It was nearing the end of the term, and Florence felt much better. The beginning of the term had been rough with viruses attacking her immune system seemingly nonstop, but she was back and well as ever. There was some lasting effect on her body; she grew tired quicker and enjoyed her sleep more than before, but it was nothing major. Advanced was one of her favorite classes to teach. Here, they were able to talk about theory and the students in her class had to want to be here in order to endure all of the research. Since they were going to be taking their RATS next semester, she had planned out surprise quizzes to test them biweekly on the theories and subject matter they had learned or were in the progress of learning.
Today was one of those days. As soon as the students all came in and sat down, Florence waved her hand and the quizzes were distributed face-down. By now her students most likely had picked up on the biweekly pop quizzes. There were five short answer questions asking about theories and theorists. The very last question always called on one’s knowledge of how an advanced charm was used. Today, the quiz focused on the Disillusionment Charm and the Atmospheric Charm, two that they had been learning and practicing. “You have fifteen minutes,” she said, reiterating information they, by now, should already be aware of. “Bring it up to my desk when you are finished. Go ahead and begin.”
Her main goal for this class was to get the Advanced students ready for their RATS and for future careers in Charms. The sixth-years weren’t at that level yet and she didn’t expect them to be, but she didn’t want to coddle them either. Though the year might have started out a little lenient because of her illnesses, she always had high expectations for her students and always let them know she was proud when they succeeded.
“Fifteen minutes is up. Quills down,” she said when the clock struck. “If you haven’t already, bring your quiz up to me.” Once all the quizzes were in, she stood up from behind her desk and turned the blackboard around. On it was written, “Fidelius Charm.” “Turn to page 134 of your textbook, please,” she said as she wrote out the incantation phonologically.
“The Fidelius Charm is a very complex spell that we will not be able to master in two weeks of class, let alone practice. However, the theories concerning the Fidelius Charm and its properties are going to be on your exam, so take note. It is one of the oldest charms in the magical world and is used to conceal a secret inside an individual’s soul. That individual is called a Secret Keeper. You can read more about it in your textbook, which I encourage all of you to do, but this is what you are going to do today: research the history of the Fidelius Charm, its uses in today’s society, and the role of the Secret Keeper. You will also attempt to answer the question: what is it about this charm that makes it so complicated and extremely difficult? Break down the charm as best as you can. Your research essay on this charm will be due in two weeks, so please use this class time to get started. You can talk to your neighbors; just make sure the noise level is minimal. Remember to keep in mind that next term you will be working on a research project, so please start thinking about a charm you would like to research in depth and present on." With that, Florence let them begin working and went back to her desk to grade papers.
