Detention [Tag: Hikaru] by Professor Aaron McKindy
A strange breed of detention it was, really.Although Aaron himself had never managed to get a detention when he was attending school, one of his brothers had. For weeks afterwards, Landon had complained of having to write lines and then having to clean the broom shed. Without magic.
From the Muggle books he had read, that brand of detention wasn't much different than that of the private Italian academy that Aaron and his brothers had attended.
As he had told Declan, though, this was not so much of a ‘detention’ as it was a study session. Hikaru obviously had a knack for picking up Charms variants. It was unfortunate that he had discovered this talent through hexing others, but that was why Aaron had told Hikaru to come to his classroom directly after supper this night. If the boy was bent on learning new spells, the least he could do was make sure that they were fairly harmless ones. Anything that the boy was taught would have to be fairly harmless, Aaron thought wryly, pushing hair out of his grey-green eyes and gazing down at the barely legible list in front of him. You couldn’t tell what Hikaru would do with anything he learned. After all, most children, even Muggleborns, would be able to tell that any spell with a stated purpose of harming others was probably not the best thing to be performing in the middle of class, in front of a teacher.
From the manner of the hex and the method Hikaru had chosen to perform it, Aaron guessed that the boy probably wanted some sort of attention, negative or no, and was probably just showing off. Consequently, the list in front of him was one that detailed several simple, showy, and harmless charms. Even the known results of incorrect spellwork were harmless for these. Aaron was not going to take any chances with the first year in question.
Aaron was working in his small office with the door that lead into the classroom open, awaiting Hikaru’s arrival. Hearing a door slam, he looked up, expecting to see the first year in question entering the classroom.

Hikaru ground his teeth as he walked up the corridor to the Charms classroom. He had been having a very day and this was not going to help him one single bit. He opened the door and shuddered as it slammed behind him, he took in a deep breathe Deep Breathes Hikaru, you can't let yourself not be composed when in this kind of situation. He put his wand in the pouch on his belt and saw the office door open. He stepped in and slowly nodded at the Professor "Good evening Professor, I hope I'm not late..."He set his bag on the ground and sat down in a chair right across from the desk, it was decently comfortable but mostly to keep peoples postures up to scratch. Hikaru noticed the list on the table and avoided looking at it, it might be something not important but he couldn't help himself. It looked like pretty simple spells but still, those were probably the only things he could do right now.\n\n

Aaron quashed the slight feeling of annoyance as the boy just barged into his office and sat down without asking permission or being invited. Lovely. Hikaru was already getting on his nerves, and the boy had hardly been present more than two minutes. At least the child was obviously interested in the list he had been working on. That boded well for the 'detention'.The office in which they were seated was spartan, with little more than a desk, three chairs, and a small stack of papers with some quills and ink on top of them to entertain the eye. There was a small bookshelf behind Aaron's desk, mostly containing binders used to organise lesson plans and one aquarium full of Shrunken pink frogs.
Although there was almost nothing in the office, although the spells in question were harmless, and although Hikaru was going to have one on one supervision the whole detention, Aaron was loathe to conduct it in his office. He stood up, motioning Hikaru to do the same.
"Leave your bag here," he commanded, waiting to shut the door behind Hikaru once the boy left his office. "Since you obviously have some knack with Charms and enjoy showing off, I would rather you show off with more basic charms than hexes and suchlike. Hexes are dangerous. Now, I heard about your fight with a second year in the Gardens," the things one could overhear at dinner at the faculty table. "and I am very pleased that you decided against using wands. However, that does not change the fact that hexes are dangerous. Most spells can be, but hexes always are. Do you understand me?"
There was no way this was continuing until Hikaru confirmed that he understood that hexes were dangerous. Aaron himself had told the boy quite a few times now, and he had no doubt that others had done the same, but eleven year old boys didn't always listen when you thought they were.\n\n

Hikaru blinked a few times, "I am sorry that I barged into your office without permission...it was very, rude of me." He stood and set his bag on the ground under his chair. Hikaru pushed his hair back behind him and tied it up with a hair tie so it wouldn't get in his way at all. Hikaru nodded "I am sorry that you heard about it as wands seemed to be a little excessive and a second year could easily defeat me, but I do understand that hexes are dangerous and should be used with caution, for that I thank you sensei..." he bowed appreciativly "It is an honor to work with you and I hope to learn much..."Hikaru was decidedly calmer now than he had been then he had been and he felt so much better now that he wasn't tense, now it would be easier to cotrol himself and his spells. He looked once again at the classroom and thought it looked even cooler at night than in the day. He looked over at Professor McKindy and asked him "I am ready to continue when you are sensei..."

OOC: Hikaru, just a few things. Firstly, it's nice to see the length of your posts increasing; keep it up! However, as I did not say anything about being irritated with the whole 'barging into my office' bit, the fact that you responded to it basically constitutes god-modding because you literally would have had to read my mind to have obtained that information. Now it was back to the servile 'I-am-so-sorry-sensai-really-I-am' deal. Aaron detested servile behaviour. His irritation with the boy was increasing by the moment, and yet he had a long hour before he could return to his desk and have a nice cup of tea. Or wander the Gardens, for that matter. The Labyrinth Gardens were by and large Aaron's favorite spot at Sonora, possibly excepting his classroom. Of course, then Hikaru began giving Aaron permission to carry on with the lesson. Again.
Unfortunately, Headmaster Bulla probably wouldn't appreciate the strangulation of one of his first years, no matter how irritating the child was. The lesson would go on, however slow and painful it would wind up being.
"I'm glad you understand the dangers of working with hexes," Aaron began, although he would believe that when he saw it. "Now that we have covered that thoroughly, we can move on to the basic charms I have decided to teach you today as part of your detention. Professor Chatterjee and I decided that an actual detention would not be much good, so this is instead a study session on the dangers and uses of charms, hexes, jinxes, et cetera, that will be repeated as often as needed before you understand fully the consequences of your actions.
"Now, the spell I want you to try is usually around a late first-year level, so it may be difficult for you. It is similar to the Lumos charm, but instead of the tip of the wand lighting, a handful of light appears instead. To activate this spell, say 'coresco>/i>'," Aaron flicked his wand in a minorly complicated pattern above his left hand and a handful of light appeared with a soft crackle. "and make that wand movement. The wand movement is probably the most difficult part of the spell, but if you get it wrong, nothing too serious will happen."
The most that would happen if Hikaru got it wrong was a stinging sensation around the tips of the ears. At the same time, the spell could be fairly impressive when cast under the right circumstances, and the light contained no heat that could cause trouble.\n\n

OOC Note: Will do Professor!BIC:Hikarus eyes widened as Professor McKindy explained his 'detention' I guess this way better than a normal detention would be who the heck am I to be complaining!
He nodded "Alright, this sounds like a really cool spell!" Hikaru thought that a light charm like Lumos that he could hold would be really cool.
Hikaru took in a deep breathe and began the wand movement slowly over his hand "Coresco!" he cringed as his ears stung with a shock. He could have at least warned me! he thought resentfully. Hikaru tried the wand movement again without the incantation and worked on it a few times. He finally decided that it was good enough and began the movements "Coresco!" a pulsing orb of blue-tinged light glowed in his hand and died, it shocked him once more.
Hikaru ground his teeth together and tried once more "Coresco!" it looked the exact same as the Professors. He smiled brightly as he held his glowing hand up above his head.\n\n

Aaron suppressed a very unprofessional surge of amusement the first time Hikaru botched the spell. He was careful to make sure that the first year did not see his amusement, though. Unprofessional it might be, but it was somehow satisfying to see the arrogant child get a good shock to the ears. It was even more satisfying when the child did it to himself. To be completely fair, though, it was much less of a side effect than what would have occurred if Hikaru had gotten some of the hexes he was apparently planning on attempting wrong. Hexes were tricky things to mess with, more so than other charms, and much nastier if you got them wrong."Good, Hikaru," Aaron said. "Now, try to change the colour of the light. You can attempt this by flicking your wand like so," here, the professor demonstrated with his own light, changing it from the white to a deep golden brown, "and concentrate on the colour you would like it to turn."
The will of a wizard was vital in any spell. One of the main problems that younger wizards and witches usually had with the simple levitation charm was the simple issue of not fully believing in their ability to make the object of the charm do what they wanted. Not that Aaron really thought that Hikaru had a lack of willpower. No, if anything, he had a hazardous surplus of the stuff.\n\n

Hikaru smiled at the Professors complement "Thanks Professor!" He listened to the Professors explanation on the color change and one of his eye brows rose slightly "That sounds cool..." he muttered to himself.He paid careful attention to the wand movement and slowly mimiced it with caution "Crecio!" his left hand's orb glowed from white to a violent blood-red That was a little much... he flicked his wand again and made the orb a shining cerulean blue, the same color as his eyes!
This is the most cool spell that I've ever done before! he beamed at the orb and changed the color once more to a bright violet.\n\n

Hikaru's portable light flipped colours so suddenly and unexpectedly that Aaron blinked. Blood red. The child seemed to have some sort of obsession with blood, if his actions with the essay and the violent colour change were any sort of indicator. Not to mention that he'd been in a fight of some sort with a second year girl. A Muggle style fight, nonetheless. That sort of obsession at an early age was more than a bit frightening. Or, rather, its potential was frightening; even Aaron couldn't manage to think up circumstances where a first year would manage to wreak any sort of large-scale havoc, even this one.
Of course, this was before Hikaru decided to begin randomly spouting words that were a mere vowel off being an Unforgivable Curse for spell modification that required no verbal cue. Perhaps it was time for another short lecture.
"It is not a good idea," Aaron began dryly, pushing back some of the hair that was falling into his face. "To improvise on spells that have already been established. It is an especially unwise idea to do so without the years of training on spell creation and the knowledge of language that is necessary to do this with a moderate amount of safety. Do you understand me, Hikaru?"\n\n

OOC: I'll make sure to do so...BIC: Hikaru listened as Professor McKindy explained the definition of spell creation and the knowledge you need to have of the language. "I will...make sure to keep note of that." Hikaru responded slowly while running a hand over his hair. He ripped the stupid tie off of his hair and let it fall lose, he hated the color that his haur seemed to be; a mix between brown and ebony black.
He wanted to die his hair another color so, he had found a few books in the library on spells and potions that could change the color or texture, type, etc. Hikaru looked carefully at his ball of light and asked the Professor carefully "Would there be anyway to make the spell brighter like if you used the spell Lumos and added the word Maxima to it...?"
He felt his pocket vibrate as Leon purred in his sleep, it was almost like he snored. Hikaru stuck his left hand into his pocket and scratched Leon behind the ears and then proceeded to scratch the back of his own head. It was itching like crazy, and he didn't understand why...maybe he was alergic to something in the room? \n\n

"It would depend," Aaron responded to Hikaru's question, "on the spell's origin and the case or declension that was originally used. I would not suggest using that technique. Try changing the colours again; this time, see if you can make the light more than one colour at once."The child was at least moderately intelligent, and he certainly did have a knack for charms. While Aaron probably wouldn't give him a late second year spell to try, even if there was one harmless enough to teach someone with such a considerable lack of common sense, Hikaru was cruising nicely through some of the frills that usually weren't taught. The light had very little practical value. It wasn't warm, tended not to work if the wizard or witch tried to cast the spell while stressed, and took up the use of one hand.
Still, it was rather fun to play with. Aaron was intermittently working on a method that would allow the light to be placed somewhere, perhaps in the sort of paperweights that were drawn to the last drawers of dusty, old filing cabinets. Gods knew Aaron had enough of them. If he could manage to make the light moderately warm as well, the frogs would be quite happy. Right now, they were working with an inexpertly charmed, Muggle style heating rock that worked very infrequently. Aaron had never been good with Muggle technology unless it could be plugged in and turned on. Obviously, at Sonora, Muggle artifacts also needed to be charmed so they could cope with the magical environment, something that he was not good at.\n\n

Hikaru nodded at smiled at the challenge "No problem, I think it would be a cool thing to do!" he waved his wand over his hand and muttered "Coresco!" it turned into a slight mix of blue and gold.He moved his wand over it a few more times and mixed gold with green, gold and red, gold and silver and finally thought that it might be cool to have an orb that was multi colored.
He waved his wand carefully over his orb and it turned into a mix of blue, red, yellow, green, orange, violet and indigo! It was like a miniature rainbow in the palm of his hand!
He thought about how the spell kind of seemed more like a party trick, but a cool party trick none the less...Hikaru whispered "Nox..." and the orb flickered away and died.
He smiled at Professor McKindy and cast the spell again making it a mix of three different kinds of pink Maybe I can make the same shade that his hats colored too. He waved the wand over his hand and kept switching between pinks until he found the right color "Go me!" he whispered almost without making a sound.\n\n

Hikaru caught on to the colour changing trick almost immediately. Which was good, because Aaron still had one more thing that he would like to show the boy how to do. He was vaguely amused as Hikaru kept playing with shades of pink until they matched almost exactly with the colour of his bubblehat. Apparently that had been as big of a hit with the students as the faculty. Enter the job with a bang, and all that. Although Aaron was quite happy with the lack of a literal bang for his entrance."You don't have to say 'Coresco' each time," Aaron pointed out. "If you concentrate on the colours you want the light to turn, it should happen without any verbal cues. Now, before our time is up, I would like you to try varying the size of the light. It's considerably more difficult than changing the colour, and you might not get it, but I would like you to make the attempt without verbal cues."
It was almost time for Hikaru to be getting back to the Teppenpaw Commons. However, there was probably just enough time for him to make a few good attempts with the size change before he went. At the very least, the boy had gleaned some sort of knowledge about what one did and did not play around with, as well as an amusing trick to show off to his classmates. A trick that was much less dangerous than hexes.\n\n

Hikaru listened carefully as Professor McKindy at the new trick to use with the light "Alright, this should be fun!" Hikaru thought of the incantation and waved his wand skillfully over his left hand. The Orb glowed a mixed shade of maroon and yellow, his house colors. He waved his wand over it carefully and watched as the orb grew a little...then it shrunk back to its normal size.Hikaru sighed, the Professor had said that it would probably not work the first time but, at least he had gfiven it a shot...
He waved his wand again over the orb and watched as it grew and grew and grew! It was amazing how big he could make it! It was the size of one of the tables in Cascade Hall now! Even though it was pure light, it was still heavy! He shrunk it down to the size were it was about as big and thick around as his head and then allowed it to return to its original form.
He smiled at the Professor and asked "Is there anyway to manipulate the shape of the orb? Like if I wanted to make it into a lantern shaped object or like a shadow of a person?"\n\n

Hikaru was most definitely inclined to show off. Not that Aaron had really doubted it much after the hex fiasco, and much less after he heard about the fight. This knowledge was merely confirmed as Hikaru began playing with the light, first turning it into a mixture of what Aaron believed to be the Teppenpaw House colours, then enlarging it drastically. Well, at least this was a harmless spell. Hikaru would demonstrate the use he would put other spells to through it as well. Aaron was surprised to find himself mildly interested in how Hikaru would use the spell. The purpose of this detention had been to beat some sense into the child, but the Teppenpaw almost seemed to be growing on him."No," Aaron responded to the boy's question. "At least, not at this point in time. Tricks like that are almost considered Transfiguration, more suited to third or fourth years than first years. You've done well today. It's about time you headed back to Teppenpaw, though."
It was getting late and Aaron still had some papers to grade, not to mention a book he wanted to finish and some charms to work on. Perhaps over the Midterm he would pick up a magically heated rock for his frogs. The pink animals spent a fair amount of time as pink bubbles in his hat, but Aaron usually unTransfigured them at night. The book he was reading gave a few interesting hints on the incorporation of Charms and Transfiguration that he hadn't used before, either....
Letting his thoughts drift off, Aaron watched Hikaru to make sure the boy didn't have any last minute questions before he went off to his House.\n\n

Hikaru smiled at the Professor and spoke sincerly "It was an honor to work with you." He bowed slightly with a nod of his head with his hands folded together. Hikaru picked up his bag and out his wand in its pouch. He took out another hairtie and wrapped it around the mid-point in his hair.As he walked past Professor McKindy and got to the door he smiled as he turned the knob and spoke with a warm tone "I had alot of fun tonight, thanks for giving me your time..."
Hikaru stepped around the door and closed it qietly, he walked down the corridor and sighed That was sooo much fun! I didn't even think it was a detention...I hope I can learn more from him... \n\n
