Short Reunion by Irene Liddowe and Josh Warren

Josh!

Do you feel like we haven't talked in ages? I don't know about you, but I think that we have been a little distant lately. I talked to Raye once or twice, but you, my dear cousin, are now required to meet me in Cascade. Now. We're going to do some catching up. Fill me in cuz!

Much love,
Irene

Josh sighed as the owl flew off, resenting the prospect of getting up early on this Saturday morning, but he really didn't mind. It had been ages since he'd talked to Irene. They use to talk all the time. She did most of the talking, but whenever he did talk she listened. Really well. He wasn't sure what he was really going to talk to her about, but he was sure that she had something to say. She usually did. Not too much had been on his mind lately. Okay, unless you count Quidditch try-outs, Laurie, and The Cecily Conflict. Josh pulled a comb through his black hair after pulling a t-shirt and jeans on. With a wave goodbye to Zane, he was headed towards Cascade.

Sometimes Irene felt special that she was one of the few Josh really spoke to. Her younger cousin was like her little brother, just as the rest of the Warrens were like her little sisters. Irene took a bite of the bacon in front of her, her blue-green eyes focused on her most recent book. It was a tale of some random guy and some random girl and the reader's anticipation of the fateful result of their tense relationship. She loved these books. They always gave her a feeling one would normally get when watching a wedding. They might be fictional characters, but Irene was happy for them, weird as that may sound. She was distracted from her book when a familiar figure took the place beside her.

"Josh!" Irene exclaimed, giving him a one-armed hug. "What's going on? How's your whole Quidditch thing going?" Josh gave a shrug, but at Irene's stare he decided to elaborate.

"There's one beater spot open and Raye and I are competing for it," he told her. "It's not weird for us or anything. If she gets it, great. I'll be a little sad, but that's great for her. I know she thinks the same for me. We've been training and stuff, but we're not going to be able to help each other out at try-outs. But this is all I've been thinking about for a long time. My toughts are pretty predictable. What about you? You and Brett still... I don't know what you call it. "Together"?" Irene smiled a little to herself and a little to Josh.

"Yeah. It doesn't feel like it's been that long, but it has. It's actually pretty cool," She said with a smile, "You like any of the Crotali mistresses?" Josh made a face at her. This was one of those times he liked to stay silent. He didn't tell anyone about what he was thinking in regards to girls. That was weird to him. Girls talk about that stuff all the time (or so he figured), but for him to just chat with Irene about Laurie... He couldn't see it becoming one of those totally normal convorstations.

"I'll pretend you didn't ask that so I don't have to give an answer," he said, taking a bite of her bacon. Irene gave him a hurt look.

"Aww, Josh! You use to tell me everything! What happened? Do I embarrass you?"

Josh rolled his eyes. "I'm not giving names," he stated simply. Irene didn't looked pleased, but seemed to understand that he didn't want to tell. She let out a sigh and sat back in her chair.

"I think I can guess. From what I've heard, there is only one girl that would seem normal enough for you to consider," Irene said, smiling at the pink flush that crept up her cousin's cheeks. "Don't worry I won't say anything... But maybe you should. Not a serious talk or something, but a hint here and there, you know?"

Josh nodded and glanced around for the time. He had to get some practice in today... Irene seemed to notice his distracted manner and held up his bag to him.

"Go practice. Send Raye my love. I'll see you around!" She gave him a quick hug before he left. Josh waved as he departed and headed back towards the commons. Irene felt a bit better about the distant relations they had this year. Josh was a good kid. She propped open her book and returned to her breakfast, not noticing as someone took a seat beside her. It wasn't until they began speaking that Irene looked around.

"Oh, hi," she said, "Sorry, I missed that."
