The staff and students had gathered together for their final meal together of the year, or forever, in the case of seventh year students and several of the staff. It had been an interesting end to the year. For the most part, Sadi was thrilled for her colleagues that their lives were progressing them away from Sonora: Kiva had a family to look after, Amy would be returning to professional Quidditch full time, Simon had a career in Vegas, Drake would be in a position to spend time with his now grown-up daughter, and Lorraine had been offered a magical engineering post she couldn’t refuse. Nevertheless, Sadi was near distraught to let so many of her trusted faculty leave at the same time. She had already begun work on filling the many vacant positions, and she would have to do interviews over the summer months. On the other hand, it would be exciting for Sonora’s students to experience a fresh, new faculty. With any luck the new transfigurations professor would stay at least until midterm.
With so many of her colleagues completing their final meal within Sonora’s walls, Sadi felt compelled to make mention of this. Standing from her seat at the staff table, Sadi tapped her goblet to call attention. “Good evening,” she greeted her school. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for a wonderful year, and to wish our graduating seventh years all the best for their future.” Sadi raised her glass a little in toast, encouraging others to do the same. Allowing for any noise to dissipate, she continued, “I would also like to wish good luck to the faculty who will be leaving us this term to embark on new adventures. Would the students please join me in bidding farewell to Kiva Kijewski, Amelia Fox, Nicholas Wolfe, Lorraine Taylor, Paul Simon Tellerman, Drake O’Leary, and Stella Nelson.”
Sadi began to applaud, and was soon joined by several of the students, some of whom thought it appropriate to whoop and yell in addition to clapping. When the noise had died down, the Headmistress smiled at her staff, with the quiet addendum, “You will be missed.” Then she turned back to the students, knowing they were eager to enjoy a final feast. She had one more thing to cover. “I’m sure you will be eager to know the outcome of the House points competition,” she said. Not leaving them waiting too long, Sadi told them, “In joint third place are Crotalus and Teppenpaw with two hundred and fourteen points each. In second place, with two hundred and thirty points is Pecari. Which means that in first place is Aladren, with two hundred and fifty two points. Congratulations.” Once noise from celebrating this fact had died down, Sadi could hold the students from their meal no longer. “Without further ado,” she proclaimed, “food is served.”
