Lately, Tristan had been thinking a lot about his future. His dreams of playing pro-Quidditch had started dying long ago, and had finally been finished off by his cousin last year. Now he was planning to become an Auror. Honestly, it was probably a more realistic-and one thing he'd always been was rather realistic- ambition anyway, even if he had played on a school team and been good at the sport. There were people playing on their house teams all over the country, how likely was it that they'd all make the big leagues?
Besides, it was something Tristan was certain that he'd be good at. He was excellent at Defense Against the Dark Arts and though he wasn't that interested in academics, wasn't too terrible at the rest of his classes. He'd dropped Care of Magical Creatures after CATS but kept everything else because he needed them all, even though he would have dropped Potions otherwise. Serena might have liked it, and Ryan's wife Sophie loved it, but he found it a little dull. Not enough action for his tastes.
Action was something Tristan needed. He wasn't the sort to sit around reading. If others liked that, fine, but it wasn't for him. Even though he didn't play Quidditch like he'd always wanted-though he still loved the game-he went flying, he did the archery club and he was an amazing duelist. The Crotalus had spent his entire time at Sonora transferring his energy into other things though he still wouldn't stoop to doing anything Muggle.
However, having a career wasn't the only important aspect of one's future. Tristan also had to make a good match, one that brought connections to his family. As the Spaulding heir, it was especially important for him to do so. Fortunately, there was an appropriate girl in his class that he actually really liked. A lot. Nellie Vandenburg was beautiful and charming and fun and an ideal lady. She'd make a good wife someday. His family would certainly more than approve and even think she was an ideal match for him for more than just connections. He certainly did.
That was why Tristan had sent her a message to meet him in the Water Room today. There weren't a lot of options for dates at Sonora. It was here or the Gardens. It wasn't what Nellie deserved, she deserved a five start restaurant because she was a classy lady who deserved the very best. However, right now this was the best he could do and he hoped it was enough for them to be able to move things to next level. At least Tristan managed to get some red roses and some gourmet foods, all specially ordered from the finest florist and gourmet food store in all of magical Denver, two of his mother's favorites.
He sat patiently-he wasn't always the most patient person but this case it was so so worth it-waiting for Nellie. Tristan couldn't wait to see her.
The past several years had been frustrating simply waiting around for a stupid boy to show interest in her. Neither Leo nor Tristan had made any progress, though Tristan was much more attentive than Leo. Still, nothing had happened and Nellie refused to pani...il the day she graduated. After all, she was a respectable, lovely young witch with a lot of promise, not to mention pureblooded as well. She was probably more cultured than any of these American witches anyway. What was there not to like about her?
In any case, Nellie had been using that time and energy to focus on her studies. After getting decent grades on her CATS, she was hoping to improve. She didn't plan to work, but at the rate her family's finances were going she was afraid she was going to have to. After hearing news about her mysterious half-brother inheriting pretty much all of her paternal grandfather's fortune, Nellie's parents had started to save a lot more, meaning no more large, frivolous gifts or random trips around the world. Even though both of her parents were in the medical field and worked long hours, it wasn't going to be enough to support their current standard of living.
That whole weird drama going on her family with finances, however, was something Nellie was never, ever going to tell anybody. That wasn't exactly her marketable trait and she could only hope for some second or third son who was only looking for some pretty trophy wife instead of a rich heiress.
When Tristan had asked to meet her in the Water Room, she did have expectations. Her initial feeling was excitement, then caution. What if he just wanted to study? She would be slightly devastated. Even so, Nellie put time and effort into her appearance, wearing a classy navy blue dress and black flats--in case it wasn't a date, she didn't want to wear heels and look like a fool. Her long hair was slightly wavy today and she was pleased that she didn't have to do much to keep it like that. With makeup on and most of her flaws covered, she took a walk to MARS.
The British witch was five minutes late, but had to stop outside the room to catch her breath. If she hadn't walked down the last hall briskly she would have been even later. After making sure she wasn't huffing like a horse, she pushed the door open and was pleasantly surprised to see that Tristan had prepared something very lovely: roses and gourmet food. Her smile brightened up her face and reached her hazel-green eyes as she approached him. Though a picnic in the Water Room wasn't ideal, the glaring lack of expensive restaurants and shopping centers forced students to be creative. Nellie would give Tristan an O if this was indeed a date.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Tristan," she said as she sat down next to him. "This all looks so lovely and it smells fantastic."
