Classes were starting up, school was as nice as ever, and Jessica had a new head scarf! The Pecari was a super happy girl today. Her head scarf was a pretty tie dye one, with all sorts of colors on it. She wore a tie dye t-shirt to match, blue jeans, and rainbow flip flops.
Jessica had even discovered something super cool. One of the kids she had helped over the summer had given her mom an article from the internet, which her mom had then owled to her. It was a discovery of epic proportions, because apparently Patrick Stewart had had Alopecia as a kid! That’s why the actor was bald all the time. Seriously, that was some of the most exciting news ever. If anyone told her she couldn’t do something because she was bald, she could totally prove them wrong now. Because Patrick Stewart was famous.
The second year bounced into the Cascade Hall happily for lunch time. She still had homework to do, unfortunately, but a Potions essay wasn’t going to bring down her mood! Jessica sat down at a table and began to fill her plate when she noticed that someone was sitting alone.
Well, that’s not right. How can they have super awesome days if they’re alone?
With that in mind, the twelve year old threw her backpack over her shoulder, picked up her plate, and moved to the seat across from the Lonely Person. She set down her backpack and plate, grinning at the other student.
“You looked lonely, and that’s just not okay, so I thought I could eat lunch with you!”
Demelza felt very lost. One thing, people kept calling her Mel like that was totally normal, and it wasn't! She would get lost when trying to talk to people, trying her hardest to remember their names. Even if they had told her their name after the accident, she still would end up forgetting it. Maybe the fall did more long-term damage to the Pecari third year? Demelza knew that she didn't need any more mental damage done unto herself (she already had problems with paying attention in class), so she tried hard not to be as accident prone. However, that was hard for a girl like Demelza who was extremely clumsy.
The brunette skipped over to the Cascade Hall to eat lunch, falling down the stairs as she skipped. "Ouch," she muttered as her palms stopped her fall. Luckily, she tripped on the third step because she forgot that it was crooked. She thought that it was slightly at an angle, but maybe it was just her imagination? She scrambled back to her feet, and noticed that her knee was already bruising. She shrugged: she had been in much more pain before, especially when playing Quidditch with her seven brothers. Hey... she remembered that! The fourteen-year-old started to grin, realizing that remembered something that happened before her accident in Africa! Cool!
No longer skipping in case she hurt herself again, she walked the rest of the way to get her lunch. Demelza wore white capris that cuffed just below her knees and a fitted Woollongong Warriors (Austrailia's Nation Quidditch team) tee-shirt. Even though it was fitted, Demelza could easily wear a uni-sex tee-shirt: she was hardly curvy at all and had a pretty flat chest. Not that this ever bothered her, she liked herself just the way she was. She wasn't someone who really cared about beauty. Her shoes were old, gray sneakers that probably should have been trashed, but her mom didn't like to waste things and told Demelza that she had to wear them until it started getting holes in it. There were already four wholes around where her toes were, but Demeza didn't care much. They hadn't fallen apart completely yet.
She wondered, as she sat by herself, if maybe she could get new shoes if her dad got better business as a wand maker. Not many new students went to him this summer to buy a wand, which didn't help the Eagles. Actually, if it weren't for Jamie's fiance's little sister, who ordered a very expensive and very unique wand that cost like a million galleons—or something like that—, her dad's inventory would have decreased greatly from last year. He hoped that her would continue to get orders from rich purebloods, but that was only because Jamie hadn't broken the news to his dad that Lucy's parents didn't know that that was where Lucy got her wand from. Even if Jamie told his dad this, though, Demelza was certain that he would still be very optimistic, because that was just the kind of person he was.
She grabbed a steak sandwich from the middle of the Pecari table and munched happily on it. Then—Demelza did not see it coming—someone took a seat next to her.
“You looked lonely, and that’s just not okay, so I thought I could eat lunch with you!” The girl with the totally awesome clothing said to her. Demelza swallowed the bite she took, not realizing that she looked lonely. She hoped to God that she she didn't know this girl already and looked dumb asking her who she was.
"Okay!" She replied, enthusiastically. She smiled at the girl, and introduced herself. "I'm Demelza, or Mel if you want to call me that," Demelza continued to smile at the girl, and added, "I love your outfit, by the way! It's totally groovy!" Demelza took another bite out of her sandwich and tucked a chocolate brown strand of hair behind her ear, excited that she had someone to talk to.
Because the other girl replied enthusiastically, Jessica found herself even more excited than before. She was so happy that there was someone there to talk to! Mealtimes were totally boring if they were spent alone. Sure, a person could study or finish their homework during mealtimes (the twelve year old was pretty sure that was called multitasking), but they were in classes almost all day. Why not take the time to have fun and talk to people when they were able to?
Jessica added a steak sandwich to her half full plate of macaroni and cheese, smiling brightly at Mel. “I’ll call you Mel, then!” she said happily before biting into the sandwich. After a moment, she swallowed, then continued to talk. After all, it was totally impolite to talk with your mouth full.
“I’m Jessica! Um…I don’t care what you call me. Something nice, I guess.” Jessica nodded to herself. “Yeah, something nice. I wouldn’t want a mean nickname, though I don’t think you’re the type of person who would do that!” She smiled again and almost blushed when Mel complimented her outfit.
“Thanks!” Jessica replied brightly, adjusting her scarf with a free hand. “My mom sent the scarf to me, and I just really wanted to match.” She ate more of her sandwich, deep in thought about conversation topic type things. Um…
“I’m in Pecari! Are you in Pecari?” Jessica paused, frowning. “I think you’re in Pecari, but I’m a second year. So…what year are you?”
