He had sort of become it by accident, without fully understanding how he’d been persuaded to assume personal responsibility for an entire group of students any more than he understood how his wife had gotten him out of his book room and back into the educational field in the first place, but John enjoyed being Head of Aladren. His students were orderly, so he didn’t have to experience the daily stress of being Aaron, and usually did very well in classes, so he didn’t have to experience the daily stress of being him in a situation where people he was acting as a surrogate parental figure for were doing poorly and he had to occasionally report that to his boss, especially since he now had a new boss.
He couldn’t say he was delighted about that, between the inner Crotalus that had allowed him to live with his mother and then compelled him to marry Allison and the inner Aladren which at least slightly resented anything that distracted him from his studies, he had never been fond of change of any kind, but Aladren obtaining the second-largest number of students did a great deal to make him feel more optimistic about the year. Having an Aladren Head Boy for the second year running was also very pleasant, and he thoroughly expected Mr. Carey to not only be an excellent prefect, but also to uphold the Headship tradition once Mr. Nash took his final bows at Sonora. It was a good time for Aladren, and that meant, to an extent, that it was a good time for John Fawcett.
Once the feast began to break up in earnest, he called the new Aladrens to him. All boys; he wasn’t sure what to think of that. Girls were the source of most of the school’s drama – he had not been too sorry to see the back of Miss Brockert last year – but Aladren girls usually weren’t, and it was rare for such a large group of males to be together here, leading him to feel…wary. Optimistic, because it was an optimistic night, but wary. Instead of showing that, however, he smiled genially at them.
“My name is Professor John Fawcett,” he said. “If you turned blue this evening upon drinking the Sorting Potion, you are an Aladren, and I am your Head of House. If you did not turn blue, then you should seek out one of my esteemed colleagues, who can better direct you to the place you should go.” When no one left, he nodded and gestured for them to follow him. “I will show you the way to your common room. I expect most of you will enjoy it.”
