Time to party! [Tag Merry & Echo] by Elly Eriksson

“Ooh! Scrambled egg!” Elly leant forward to help herself to breakfast, hitting her drink with her elbow in the process; luckily the vessel remained upright. “Eggs, Merry? Echo?” Having dished out food to those who required it, Elly sat back down and took a swig of juice. She drank too fast and choked a little as she gulped for air. “I’m okay! Can you pass the pepper, please, Echo.”

Elly’s excitement from earlier hadn’t yet diminished; she’d woken Meredith (and the other girls in the dorm) with an exuberant ‘Happy Birthday’, and shortly thereafter presented her with The Big Book of Quidditch Quizzes and box of bubblegum in all sorts of wild flavours. Somehow Elly had composed herself sufficiently to get dressed and make it down to the commons, where the girls met up with Echo before venturing to the Hall.

Still more chipper and bouncy than was usual even for a Pecari, Elly became further excited by the arrival of the post, as hordes of owls swooped into the hall, each searching for the designated recipient. “Bet there’ll be loads for you today,” Elly told Meredith. Sure enough, a moment later a couple of birds each dropped their cargo on the table. Elly offered one some of her scrambled egg, but it didn’t seem very interested, and flew off again with a haughty flurry of wings. “Told you,” she said.

Elly shifted the closer parcel out of the way, noticing as she did so that it wasn’t addressed to Meredith after all. “Hey, this one’s for me,” she said aloud, but to nobody in particular. There was only one thing Elly had ordered that would arrive in a parcel as small as this one. “Hey guys,” she whispered excitedly, trying to catch both Meredith and Echo’s attention. “This is it! The stuff for the ball! It’s arrived!”

That's my favorite time by Meredith Lail

The morning started off exactly as any good birthday should. A loud birthday greeting from Elly woke Meredith, followed by gifts. She took the gum and put it on her side table, grabbing a piece and placing it aside from the rest so she remembered to take it with her later. She took the Quidditch book and did a quick flip through the pages. She couldn’t wait to start working on it.

“Thanks so much!” She jumped out of her bed and hugged Elly, mostly ignorant of whom their scene woke. After dressing in her favorite jeans with the hole at her left knee and a green tee shirt, she went with Elly to the common room, too excited to walk normally so she did back walkovers down the hall, to get Echo so they could go to breakfast together.

Mere’s eyes fell on every sweet thing on the table. Breakfast was usually eggs, toast and some kind of meat to get her through to lunch, but she wanted something special on her birthday. She shook her head with a quick, “no thanks” when offered the eggs and then reached for the plates of pastries and baked goods. She grabbed a large muffin with glazing on top and started picking it apart as she ate it. Elly pointed out that the owls arrived and Mere looked up with a smile as a few of them landed near her and her friends. A few boxes piled up near her and her smile widened. She didn’t need tons of gifts. She loved her birthday all the same.

Meredith was drawn to a colorful envelope first. It was from her parents. She tore it open and saw a card. She began reading it while breaking off another piece of her muffin and putting it in her mouth. She split her attention between the letter and Elly’s whispered announcement about the arrival of what she got for her big plan for the ball.

“So let’s see. What’d you get?” Mere asked, excited to know more about Elly’s plan yet unable to pull her eyes from the letter. But she was distracted from her own question when she covered her mouth in awe and then let out an elated scream. She checked the envelope again like the letter instructed and saw that the present was no longer concealed. Three tickets to a NQL game sat within. It was a dream come true! Realizing her outburst probably halted whatever might have been said or was about to be said, Mere looked back at Elly half laughing.

“Sorry. You first.”

Re: That's my favorite time by Echo Elms

Meredith's birthday had sort of crept up and exploded into being. Echo didn't really do birthdays very well. They were fun and all, but giving presents required remembering them and having funds or at least craftiness. He was okay with craftiness in class, but he had trouble thinking of ways to use it outside. Thus, it probably came as no surprise to anyone when all he gave Meredith was a Snickers bar with a ribbon tied around it and a big "Happy Birthday." This was actually pretty good for him. On Elly's last birthday, she had gotten a pack of 6 pencils with Star Wars characters on them.

The owls came and went and Elly turned a package in her hands. Echo leaned over at her suspense inducing words, wondering what Elly was up to this time. He'd been sort of mum about the ball, largely because he wasn't sure if it was still cool to be interested in it if you were male, you weren't having a crisis over which girl to ask, and you were not as secure in your masculinity as Brett Hodges (it just was not wont to be as into it as Brett--not even for Brett). Still, he'd managed to get the inkling that Elly's growing excitement about the ball had nothing to do with dresses and dates. She was scheming, and the time of the big reveal to the inner circle had arrived.

"Ooo, should we guess?" he asked, and proceeded to do just that. Random, crazy guessing. "Um... swords? A CD of Monster Mash? Hmm... a tiara with a miniature disco ball that will turn everyone into dancing ninjas?"

Meredith screamed in elation at whatever was in her birthday card, making Echo wish he'd been paying her more attention, and then said to Elly, "You first."

Echo laughed too, shaking his head. "Nah, unh. You can't go eeeeiii!!! and then say, 'oh no, sorry, you first.' What is it?" He stood up a little and leaned over trying to see.

Mine too! by Elly

Elly was pleased that her friends seemed to be excited about her prank for the ball. Not that she had any reason to suspect they wouldn’t be – they had, after all, helped out with pranks in the past. Echo played at guessing her plans. “Better than swords, better than a CD … not so cool as ninja dancing, but maybe I could look into that,” Elly laughed. Her prank was less invasive than any of Echo’s ideas – they all sounded cool, but Elly liked to keep her tricks fun and safe for everyone.

She was about to reveal her secret plans when Meredith made a strange squeaking noise, the sort that could only indicate something both wonderful and exciting. Elly sat back a little, thoroughly agreeing with Echo that Meredith should go first – not only because she had squealed, but also because it was her birthday, and Elly wasn’t going to talk over Merry’s birthday surprises with stupid pranks for some occasion sometime in the future. She placed her parcel back down on the table in front of her; she would come back to later, maybe after Mere ha dopened all of her birthday post.

“You first,” Elly agreed, grinning as Echo tired to get a better look at whatever it was that had Meredith so excited. “Go on, what’ve you got?”

I knew we were friends for a reason by Meredith

It looked like Meredith was outnumbered two to one. Both Elly and Echo wanted to hear her news first. Well she wasn’t shy about sharing if they wanted to know now. Mere still wanted to know what Elly was up to. If she had been listening closer to what Echo was saying, since it sounded like guesses, she was sure she could’ve pulled a ‘but ____ sounds much cooler, so you go first.’ All in due time she supposed, though her foot began tapping the floor restlessly. Either way, they were all getting good news.

“Okay, okay.” She put her hands up, giving in to the majority rule. “Well,” she started slowly with a huge grin and reached her hand into the envelope. She lined the tickets up to look like she was only holding one and continued her piecey sentence for the suspense effect. “For my birthday, my parents got me,” she slowly brought up the tickets that still looked like just one, “a ticket to see my favorite Quidditch team in the whole world, the Nashville Negators, playing this summer in Nashville!” She paused there with a giddy laugh as if it were the end of her exciting news. Heaven knows just that much would’ve made her life, but there was more.

“And,” she continued after the beat, “they also managed to get me,” she fanned out the three tickets so they were all visible, “two extra tickets to bring two friends. Daddy said one of his co-workers had tickets, but couldn’t go so he gave them to him. Now who am I going to bring?” Mere looked playfully between Elly and Echo.

I thought it had something to do with juice by Elly

OOC: Sorry Echo for continuing without waiting for you to post, but it's fairly important that this post goes up sooner rather than later. I've tried to leave it open for when your comp is up and running, so you can jump right back in!

BIC:

\r\nMere’s birthday present was the best – Elly could tell she was really excited about going to see the Negators play. She grinned enthusiastically at her friend, until Meredith fanned the tickets out to show she was actually holding three of them. Elly’s eyes glittered; she’d never been to a professional Quidditch game before (she didn’t think Mere or Echo had either, come to that). Of course there was always the chance that Meredith would want to take some of her friends from back home, but judging by the way she was currently glancing teasingly between the two of them, Elly was fairly certain that she and Echo were going to be taking a trip to Nashville that summer.

“Awesome!” Elly exclaimed, switching her gaze from the tickets to Mere and then back again. She tried desperately to reel in her excitement. “You must have some really lucky friends out there, huh,” she said, with a grin and a wink. Wow, a professional Quidditch game with her two best friends in the summer! What could be better?

After the euphoria from the birthday girl’s excitement had wound down, Elly found herself unable to contain her own news, despite her promise to herself made only minutes ago that she would wait until Meredith had finished opening presents. “Okay, now I have to tell you mine,” she said, and took up the parcel once more. Lowering her voice a tone or two, Elly held her parcel in front of her, and looked mischievously between her two friends. “I ordered these a few weeks ago, especially to use at the ball,” she began. “It’s genius! And almost completely untraceable!” Not wishing to keep her friends in suspense any longer, Elly started to explain the product. “Okay, there are these little tablets, and they look just like breath mints – they even come in breath mint packets so if teachers find them we won’t get into trouble! But they’re not mints, of course – they’re like fireworks for drinks. Some of them turn your drink rainbow coloured, some give off purple smoke, and some of them make your tongue change colour!” There were other effects too – Elly had ordered an assortment from one of the many catalogues to be found lying innocently around the Pecari commons. “They’re totally safe – no weird additives or anything, just your everyday potions ingredients, but made into tablet form.” Although she wanted a fun prank, Elly wasn’t going to risk the potential debacle of some students having an unpleasant reaction to her party trick. As it was, the product claimed to be side effect free, and so Elly felt it was safe. Still, her friends’ opinions were of utmost importance – she wouldn’t go along with it if she didn’t have their support. “What do you think?”
