“Good morning, students,” Erika called out. An amused smile crossed her face at some of the more blurry-eyed students. She could empathize, as she was not normally a morning person and relied heavily on a cup of coffee, but today was Friday, which meant that a letter from her wife (she still had trouble believing that she was married even after all this time and to someone so amazing) would arrive soon. Thus, putting her in a wonderfully chipper mood. Of course, given that this was the normal Friday routine, she doubted that any of her students were actually surprised by this and the bonus for them is it meant no chance of a pop quiz.
“If you would, open your books to page sixty. Today, we will be learning about two spells. Alohomora and Colloportus. As first and second years, your magic is just beginning. Right now, almost anyone older and more experienced could easily defeat you. Don’t worry. This doesn’t mean you can’t become a great wizard or witch. After all, everyone has started where you are now. As you become older and learn more, your magic will become stronger and more focused and you will be able to defend yourself to a greater extent. At this level, your best defense is to get yourself out of the situation. The spells we are learning today will help with that.”
Erika brushed a bit of dark hair out of her face. “The best thing to do is to run and hide until either you can safely leave or someone, like a parent, professor, auror, and so on, can find you. In trying to, you may come across a locked door. The first spell that we are going to learn is Alohomora. This will open most locked doors unless magically charmed. By doing so, you will be able to get inside and then can use the second spell we are going to learn Colloportus to seal the door.” There were other spells that they could use that would be effective in hiding, but they would get to those in other lessons. It wouldn’t do to overwhelm them.
“To perform Alohomora, simply wave your wand like so,” Erika twisted her wrist a bit, “and say Alohomora. Then, the other spell is the reverse direction and say Colloportus. Think of it like a key that you turn one way to open and another way to lock. For today, you will find a partner and take turns with the classroom door. One of you will use Colloportus to seal it and the other will use Alohomora to open it. Then, you will switch. For those that are not on their turn, I would like you to work on an essay with your partner on when Alohomora and Colloportus may not work, specific spells and situations. You may begin. If you have any questions, feel free to raise your hand and I’ll come around.”
