Notice: Sign Ups for Baking Club! by Waverly Canterbury

Since her third year had begun, Waverly had been easily excited. She was planning on doing a lot of things this year and wasn’t sure if she was going to have enough time to commit to everything. But she would make time, she was sure of it. Writing out the schedule for the Baking Club was fun, but she knew that this year she would need a VP and a Secretary at the very least. She was glad the school provided the other things that they needed. It was also helpful just knowing magic. It made baking at school a lot easier.

Waverly had spent all night working on the signup sheet. She wanted to make it perfect. It was one thing if other students saw it, but now that her younger sister was here, she wanted her sister to have the best of everything. Just remembering her first year at Sonora, Waverly knew exactly how her younger sister felt. She hadn’t had an older sister to guide her like Wendy did now, but being at a magical school was pretty exciting in itself.

The Cascade Hall was always the perfect place to put a signup sheet in Waverly’s opinion. Not everyone always looked at the bulletin boards in their hurry to get to class or something. It was also just fun to see how many signups she got every time she came into the hall. So when she went down to breakfast, before sitting down with some other Pecaris, she posted the sheet up where everyone could see it right when they walked in.

If you're interested in learning how to bake or want to have a place to bake your own things at school, come to the Baking Club! It will be in the Potions classroom at 4 p.m. on Thursdays. We'll be baking cookies, cakes, brownies, and a bunch of other things, so come if you're interested! To be an official member, or just to show your interest, please write your name and your year down on the sheet. The official meeting will be in two weeks! On her way to Crotalus table, Heaven was interested to see a signup sheet for Baking Club. She had remembered hearing about it last year, but she had been too engrossed in her music. Plus, there had been that annoying Lucien D’Alesandro. He was such a pain! She had spent an enormous amount of effort trying to avoid him, which had failed miserably. This year, she had decided to venture out more, which was also good since her parents wanted her to work on her social connections. After all, social connections were the key to ensuring a bright future.

Baking club would not only help with social connections, but it would also help develop life skills that would be found desirable. It was definitely a win-win situation. Pulling open the flap of her messenger bag, Heaven pulled out a quill from the pocket. She was super organized about her school items and hated anything being out of place so it was easy to find one so quickly. Writing on the paper, she put:

Satisfied, Heaven replaced her quill and went to sit at her table. She couldn’t wait to start learning how to bake. Okay, granted, she would probably have house elves to do all her cooking, but this would be a good opportunity. She would actually learn how to bake and learn to distinguish better quality items from poor ones. Plus, she was looking forward to eating all those tasty treats and hopefully making friends too!

Clara Abernathy, Second Year

You know I'm in! by Clara Abernathy, Second Year

Clara made her way down to Cascade Hall from her dorm and was glad and a little sad to be back at school. Glad because she'd get to learn cool new things and sad because it meant time away from Dad and Lucy. Oh well she thought to herself as she made her way into the hall. She had had a fantastic summer having spent some of it in Oregon with her cousins and the rest of it in Europe visiting her grandparents. Her first stop on the Grandparents tour was Bourdoux, France where her mother had been from and where that part of the family still lived. She got the best presents ever from them every year and had always wished that she and her dad could visit. With his busy schedule that was usually impossible. This summer her dad had gotten a few months off having done most of his work ahead of schedule. So he and Clara packed their bags and away they went.

Her french grandparents were wonderful people and their chataeu was enormous as far as Clara was concerned. She spent most of her time there roaming through Grandpa Henri Portier's library and horse stables with him. She spent the rest of her time playing violin duets with Grandma Danielle. Her grandmother still had extrememly nimble fingers and taught Clara a few new notes. She was sad to leave them, but they still had her dad's parents to visit and they lived in Stratford, England. She and her dad boarded the train from Nice to England and got off at Kings' Cross. They caught one of the transits from there to the airport where they were picking up her older cousin Arista.

She had begged to come with them and Clara's dad relented. They had rented a car for their trip around England and picked it up from the airport as well driving from there to Stratford. They spent a few days at the Abernathy ancestrial estate with Grandpa and Grandma Abernathy and then a few days at their smaller estate. Arista had managed to talk Clara's dad into taking them into London for some of the tours and she and Clara and even Grandpa Abernathy had a blast. It was one of Clara's better summers and she hated in a way to see it end. Now that she was back at school she was looking forward to signing back up for the Baking Club if Waverly decided to bring it back.

She glanced around the hall and was very glad when she spotted the sign up sheet like she had hoped. She immediately walked over and after pulling a quill pen out of her bag she scribbled her name on the paper.

Seeing that she had accomplished her goal (at least for today) she headed over to one of the tables and sat down. She piled her plate with pancakes and sausage and as she sat down to eat she couldn't help thinking how this was going to be a good year.

My social life will be delicious by Henny B-F-R

Henny was hoping the her newly founded book club would solve some of her social woes but that didn't mean that she was adverse to expanding her horizons in other ways, so long as they were not Quidditch, animal-based or otherwise dangerous. The baking club sounded fun. Nothing involving people who were not 100% competent at magic using their magic could be guaranteed free from disaster but the baking club had been running for at least a year and she hadn't heard of it resulting in any serious injuries.

She didn't have a lot of experience in baking, as it wasn't something they did a lot of at home. She could imagine people being shocked at that and whispering, in hushed tones, that they supposed that was one of the consequences of not having a mother, poor child. She hoped they would keep said hushed tones hushed enough that she would not have to point out the idiocy of their argument to them. Her experience with baking amounted to helping with birthday cakes for the other members of the family when it was there turn but that was about it, and they tended to keep the cake pretty simple. Then they would try to overcompensate with attempts at fancy decoration, which usually far outstripped their icing skills. The cakes never looked as good as they had been in their heads but you could usually tell what the designs were supposed to be and they'd never had a bad tasting one.

When she saw the sign up sheet in the hall, she happily signed her named (well, enough of it for people to identify her – she'd be late for class if she wrote the full thing) and set off to her first lesson with a spring in her step, looking forward to her new social activities for the term.

At the beginning of each school year, Thad was careful to look out for the important sign-up sheets that appeared in various places around the school. The first was the Quidditch sign-up that David posted promptly in the Aladren common room. The second was the library assistance sheet in the library that Thad hadn't seen yet. A fourth almost got added to his annual list but Henny's announcement had not given the indication that sign-ups were necessary so he had merely added the first meeting of the book club to his increasingly full schedule.

The third sign-up sheet he watched for appeared in the Cascade Hall, which he thought was rather appropriate given that people came here to eat and it was for the baking club.

Last year, his association with Waverly's club had been a fulfilling experience, for both his mind (which was learning a new skill) and for his stomach (which was getting delicious treats). He saw no reason not to continue refining his skill and, more importantly, having a steady supply of brownies.

Also, Derry had a surprising talent for it so it was good to see his otherwise mediocre cousin excell at something for a change.

He didn't see Derry's name on the list yet, or the Anns, but they had all sounded intestested in it on the wagon, so Thad took the liberty of signing them all up. Given some rumours he had heard about the twins in their flying lesson, it would be good to keep them occupied in more fitting activities for their gender.

Aubrielle Reece Thornton had a problem. Okay, maybe she had more than one problem, but there was one problem at hand. She’d decided she was going to do Quidditch afterall, she wanted to start with the Book Club, and she also wanted to keep up with Baking Club. Then there was classes and homework too. There’s not enough hours in the day… she thought, feeling her head swim around with all the stuff going on.

Walking into Cascade Hall one morning, she spotted the signup for Baking Club. “YES!” she said and happily jogged over to it and put her name down on the list.

She walked away from the signup and grinned from ear to ear. She couldn’t wait to see Waverly again, she was soo excited! “Baking Club, Baking Club, Baking Club!” she chanted excitedly. “Thursdays, Thursdays, Thursdays! YES!” she went on, as she spotted Waverly by some Pecari’s a few tables down from where the Teppenpaw stood.

The red-head walked over to her friend and sat down in the empty seat beside her. “Just signed up, I’m so excited!” she said when the others stopped talking. She loved to talk herself, but she wasn’t rude. Especially to her friends and Waverly was one of her first friends!

Goober! by Amira Thornton, Pecari

Fourth year brought Amira into a completely new chapter in her life, even though she was still in the intermediate classes. This was the first year of her Assistant Captaincy, and she was determined to win. She was more determined then ever before, which was saying something. Nothing will stop us. Nothing! she thought as she walked into Cascade Hall one of the first few mornings there at Sonora.

Walking in, like she usually did, helped the Pecari to see a sign she wasn’t quite expecting. “Baking Club Signups, huh?” she said as she shrugged. It won’t stop me from helping Pecari win in Quidditch. she thought, adding her name to the list underneath her sister.

Brielle must be in here…? she thought as she spotted the Thornton red hair right next to Waverly. She smiled at her sister and Waverly. Walking over to them, she sat down on Bri’s other side. “Neat sign up.” she said to Waverly about both the Quidditch Team and Baking Club. “I’m game.” she added to her as she poked her sister by her ear. It wasn’t anything against her sister, but Bri had so many things going on at the same time that poking drove her nutty and Mira knew it. There was something about being able to get your sister’s goat that made the one getting the goat smile. The Assistant Captain wasn’t sure what that was, but it worked…

Brielle flailed around and Mira laughed at her. Bri practically fell off her chair, but the Pecari caught her. “Okay, okay… Enough, I get it…” she said, laughing some more. “You goober…” she added, as food appeared in front of her.

“Nice!” she added, digging in to the French Toast with a grin on her face as visions of Quidditch Cups danced in her brain.

Waverly

That's officially my new favorite word by Waverly

Waverly was worried as always about who would sign up for the club, but the turn-out last year had been really good. Now she had some competition with other clubs going on, but she thought that anyone could be in more than one club. Waverly herself was planning on being in all of them, or at least try to be. She loved books and she loved horses and she loved baking. The only thing holding her back was her already insane schedule and, if she made the Quidditch team, Quidditch.

All of these thoughts were going through her mind when Brielle came by. Waverly was always happy to see her and she was encouraged by her friend’s enthusiasm for the baking club. “Yay! I’m excited too. Round two of the baking club!”

Waverly was going to continue when Amira joined them. Amira was the Assistant Captain this year, and Waverly wondered if she should talk to her about how nervous she was. But she knew that, since Amira was really into Quidditch, she’d be kind of biased and Waverly would end up trying out. She was still kind of on the brink of that, but she really did enjoy Quidditch. She just didn’t know if she enjoyed it as much as people like Amira did.

Watching the exchange between the two sisters was really funny, and Waverly laughed. Brielle could always make Waverly laugh in some way. Thinking about sisters made Waverly look around to see if her sister was around anywhere, but she wasn’t at the table. She was probably still sleeping, that sleepy-head. Waverly was still so glad that Wendy was at school with her now. They both got to be magical and that was the best.

The word “goober” made Waverly giggle, and she repeated it before giggling again. She didn’t even know such a word existed, but it seemed to make life a whole lot better all of a sudden. “That’s going to be my new favorite word,” she told them. “Goober!” She smiled, green eyes bright suddenly. “Brielle, you have to sign up to be Vice President,” she told her excitedly. “I want to have people have actually offices in the club. It would be so great if you could! Then we could plan all these meetings together.”

Waverly’s brain immediately reminded her of what she had wanted to say beforehand, and she quickly digressed. “Speaking of meetings, I was thinking of making a pie one day for the club. We could do it as a group project, like, some people cut apples, other people make the crust, other people can shape it; stuff like that. Do you think that would be good? My mom and I made apple pie once I think before I came to Sonora. I’ve got the recipe and everything! Plus apple pie is my favorite, and it’s so good when it’s still warm and fresh.” She grinned. “What do you guys think?” she asked, posing the question to both sisters.

It's a good word by Amira and Brielle

“Yay! I’m excited too. Round two of the baking club!”

“I know! I’m so excited!” Brielle said as Amira came up to them.

Amira wanted to help support her fellow Pecari Housemate, Waverly Canterbury, in her Baking Club, even though she realized that each year she grew in school there was more and more homework, even more responsibility given to the students. She wasn’t afraid of responsibility, never had been and she wouldn’t start now. She looked both at Brielle and Waverly and smiled back towards them as she poked Bri by the ear. Mira chuckled at the response from her sister. She wiggled and flailed around in her chair and the Assistant Captain’s chuckles turned into pure laughter.

When Brielle almost fell off her chair, Mir caught her. “Okay, okay… Enough, I get it…” she said, laughing some more. “You goober…” she added, as food appeared in front of her. “Nice!” she added, digging in to the French Toast with a grin on her face.

Waverly giggled at the word ‘goober’. It seemed that she hadn’t heard that word before? Brielle smiled and looked at her friend to see her reaction. Waverly repeated the word again and B smiled wider at her friend. It was clear to the twelve year old that her friend had never really heard that word used before and she’d enjoyed it.

“That’s going to be my new favorite word, Goober!”

Amira noticed Waverly’s smile and how bright her green eyes got, but didn’t say anything. Bri set there a few moments, trying to put herself back where she should be, mind-wise from her sister’s little pokes, allthewhile listening to her older sister and Waverly talk around her, eating the food on their plates when Waverly spoke again.

“Brielle, you have to sign up to be Vice President, I want to have people have actually offices in the club. It would be so great if you could! Then we could plan all these meetings together.”

“Me? Vice President?” Bri asked, incredulously. “Really?”

Amira looked at Brielle’s complete surprise and couldn’t help but guffaw at her sister. “Yes you, you goober-head! You’re the only Brielle here in the room, even in the whole school, aren’t you?” she asked, in kind of an exasperated yet, enjoyable tone.

“Speaking of meetings, I was thinking of making a pie one day for the club. We could do it as a group project, like, some people cut apples, other people make the crust, other people can shape it; stuff like that. Do you think that would be good? My mom and I made apple pie once I think before I came to Sonora. I’ve got the recipe and everything! Plus apple pie is my favorite, and it’s so good when it’s still warm and all. What do you guys think?”

Amira’s mouth watered at the idea, she’d loved apple pie as a younger girl, but hadn’t gotten to enjoy it too much as she grew up. Brielle grinned even wider and her eyes lit up the room.

“YUM!” was B’s response as Amira nodded emphatically.

“That would be really nice.” Amira added, smiling at Waverly. Somehow the two younger girls had done it again and made her more motherly and happy about life, it was weird, but it was something the Pecari could get used to… She’d have to after all, as Assistant Captain she’d have no choice in the matter.
