A Breakfast Berating. by Autumn Collins

Autumn looked glumly down at her plate, her pancake only a quarter eaten so far. She was completely miserable. Why hadn't she gotten prefect? Why wasn't she good enough? The Crotalus had worked so hard for the position, her grades absolute perfection last year. Autumn was intelligent, organized and responsible. She wasn't the most social person on Earth, but it wasn't like she was mean to people, or so withdrawn that she didn't have any friends. It simply wasn't fair that Sam Bauer got it when he also got Assistant Quidditch Captain. Autumn (or Nic) should have gotten prefect, though Nic never seemed like the type who would have even wanted to be.

The fifth year felt completely worthless. What was wrong with Autumn that they had felt was so horrid? There was something about that was flawed and she tried so hard to be flawless. To be perfect.

Instead she was disgusting. Completely without value. Autumn would be forgotten, be nobody. She was nothing and she always would be. She looked down at herself, hating every inch of her body from the top of her head to each and every toenail. She especially hated the bulges she saw under her shirt. Autumn had never noticed those before. Where had they come from?

She noticed the pancake she'd been eating and eyed with distaste. Of course! That was where those disgusting bulges of fat had come from. They had to go. Autumn wanted them gone now and she was going on a diet immediately. It wasn't uncommon for girls her age, especially pureblood girls to do so. They did so they could find an appropriate husband. Autumn would like to get married someday. To have someone who loved and cared for her.

But that wasn't going to happen while she was like this . It was no wonder nobody had gone to the dance with her last year. Autumn had felt just as desperate about the whole thing as Nina had, but for a different reason. Her cousin simply had wanted a person to dance with for the opening dance. The Crotalus really wanted someone to like her.

However, why would they? She was apparently completely and totally undesirable. Autumn was certain they had seen, had noticed the bulges before she had. Why had she been so blind? Why hadn't she noticed before and done something before the dance? Well, Autumn had noticed and was going to do something now . She pushed the mostly uneaten pancake away and took a grapefruit instead, not even bothering to put sugar on it.

Why so glum, chum? by Samantha Hamilton

Samantha was finding fifth year tolerable so far. She could manage her classload (she was taking all the offered subjects, but hadn't added any independent studies to her list) along with the prefect duties, and without Quidditch practises to squeeze into her schedule, too, she thought she was in a decent position to make the transission from CATS student to RATS student at the end of the summer. She still had a while to prepare, of course, and she obviously hadn't actually passed any of her CATS yet, but Samantha knew she would; she was smart. Not just book smart - in fact occasionally her essays could be improved upon a little by further research - but her natural curiosity seemed to make her adaptable in class, too. Admittedly, sometimes this could be more of a hindrance than a help (like that time she and David had distracted themselves by attempting to transifugre one object between them at the same time), but generally speaking her logic and creativity contributed to her certainty of exam success.

With all this contributing to a positive mood, Samantha had managed to continue the morning running regime she'd initiated in the summer vacation, which only served to further her bouyancy. She had, in fact, already run round the labyrinth, showered, and done her daily routine of preening and charming to the point of reflection perfection before she headed down for breakfast. Spying Autumn, Samantha strode over, her cute heeled boots making delicious click-clack sounds across the marble floor of the Cascade Hall.

"Hey," Samantha smiled at her friend in greeting as she took the seat opposite. She noticed Autumn had taken up a grapefruit, and the Aladren followed suit, selecting the citrus fruit and carefully slicing it open on her plate. She'd also noticed that Autmun wasn't looking cheerful as she might, so following her greeting, Samantha added the query, "What's up?"
