'Chocolates and flowers' isn't really very specific by Arnold Carey

All men are eternally in debt to their mothers Arthur had said, sounding deeply amused, when the package had arrived, and while Arnold had no idea what, if anything, he had been quoting and what whoever had first said it had been thinking when they said it, he knew it was true for him. He could never repay his mother, not if he lived a thousand years and spent all his time just focusing on that. If the whole rest of the family lived that long and focused on just that. Just when he thought he was in trouble, real trouble, he’d found out that Mother had anticipated what he would and would not think of and had made arrangements to save him from….

…Well, he didn’t really know, exactly, what happened to guys who forgot Valentine’s Day, but he was pretty sure he didn’t want to find out anymore this year than he had last year, though he had remembered earlier than February 12th that February 14th was coming and important last year and hadn’t sent her a panic-stricken letter which he hadn’t even written when she put a box of chocolates and a letter chastising him in the mail.

Never again, he promised himself. It didn’t matter that Valentine’s Day was two days after his and Arthur’s birthday and had never, for that reason, been something much noticed in his house. He would remember it well in advance next year, and after that, it wouldn’t matter because he would be able to go somewhere and buy something himself…though he would still remember earlier, of course. It wasn’t right to do anything else.

Still, he was glad his mother was a little annoyed with him on Fae’s behalf. That was a good thing to come from all this, besides his resolution to do better. This made him think Mother might be beginning to get used to things, even be willing to accept Fae as part of, if not her immediate family, at least the alliance of Careys-by-marriage, though he guessed he could be optimistic and hope for the other, too.

“Good morning,” he said, approaching Fae at breakfast and proffering the box of chocolates with his left hand. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Arnold had his wand in his other hand, and used it to conjure a small bunch of flowers. He frowned, though, when his attempt to present them to her with a flourish revealed that he’d ended up with a small cutting from a hydrangea instead of miniature roses. “I think roses are, uh, traditional and all, but if I say that was deliberate because they match your eyes, would this be a good time to formally ask you if you’d like to go to the ball with me, too?” he added hopefully, hoping both that this was the proper thing to do and that he would succeed in making the mishap with the flowers funny.

They sum up the post vaguely well though. by Fae Sinclair

Fae was not going to make a fuss about the day. She had continued to remind herself of those thoughts for the last couple of days. With Arnold’s birthday having been a couple of days ago, she knew that he was likely not thinking about the significance of today and she would be understanding of that. Or pretend to be. She had never really been in this situation before to really know how she would handle it. But, if her mother taught her right, she’d simply smile through it. It wasn’t really like she could blame him for not thinking of it. They had been dating for over a year, but they kept things relatively quiet. People knew they were together, but they weren’t showy about it. Valentine’s Day was meant to be showy and since Arnold had such difficulty expressing his feelings about anything, Fae was sure this was a holiday that he would avoid.

So, she would be good about it and not mention it. If he forgot or didn’t want to celebrate, she would have to accept that. Fae wasn’t sure how it was for her siblings when it came to their spouses. She was fairly certain that Victor doted upon Shelby as though she were a Goddess, so Valentine’s day was likely to be huge in their house hold. Jaiden was far more subtle out of all of them, but he was also considerate and from what Fae had seen over the holidays that she had spent time with them, he cared for his wife. He might not have made a show out of the day, but he certainly would have done something to celebrate it. And her father gave her mother flowers every year. Then again, her father tended to give her mother flowers often because she enjoyed them so much. They made her happy. Arnold was raised with a bunch of boys, Fae wasn’t sure how often his mother obtained flowers just because.

“Good Morning.” Fae greeted back, her eyes lighting up at the box he was handing her. “Happy Valentine’s Day, thank you!” She exclaimed happily. Fae didn’t eat chocolate very often due to her restrictive diet, but every now and again, she’d allow herself a cheat day. Valentine’s Day seemed like a really good excuse for a cheat day. She was really surprised (which, she might have felt guilty about considering it meant she fully believed he wouldn’t have done anything for her) by the gift and very happy too.

Watching Arnold, Fae suppressed a laugh when his flowers seemed to fail him based on the look on his face, but his comment to recover from it had her lose her restraint and a soft laugh emitted from her as she took the flowers. “That’s a very sweet compliment, Arnold, and of course I will go to the ball with you.” Even if they hadn’t been dating or betrothed, Fae was certain he was the only one she would have wanted to go with.
