Site canon by DH Skies

After some discussion in chatzy, the idea of a short site canon seems to be reasonably popular. I have written a draft for the canon issues I think are important below. I feel we only have three real issues where we have differences to the books, or things that are potentially confusing (blood status, Quidditch, spell knowledge).

I would welcome any additional points that people think need covering, although we are trying to keep the canon brief so as not to seem like an over-whelming rules manual. I also don't feel it should reference specific families as that will be too hard to keep up-to-date.

I would also welcome any other drafts of the points below, as site canon is a collective idea, and not just down to how I define things or the ideas I have. These ideas should be reasonably consistent with how things are currently presented on the site, rather than major changes that you aspire to have happen - those you'll have to work for IC.

There will be one week to submit proposals (either posted below of via the site email). After this, a pole will be conducted in chatzy to see which versions and which points the majority of people want included.

[INTRO] Site canon:

In general, Sonora follows very closely with the canon set out in the HP series. However, different authors have different interpretations of the books, and so we have set out some of our collective rules below.

These are malleable and subject to change. When a new idea seems to be taking over, it will be voted on by the whole site, and the canon updated accordingly.

Blood Status:

Pureblood: believes that family history and blood purity matter. Only marries others of their kind (canon example, Draco Malfoy) and stepping out line usually results in the individual being disowned or punished in some way (canon example, Andromeda Tonks, nee Black)..

Fullblood: both parents are magical but the entire family tree may not be. Happy to marry anyone, including Muggles (but may have limited contact with the Muggle world). May have grown up in the magical world (canon example Ron Weasley) or in the Muggle world (canon example Harry Potter).

Half-blood: has one magical and one Muggle parent. (Canon example, Severus Snape).

Muggleborn: apparently born to two muggle parents (though likely to have some unknown magic on the family tree). Canon example, Hermione Granger.

Squib: anyone born to at least one magical parent

Sonora canon differs from the original HP canon in the invention of the term ‘fullblood’ and the stricter definition of ‘halfblood.’ This is to avoid confusion/questions over how many generations it takes to become ‘Pureblood.’

Quidditch

Some Pureblood families find Quidditch unladylike and discourage their daughters from playing. They also prefer them to ride side saddle when flying. However, other families have no issue with it, and it is considered a matter of personal preference. There were once views that Quidditch was a corrupting influence and affected girls’ sexuality but these are now considered to be outdated.

Spells and Potions

Many of the spells in the books are written for comic effect, e.g. word play or creating humorous situations. However, we need to create a world with a slowly increasing difficulty level for each class. In order to know what is covered in each class, and what spells and potions your character could be reasonably considered to know, consult the relevant class page on the wiki. [Professors will each be expected to write and maintain a class page]

Blood Status by Ginger Pierce

Maybe I'm biased but I feel like there's a pretty big difference between the Harry Potters and Ron Weasleys of the world. I suggest:

"Fullblood" for students from families that are mostly magical but have no prejudice against them. They could be isolated from muggle society or integrated into it. (ie Ron Weasley)

"Mixed Blood" for students from families that contain both magical and muggle members and are still fairly connected to the muggle world. These could include the children of muggleborns or half-bloods, and generally magical families that have intermarried with muggles multiple times. (ie Harry Potter)

Is there actually a need to complicate things further? by Louis Valois

Just a question, is there actually a need to update the terms? Currently I believe people use 'society pureblood' to distinguish between the purebloods who are and aren't involved in society, and aren't the 'society purebloods' the only group that actually need identifying? If our current system already identifies those who are concerned about labels, do we need to introduce any more or will that just confuse people? Surely the characters covered by the suggested terms 'fullblood', 'half-blood', and 'muggleborn' won't actually use their labels, meaning they would become redundant? I hope that makes sense!

I think having the information about pureblood society would be really useful, and what you've written looks great. We could also add a section on customs (e.g. introductions, bows and curtseys?).

Depends, I guess? by Joe Umland

Speaking strictly for my own characters, I've had a few who were not society pureblood who were concerned with labels and their own status and other people's labels and such, so I wouldn't see it as redundant. Plus even if the terms aren't necessarily used that much IC (though society PBs themselves might distinguish between fullblood, mixed-blood, half-blood, and so forth in who they are more or less warm toward; my alumna Alicia, who had one Muggleborn...grandfather or great-grandfather, is likely much less offensive to their sensibilities than John would be if they or he knew his biological parents were a Muggleborn witch and a Muggle man, though the Umlands do open a whole 'nother crate of categorical apples that is too complicated to be opened in the site canon), having the concepts around for new authors to read might help clear up any confusion about why These All-Magic-Ancestors-People look down on Those Ones Over There.
