The day before the ball [tag Elly, Meredith] by Echo Elms (in collaboration with Saul Pierce)

Echo dropped his bag on the ground and slid into his usual seat next to Elly. It was going to be today. Saul would make sure of it. It was really going to happen. Today. At lunch. With Elly. The thing with the date and the ball and the going and the togetherness. Today.

Saul flumped down and grinned at him a most conspiratorial way that Echo avoided noticing or returning. Meredith arrived. Everyday conversation picked up. Classes. Quidditch. Family. Summer. Saul caught his eye and nodded. It was time.

"Whoa!" Saul blurted suddenly, pointing at the table's wood grain, "Princess Leia!"

Echo leaned over, acting as though this line was not rehearsed.

"Wait, no. False alarm." Saul looked at him expectantly. "Not a princess."

After a second or two he whispered, "Now."

Right! Echo straightened up a little, spluttering, "Right. Um."

"Speaking...," Saul prompted.

"Yeah! Um. Speaking of princesses," Echo said and turned grandiosely to Elly. "Princess Elly, if you would grant me the honor of your esteemed presence at the ball tomorrow evening, I, sir Echo, would be the very visage of all frivolity and happiness. Will you think on it, m'lady?"

His eyes flicked briefly to Saul, who was giving him the biggest, most obvious A-okay sign known to man. Echo grinned, red-faced, at his potential date.\r\n\r\n

Fuzzy time is the greatest by Elly Eriksson

The Hall was fairly empty as Elly began loading her plate with salad. “Why do you think lettuce is so wrinkly?” she asked the boys as they arrived and took their seats.

Lunchtime continued on as normal – well, normal until Saul and Echo started being more than usually weird. Elly exchanged a confused glance with Meredith while she waited to discover whatever it was they were up to. She didn’t have to wait long.

“Princesses Elly,” Echo said, once he’d found his voice, “if you would grant me the honor of your esteemed presence at the ball tomorrow evening, I, Sir Echo, would be the very visage of all frivolity and happiness. Will you think on it, m’lady?”

Elly was grinning so wide she thought her face might split. Despite what Brett had said all those weeks ago, Elly had been certain that, seeing as the event was only a day away, Echo wasn’t going to ask her after all. Her immediate thought was ‘Echo’s been spending too much time with Saul,’ but she had to admit it was kind of fun being addressed with such pomp and circumstance. Completely oblivious to Echo’s discomfort, Elly grinned at Meredith before turning her attention back to Echo and replying, “Thank you, Sir Echo. I would be delighted to accompany you.”

Isn't it? by Echo Elms

“Thank you, Sir Echo. I would be delighted to accompany you.”

That was a yes, right? Echo ran the line through his mind a couple of times as his grin turned from sheepish to relieved to whatever it was next... probably, the very visage of frivolity and happiness.

"Egg-cellent," he beamed. Had he seriously been afraid she'd say no if he asked? Seriously? Well, as long as it was all a big joke there was no danger. Still... w00t! Not only was the most amazing prankstess in the school was his date, she was also... well, she knew she was his date, didn't she? That was a step up.

And that left the next challenge. Dancing. On the dance floor. With people. And he was ready for the with people part, if not so much the dancing part, but in the dancing part he would, at least, not be alone.

We should make an official decree of greatness by Meredith Lail

Meredith hurried to Cascade Hall after making sure Pence had his lunch. She usually didn’t have time after her own and sometimes she just plain forgot. School could be so distracting!

“Hey guys!” She greeted with her usual cheer as she slipped into her seat. They fell into the usual rhythm of conversation until Saul changed things abruptly with an odd exclamation. Who was Princess Leia and how was she so small Mere couldn’t see her on the table? She caught Elly’s confused look after eyeing where Saul was pointing for a moment and then said it was a false alarm.

And then Echo followed suit with Saul’s weirdness, but Echo’s weirdness made more sense. She understood where he was going and looked at Elly to see her reaction. Elly grinned at her and Mere mirrored the look. She could tell both of them were really excited to go to the ball together. Mere still didn’t think it was that big a deal, but if it was to them, then she would be excited for them. She just couldn’t wait to go to a party she would definitely enjoy despite being dressed up.

Mere made a big show of pretending to hold out a parchment and quill and spoke aloud.

“And Sir Echo and Princess Elly had the most wonderful time at Sonora’s ball and lived happily ever after. The end.” She finished her dramatized cursive writing in the air. “That’s how your next story for Novelling Fury should go.” She laughed.

And have a celebratory Day by Elly

“I think that’s how Saul’s story ended last year,” Elly replied to Mere, with a nod towards Saul. In fact, Elly had high suspicions that the aforementioned story was the reason for Echo’s manner of proposal. Nevertheless, they were all going to the ball together (all coupled up, as Brett had said they would be), and Elly had no doubt it was going to be an excellent evening.

“You guys will help me with the prank, won’t you?” she implored the three of them. “Just a quick hand movement while a person’s not looking and you drop a pill in their drink,” she said, knowing full well how awful that sounded, but reassured by the fact she knew the tablets were harmless. “You can just stick to the lower years if you want to avoid prefects.” Elly didn’t mind pranking prefects herself, but she couldn’t deny that the lower years provided less of a deterrent – especially since a large number of them were in her ever-expanding circle of friends.

“I suppose you can tell Matt and Briony, if you want,” she said to Mere and Saul. “Are we all going to meet in the Hall?” Elly would have suggested the commons, but she knew that wouldn’t work for Saul (although he might want to desert them completely in favour of Briony), and if Danae wanted to join them then she’d likewise have to meet Josh somewhere else anyway.

Or Evening, perhaps? by Echo Elms

"Hand waving?" Echo put in, "Nah. I was going to float the pills into the drinks. Check it out."

He shook a pill-sized veggie out of his veggie wrap, slid his wand down his sleeve, and subtly wingardium leviosaed it over to Meredith's plate. It was such an elementary spell he hardly even needed to think about it.

"Lalala!" he laughed, jiggling his arms a little to make the broccoli stem do a little dance on Mere's plate before letting it fall over.

"The other way I'd get caught so fast. I'd like knock over the drinks and everything."

Or both even! by Mere

"Oh," Mere said when Elly mentioned Saul's previous story. "You must be a seer or something." She kidded.

Elly asked them again about participating in her prank. She was excited about the idea when she first heard and she was even more excited now that the ball was looming ever closer. There was no way she would change her mind. She wanted to see what it would be like before tomorrow even came. She made a mental note to tell her brothers about the little mint sized drink fireworks if they didn't know already. She remembered that description was the first thing that made her really excited apart from it being Elly's idea. A mental note didn't exactly help though since she had forgotten last time she tried to remember.

Mere watched Echo float a small vegetable to her plate and clapped as it danced about.

"That's a good idea. Especially for those who's specialty is tipping drinks." Mere grinned and winked at Elly. She took out her wand and floated the veggie above Elly's head making it do little somersaults in a halo shape. "That answer your question?" She asked her. "Of course we're gonna help. I'll ask Matt if he wants to help too and we can meet in the Hall. We'll drop a little surprise in all the drinks of anyone who's not looking. Oh! And of course we can't forget about our new Head Boy and Girl. We ought to save something special for them. As congratulations."

Then Mere's curiosity began biting furiously at her mind.

"Hey, you think we could try one now?"

With fireworks! by Elly

Elly was thrilled by her friends’ ideas of levitating the pills – they had thought it out better than she had herself! “You guys are amazing,” she told them, laughing as they made vegetables somersault all over the place. “Okay, wands are definitely an option,” she said, after poking her tongue out at Meredith. She didn’t mean to spill her drink all the time, it just sort of… happened.

Far from being intimidated by prefects, Mere wanted to surprise the Head Boy and Girl with an unexpected treat. Elly raised her eyebrows in response. “I’m sure we can think of something,” she replied, with no small hint of mischief.

“Hey, you think we could try one now?” Mere suggested.

“Yes!” Elly replied, then after a split second, she amended her answer to “No. Well, I mean we can, but they’re all up in the dorm. But if we’re finished here we could go up to the commons and do a test run, if you want. Coming?”

Having finished her salad, Elly stood up from the table, knocking her glass over in the process, spilling the dregs of her juice right where she’d been sitting a moment earlier. “Don’t say anything,” she warned as she hastily headed out of the Hall.
