Advanced Charms with Science [Select Sixth Years]
by Professor Taylor
For this class, Lorraine had cleared the floor of all but a few desks. Those desks were now arranged in a circle in the centre of the floor, and she herself was seated at one. This was by far her favourite class to teach. This was predominantly because Lorraine was very big on theories and experiments and ethics, and this was the class that really taught that sort of thing. Yes, she did incorporate it into her other classes, but she also had a curriculum to follow in there. In this class, there was also a curriculum, but she had two years to teach it in. Overall, Lorraine liked the more conversational set up of this class as well.
Once everyone had come in and been seated, she leaned forward a bit, folding her hands in front of her on the desk. She had a French manicure that offset her professional-looking black robes and lack of jewelry. “Did everyone have a good midterm?” Once the nods and murmurs of assent were through, she went on with the theme for this lesson.
“Since I’m assuming you did your reading over the break,” she had no doubt that this group had. “You’ll know that we are now working on applying the laws of physics, particularly Newton’s theories, at the moment, to magic. Does anybody have any ideas or conclusions that they would like to start off with?”
This lesson would flow like a conversation; each participant, Lorraine included, would respond as they felt fit, throwing their own theories and ideas out there to be argued or concurred with as was appropriate.

As soon as he'd learned that the sixth year charms students would be divided into a general charms class and a science charms class, he had been ecstatic. His fervor for the class hadn't lessoned any in the half year since Professor Taylor had begun teaching them. In fact, with Professor McFarlan leaving during midterm, the Charms professor had suddenly vaulted up to being the most important teacher on staff as far as Zack was concerned. He'd been told she was willing to take over his advanced science and mathematics lessons, but he hadn't yet spoken to her about them.
He took a seat in the circle of desks, picking one of the ones directly beside the teacher's chosen desk. He felt no embarrassment about anything she might read in his notebook - mostly because he had no shame over the fact that his notes were all in Kling-on and Sindarian; this was, in fact, a point of pride.
Nodding as Professor Taylor assumed that they had done their assigned reading, Zack practically bounced in his chair because that reading had been about physics and this was Sonora, and that still stunned him even after half a year.
When she asked for volunteers to start the discussion, Zack didn't hesitate. "I'd like to talk about conservation of matter. When we summon something, it has to come from somewhere. You can't just create it out of nothing, even with magic. Take the aquor spell. It seems like the water just flows out of the wand, but I did some experiments over break and found that the humidity in the room drops when you cast that spell, so it's actually taking water vapor out of the air. I also found the spell is more powerful if done close to bodies of water - for example, it works better in the Cascade Hall than in the Alderaanian dormitories."
