Professor Wright was not, it had to be said, looking his never-particularly-striking best as he walked into Intermediate Charms. This had nothing to do with the conditions of his mild face, glasses, dark hair, or even today’s set of robes of indifferent quality. Instead, the problem was his ears, which were currently emitting a quantity - reduced from earlier in the day, but still very evident - of very literal steam.
It wasn’t fair, he thought grumpily. He had worked here, among adolescents, for...what? Four years, five? He wasn’t entirely sure, but nevertheless- his immune system should have been long past taking head colds and subsequently requiring Pepperup Potion.
“Hello, class,” he said, striving to sound as though there was nothing at all out of the ordinary about his appearance, despite the fact that his next comment directly acknowledged the anomaly. “As I’m sure you’ve all noticed by now, I was feeling a bit under the weather when I woke up this morning. Nasty stuff, Pepperup Potion, though it does mean you are all quite safe from catching anything, so don’t worry about that.
“We will, however, slightly change the lesson for today to something that - among other things - can also protect you from whatever bugs may be going around,” he continued blandly, though at this point he did increasingly want to laugh at the absurdity of his position. “It can also help you if you ever need to dive underwater, avoid a Stinkbomb, or otherwise use a source of clean air separate from your environment. This charm is called the Bubble-Head Charm.”
He took his wand out and grimaced slightly. “As I am not entirely sure what the result would be, in my - er - condition, I’m not going to demonstrate for you,” he informed them. “However, here is the wand movement.” He demonstrated, then lowered his wand before saying anything else. “It’s a simple wand movement - point your wand in the direction of your head - never right under your nose or in your eyes - and give your dominant wrist one firm twist to the right. For safety, I want you each to have a partner. Look at each other as you work to make sure your partner isn’t in any distress.” Of course, he’d be watching them, too. Dangerous complications were extremely unlikely, but so was going to referee a Quidditch game and abruptly finding oneself in a desert in Egypt, and that had apparently happened at least once.
“The incantation is aurecrumena - I’ll write that on the board in a moment - and your homework is five hundred words on at least two theories on how the Bubble-Head Charm can support its user for up to an hour even though the bubble is not large enough in most cases to contain that much air, and explaining which one you consider more plausible and why.” There were done which held the bubble did not actually contain air as such, just filtered it, while others believed the interior of the bubble could effectively recycle its own air for a time. “If there aren’t any questions right now, you can pair up and begin.”

Peyton couldn't believe that Ivy had not gotten prefect. It wasn't right. Her cousin was so perfect for the job and instead they'd given it to Eden . Because the world apparently revolved around Eden. And now someone who was very important to the Crotalus had been hurt because of it.
Even though Peyton (and Ryan) had been invited to the party last year, she still couldn't help being resentful. The fifth year had been upstaging her ever since she came into Peyton's life. She was a Quidditch star and despite girls playing was once being a controversial thing, it still got so much more attention than being good at baking-Peyton got two blue ribbons for her badly-behaved gingerbread people, one for best tasting and one for best decorated, the latter of which she surely owed to her best friend-or playing clarinet, which she'd never really gotten much but appreciation from Connor for, and he'd probably appreciate anyone who joined orchestra.
And now there was pressure on her to get prefect too. Just so she'd be as good. Except then she'd have to beat Jasmine, someone she really cared about. And Ivy might be upset too and Peyton also cared about her. She knew her cousin was pretty hurt and unhappy about not getting it and the Crotalus didn't exactly want to upstage her . She was trying her very best to be there for the older girl.
She listened as Professor Wright began the lesson, feeling a bit bad for him since he seemed unwell. He still came up with a pretty good lesson though the homework wasn't something she was thrilled about. Peyton could think of practical uses for it-in addition the ones named by Professor Wright, it would allow people who had allergies to be in an environments that contained their allergens, such as if Ryan, who had seasonal allergies and was allergic to cats had to go outside in the spring and summer or had to go into a house where people had cats due to his job as social worker-but the theories on how they worked weren't necessarily something that excited her. In fact, theory was probably what was keeping her from an O in some classes but she was a solid E student.
Peyton turned to the person next to her and asked. "Would you like to work with me?"

Beau eyed Professor Wright, who looked utterly miserable. What was he doing here if he had a cold and steam coming out of his ears? The Pecari honestly couldn't understand why anyone would come to work or school when they had an excuse to stay in bed, relaxing. Plus, coming out in public when you looked less than presentable was something that he'd learned from birth was a huge no-no.
And coming in front of a bunch of teenagers with steam coming out of your ears was sort of setting yourself up to be mocked and laughed at. Beau knew that his sister would be horrified. Which in his book was a good thing though he did feel a twinge of sympathy for Professor Wright.
Plus, the professor was probably infectious. Arianna was going to be irate. Beau's sister couldn't stand being sick. She was one of those ambitious people who didn't like to relax and do nothing. It was like she got all the drive in their family and there was none left for him.
People like that puzzled Beau deeply. Like, he understood that people were different and enjoyed different things but this was such a foreign concept to him. How could people want to be exhausted and stressed out?
He groaned inwardly when Professor Wright mentioned the homework. First of all, Beau didn't want any homework period. Secondly, couldn't the man, just once, not force magical theory on them? It seemed the Charms professor was way into that kind of stuff. Especially incorporating Muggle science-y things. Of course, the man had been an Aladren, but then so was Mother and she wasn't the least bit nerdy. He suddenly was full of sympathy for her too, a house where she was surrounded by people who were fascinated by the most boring things.
Beau turned to the person next to him and asked. "Wanna work together?"
