Elizabeth entered the pitch, her broom firmly clasped in her right hand. She noticed that on the other end, two girls and a boy were standing around talking, or something, but she paid little mind to them, as she had enough problems to deal with on her own. She mounted and pushed off hard, her heart fluttering as the familiar rush of wind caught her by surprise. Elizabeth could solve anything when she flew, letting the whipping wind soar away with her troubles.
She circled the pitch a few times, her mind registering in on autopilot mode. Elizabeth's brain needed to focus on her current situation instead of something so easy for her to do, like flying. What am I going to do? she asked herself, but for the first time, she didn't have an answer. She wanted to keep her family's honor intact, but she also didn't want to loose the friends she'd gained since her arrival here at Sonora.
Mia. Stephen. Sorrel. Sally. They were all her friends, but they were also deemed by her family's standards "unsuitable". Elizabeth wasn't sure that she had the courage or the heart to just toss them aside to try and break back into a society she hadn't been completely involved in since her parent's death five years ago. She'd been raised by her parents then her aunts and uncles to know that she was a Lavine, and Lavines were beautiful, honorable, smart, and extremely athletic. She had also been taught that she was expected to uphold those precepts, and so far everything had been smooth sailing except for the whole honor thing. If her family knew her friends, they'd flip, and probably disown her.
Time was of no object to Elizabeth, and pretty soon she couldn't tell if she'd been flying for minutes or hours. Subconsciously Elizabeth had started running the drills her brothers taught her: flying patterns, dodging maneuvers, and the like.
I need direction, she thought wistfully, I need to choose a path, fast, or else neither side will be willing to back me up.
Chrissy didn't follow Tally or Arixios into the air, instead her eyes caught a girl flying high into the sky behind Arixios.
Walking with her broom in her hand, Chrissy climbed the stands until she was at the very top. She sat and watched the girl fly; it took her a few moments to realize that the girl was Elizabeth. She had met her during Transfiguration.
She looked worried, lost...lonely. Chrissy watched as she dove, manuevered, circled, around the pitch. Chrissy watched her for awhile until she decided to fly up to the girl.
Flying quickly, she caught up with her easily. Her blue eyes full of concern, she shouted at the girl to get her attention,
"ELIZABETH! ELIZABETH!" Chrissy steadied herself and copied the moves that Elizabeth did so that she didn't lose her, "ELIZABETH, IT'S ME, CHRISSY!" Chrissy continued to call to the girl waiting for her to acknowledge her.\n\n
Hearing a faint noise in the back of her mind, Elizabeth suddenly realized that someone was tyring to get her attention. She stopped in the middle of a barrel-rolling drill, and looked out to see who it was. Oh, it was Chrissy. They'd met before in sme class or something... Transfiguation, was it? Yes, that was it...
She reversed so that she was facing the girl and let Chrissy continue flying towards her. Elizabeth sighed inwardly, debating whether or not she coudl trust Chrissy. She knew that the Mathers were purebloods, a good family no doubt, she'd remembered meeting one of them at a party sometime, years ago.
"Yeah?" she asked as soon as Chrissy was in close hearing range. \n\n
Chrissy, who had finally gotten Elizabeth's attention, frowned at the less-then-happy acknowledgement she had recieved.
"Sorry, didn't mean to bother you it's just that you seem so sad. So lonely." Chrissy hadn't meant to say the last part, it slipped out of her mouth before she even realized it. "Is everything alright? Do you need help? Do you need something or someone? Maybe I could help you?" Chrissy rambled on. She was so unsure when it came to stuff like this, this was more of Tally's area, she was more comfortable with people's emotions as she could read them.
Chrissy sat on her broom, brows furrowed, a slight frown playing on her lips. Her eyes still held the look of concern and worry as she watched Elizabeth.
She might not know this girl well, but she still worried and cared all the same.\n\n
She quickly untied her black hair from its now completely messed up bun and reassembled it. She couldn't have herself come off as unaware of her appearence! That would be like murder in her family! If there was something she'd actually liked about her family and their ideals, it was presentation. Elizabeh loved being dressed up nicely, especially when she was little. But that was irrelevant now, as she felt bad she'd given such a poor reception to Chrissy.
"No, it's me who should apologize, I'm sorry for not giving you a proper reception!" Elizabeth smiled, "I'm always glad to see people who are looking out for someone other than themselves." She added, mentally brushing away her problem momentarily. \n\n
As Chrissy watched Elizabeth fix her hair, she had to resist all urges to roll her eyes. Who cares how your hair is? There are far more important issues at hand.
Chrissy continued to frown at Elizabeth even after she apologized. She hadn't answered her question and Chrissy wasn't going to let her off that easily. She qucly waved off the apology,
"No need to apologize, I probably would have done the same." She gave her a small smile before continuing, "Now stop stalling and tell me what's wrong!" Chrissy hadn't intended to be blunt or rude, but the fact is, if she didn't, Elizabeth probably would have continued to ignore the subject at hand.\n\n
She sighed, this time, she allowed it to just all flow out. Elizabeth decided that anytime was good enough, so she started in talking about her problems.
"Well, I've been going through a bit of a crisis lately, nothing life changing or anything, I'm just questioning if I'm going in the right direction with my life. I've always though of myself as fair, not caring at all about the whole lineage mania the rest of my family likes. Lately, I've just felt like I owe to my parents and to the rest of my family to do what they want, and live my life "right". Since my parents are gone,"
she took in a deep breath, half because she needed it to breathe, half because she needed something to support her while she entered the domain of her parents,
"I feel like I owe it to them to be friends with people the rest of my friends approve of. Examples A&B: O'Reilly and Jackel."
Elizabeth flicked her ice blue eyes in the flying boy's direction. She didn't really know him, but if her family had any say in the matter, she'd have to be friends with him in a snap. \n\n
Chrissy snorted. She couldn't help it. She had to deal with these same exact issues. Her family, though they believed that everyone is equal, hid them because of the 'rules' of being Pureblood. The only exception they ever showed was to Tally and her family.
Tally's mother was like another daughter to Chrissy's grandparents. When she was thrown out of her family, Chrissy's grandparents did what they could for her. But she wasn't theirs and so they allowed it.
Chrissy believed that everyone was equal, but she wasn't suppose to show it. Here at Sonora, however, she could do as she pleased. Her best friend is a half-blood, and though they are more excepted amongst Purebloods, they still aren't equal to them in some standards. She had made friends with muggleborns and purebloods alike. She understood how difficult this was for Elizabeth, even if Elizabeth didn't believe her.
"Elizabeth, I know of T.J. and I know that he values blood over everything else. I'm not so sure about Arixios, but who's to say? Jenna and I are both Purebloods and we believe in the same things, as far as I can tell anyway." Chrissy paused here and took a breath.
"Life is hard for us when we don't know whether to follow with the path that our families set before us or follow our hearts. It's something that you will decide when the time is right. For now, do what you feel is right. Do what you want to do." Chrissy paused again and looked hard at Elizabeth.
"I don't know your situation, Liz, and I won't pretend to. My parents believe that everyone is equal, but they won't ever say it. They follow these stupid rules, play these stupid games because they have to. Because it's what's expected of them. Of me..." Chrissy could feel the tears welling up in her eyes and she tried to blink them away.
"I don't know the path that I will follow. I don't want to lose my family, but I don't want to sacrifice my friends either. I'll know when the time is right for me. For now, I'm going to follow my own path and I recommend you do the same." Chrissy smiled, the tears were still there, but her smile was genuine. She would make her own path in life until she was ready to choose the path that would lead her into the future forever condemning her to a life without her friends or without her family.\n\n
For the first time here at Sonora, she'd met someone who actually had the same kind of problems she was faced with. Chrissy was just like Elizabeth in that respect. She didn't know which person to respect more: herself, or her family's wishes.
"I can't live without my family." She said, tears of fear welling in her sapphire tinted eyes, "My brothers are everything I've had for the past few years, and my Aunt Rose and Uncle William, the ones that took turns watching over us, are like the parents I never really got to have. I can't totally blow them off, I just can't. I couldnt' live with the guilt I'd feel if after all these years I show disdain for their ideals. I think when it comes right down to it: my family has been there for my brothers and I when no one else was. I know that I owe them for all of that. Besides, friends come and go, but family is there always... I can't loose that. Not again."
She hastily wiped off the tears that trickled down her cheek. Elizabeth felt a little shaken up. Afterall, she'd just told Chrissy her life's problems.
That's a nice opener for a friendship: Hi, I'm a basketcase, I'm afraid of the world leaving me behind, oh by the way, my name is Elizabeth! \n\n
Chrissy felt a sort of pain as Liz spoke of her family. Her path was already chosen, at least for now. She would chose the path of the Purebloods, a path that Chrissy was destined to follow. A path she resented more than anything.
"Than that is the path for you to follow. Until you find a common medium. Or when our world finally finds peace within itself." She smiled sadly. If that were to happen it would not be in their lifetime.
"I'm sorry, Liz. I'm sorry that this is so difficult, for the both of us. I don't know how to chose between the ones I love most. But you have a duty to your family, to your parents, and though I cannot truly believe your parents would have wanted you to be so wrecked by all this. So upset, it's for you to choose, you and you alone. I only hope it's the choice that makes you happy." Chrissy paused and looked over at Tally and Arixios flying. At least she was allowed to have Tally. If she were forced to choose between Tally and the world, she would choose Tally as she had been the only friend she has ever had.
Turning back to Liz, she realized that didn't have a friend like Tally and her family probably never gave her an option for someone like her. She frowned at Liz for a moment,
"Whatever you choose, Liz, you'll always have a friend in me." and she meant it. \n\n
Elizabeth blinked away the rest of her tears, so grateful for the words she had just heard. "Whatever you choose, Liz, you'll always have a friend in me".
"Thanks so much Chrissy. You're a good person." she said, meaning everyword. Elizabeth sighed and flicked her eyes over to where Tally and Arixios were flying around. "You'd better get back and catch up with them. I'll be fine, I need to practice before the regular season starts up." she added with a smile.
"Thanks again Chrissy." Elizabeth said over her shoulder as she flew off to the other end of the pitch, starting back again on her barrel-roll dodging drill...
Chrissy's right. she thought, I have to go the "pureblood" path until the world finds peace, when finally we can stop this silly game of blood hierarchies. \n\n
