Kiva stood out in her clearing as she would on any other day while at the school. Except, today wasn’t like any other day. Today was the day they went off to the retreat. The fifth years were a small group and the amount of fourth years who received permission to go was even smaller. Although it meant more work for the group of students, it was much easier for Kiva and the voluntary staff to keep track of them all.
“Alright everyone.” Kiva said by way of greeting. “Before we head off to the ranch, I do have an announcement to make that some of you may already be aware of.” Kiva waited for each student to quiet down and pay attention to what she was saying. She had first announced her leaving with her Advanced students. They seemed to have taken the news well, although some looked surprised. Since they had been with her right through their entire Sonora life, she felt they would have more of a connection to her than the newer students.
And she had been right. When she had announced to the Beginner students, most went unperturbed. She couldn’t blame them at all since their short time at Sonora was plagued with Professors coming and going. Now, she wasn’t really sure how her Intermediate students would handle the news. She had been around them just long enough to make an impression, but she wondered if the other Professors that had left had these students just as untroubled as the younger years.
“This year is my last year as your Care of Magical Creatures Professor. I will be leaving Sonora at the end of term to pursue other options that my expertise provides for me. I love teaching, but I’ve decided that it’s time to move on and discover new things about the world and myself. I’ll still be reachable if you need anything, but I felt letting you all know is something you all deserve to have.”
Glancing around for a moment, Kiva clapped her hands together, “Okay, now that that’s out of the way, let’s head out.”
OOC: This is just the starting thread for the lesson. You don’t have to post to this, but if you want to, you may. The real lesson is at the Retreat.

Holly had been looking forward to this day since her very first year at Sonora. She'd tried - really hard - to get permission when she'd been younger, but it hadn't worked. When the fourth years were given the chance to go a year early this year, she'd jumped on it. She'd probably sent ten letters to each of her parents reminding them to get the permission slip in. Every day. Until she got confirmation that it was done.
Now, she was pretty sure she knew why fourth years were allowed in this year. It was Professor Kijewski's last year teaching.
"No!" she denied upon hearing the news, out loud, but not very loud. She liked Professor K, a lot, and it wasn't just because she was bringing them to see horses (though that was a big part of it). Would there be a horse ranch trip next year?
She didn't quite tear up at the thought of one of her favorite teachers leaving, but it was a near thing that required the biting of her lower lip and a lot of blinking, and she was already starting to reconsider her current plan to stay in CoMC after her CATS.
While they headed toward the wagons that would take them to the ranch, Holly manipulated her pace to fall in just behind the professor. Once the other students were distracted by loading themselves into the vehicles, Holly attacked with a quick stealth hug, that her classmates would hopefully miss (Holly was fourteen now, and while blubbering over a teacher was hardly uncharacteristic of her, it was still a bit embarrassing), and whispered, "I'll miss you."
She'd cheered and celebrated when Flatt the Awful had left, but while she'd never been a really outstanding Care of Magical Creatures student - except when it came to horses - it was much harder to see a nice teacher go. She didn't like it. She blinked hard again, trying to stop the tears once more.
She made herself smile up at Professor Kijewski, hoping vainly that if she was smiling, she wouldn't be crying. Her voice still sounded thick and choked up even to her own ears. "Have a good trip around the world." She'd never really had a lot of emotional control, and dawning adolescence hadn't helped at all. Yesterday, she'd burst into tears and sobs because Aurora's water dish was empty. She sniffed and started to feel her eyelashes get damp.
