Oh, Teppenpaws! [HoH speech] by Head of House Lilac Brockert
From the staff table, Lilac looked on the student body. There were many familiar faces by now, but there were of course the first years with whom she was not yet acquainted. Of course, she did know two of them, her niece and nephew. Amusingly, the two were polar opposites, but actually, they weren’t technically related. Carrie was Seth’s niece and only hers by marriage, whereas Marcus was biologically hers.The rest of the first years, the brunette didn’t really know, though she thought there was another girl somehow related to Seth, her husband. In any case, she was looking forward to getting to know the rest of the new students. She loved her job, and her favorite part was interacting with the kids.
As the Sorting began, Lilac leaned forward, keeping a strong eye on the first years, both to see where her family members ended up and also to count how many turned yellow. As Teppenpaw Head of House, she wanted to know how many to expect. Five were Sorted into her House, including her nephew. “Marcus is Teppenpaw,” she whispered happily to Seth, though the tone changed as she added, “and Carrie is Crotalus.” She could only imagine how Ryan felt.
The thirty year old applauded for the Head Students and Prefects, though biasedly for Kate Bauer as a Teppenpaw. She listened to the new staff members being announced with hopes of befriending them. She remembered her first term teaching, how nervous she had felt. Making a friend had been a great way to settle in, and she did miss that friend quite a lot—not seeing Cleo around had taken some adjusting to at first.
The song was sung, food was served and consumed, and then it was time to familiarize the first years with their new homes. Lilac parted ways with her husband and sought her new House members. “First-year Teppenpaws!” she called melodically. “Over here! This way!”
Once there were five yellow children about her, she smiled. “Are you ready to see your new home?” she asked rhetorically. “Just follow me, and away we go!”
