Chloe went into the MARS Sports Room for her daily workout when she discovered someone else was already in it. The room was set up like a boxing gym with a ring in the center and bags or weights surrounding it at various sections around the room. It was clearly a room to mimic that of someone’s memory. Chloe looked around for a moment to try and figure out who was already in the room. She found him, one of the younger students, as he was pacing the ring with his hands near his face. He was practicing boxing.
Chloe had seen him sitting at the Pecari table with some of his classmates, but she didn’t know him from beyond that scene. He looked very serious though and Chloe didn’t really want to disrupt him, but this was the only time in the day that she could get in a workout. He noticed her though and stopped in his tracks, giving her a sour look. Chloe smiled and waved, “Hey, do you mind if I use some of these bags to work out on? I won’t bother you.” The boy shrugged, which Chloe took to mean ‘yes’ and then went back to whatever it was that he was doing.
Picking up the tape, Chloe began the process of wrapping her hands to protect them from bruising or breaking. She had only used a bag a couple of times when she was over at Travis’s so she wasn’t all that great at it, but Travis said that once you were used to it, it could be quite an effective workout. Chloe thought that she might as well keep giving it a try. She positioned herself in front of the bag and began the process of attempted to bunch the bag.
Jax tried to go back to practicing his footing and jabs, but the movement of the blonde was distracting to him. He looked over at her to watch what she was doing. When he figured out what it was that was distracting him, Jax frowned.
“You’re doing it wrong.” Jax said, having finally seen enough of that catastrophe to put an end to it. Chloe looked around to him with a questioning look. The kid had stopped working on his boxing to watch her hit the bag. “How you’re positioning your body is wrong.” He said again. Chloe stood up properly and shrugged her shoulders at him. Jax sighed and extracted himself from the ring. “Here.” He said as he made his way to her. She was much taller than he had expected, they were practically the same height, Jax only having a couple of inches on her. “You plant your feet like this to give your body a balance and to take on the blows. It’ll also give you more force for each time you draw your hand back for a punch, like this.” Jax demonstrated, giving the bag a hard tap.
“Oh, awesome.” Chloe exclaimed, mimicking his stance and trying it for herself. It really did make a difference with the intensity of her hit against the bag. “Thanks!” Chloe said with obvious appreciation. Jax just shrugged. “I’m Chloe.”
“Jax.”
“I appreciate the lesson, Jax! I’ll make sure to keep it in mind.” The boy nodded and went back to the ring to leave Chloe to her bag. Even after only a couple of shots, Chloe could already feel her arms getting tired. No wonder people who did this kind of routine came out looking pumped. Eventually, though, she got through the awkward part of it and found a rhythm. “Hey,” Chloe called to the boy, taking a break for a moment. She had been at it for over half an hour and she was already covered in sweat. “You should do lessons more often. You’re good at it.” She meant it as a compliment, but the boy only frowned at her.
“No thank you.” Was the only response he gave before going back to his own routine. Chloe laughed but left him alone. Not everyone enjoyed the spotlight.
