attempts. All that being said, have at it!
Things were winding down, and the idea of going home left the taste of sour candy on Uzume's lips. She wasn’t sure what was worse, going home and pretending everything was fine, or staying at school and pretending her life at home didn’t exist. It’s not that she didn’t like her home life. In fact when her grandfather wasn’t around she truly enjoyed the life of an upperclass Pureblood. However summer marked the time of the Obon festival to celebrate one's ancestors, which always left her feeling a little unsettled, especially when it came to Jun. Thankfully Obon wasn’t the only festival of summer. Fireworks festivals as well as summer parties would be more than enough to get her mind off of any dreary thoughts. Then again she would probably have to go out with the family, seeing as all her childhood friends had moved on after Jun’s passing, well all except one that is...
Uzu thought more about the summertime as she handed in her paper for grading. Even her attire, a pale blue summer dress with sunflowers, showed that the warmer months were on her mind. Yet despite her wandering thoughts, she still managed to somehow drag herself to the Library to complete her DADA homework. Because DADA was a class that actually mattered, she was forced to study a lot more than she would have liked to. Then again, with her meager efforts in COMC and Transfiguration, she supposed it wouldn’t hurt to invest a little time in her schoolwork.
For the most part, she enjoyed DADA. The spells were useful and fun, but the most exciting thing about the class was those special days when she got the chance to ‘practice’ spells on her classmates. Today unfortunately was not one of those fun days. Uzume pouted at the rock before her, wishing it was a more entertaining object. She poked it a few times, hoping it was a tricky creature just disguised as a rock, but alas, it was just a rock.
Uzume rested her head on her hands, since there was nothing better to do, and began to watch her classmates efforts. Closing her eyes, she listened to the voices around her. As she lay her head on her arms, the feeling of sleepiness crept up on her. Although by now her morning dance practices in MARS were routine, she forgot how tired they could make her. She had almost fallen asleep when the voice of her neighbor caught her attention.
“What?” she asked a softly after a moment, staring at them with sleepy eyes.
